Sean Connery is not a legend

Some will consider this bad taste - it’s the day he died I know. But this is a man who condoned hitting women. And though he qualified his endorsement by saying you shouldn’t hit a woman like you would a man, I think it’s enormously damaging that someone in his position - who so many people look up to - can make comments like this.

I’m sad for his family as I would be sad for any family who have lost a loved one. But I don’t think he should be remembered as a “legend”.

Anyway, here is a link to Sean Connery in his own words.....

There were so many stories from people of different ages and both sexes who fondly remembered Roger Moore- witty, kind and generous. He was cripplingly shy behind his suave persona, and often rescued or reached out to people whom he could see were similarly afflicted.

Whereas Sean Connery liked to slap women about. And now he's dead. Oh dear how sad never mind.

Again, you are not getting the (much) bigger point. Perhaps this thread is not for you?[/quote]
Couldn't agree more.

Gancanny · 31/10/2020 22:56

The Domestic Violence Act was passed in 1976, a whole eleven years before his comments in 1987, so he had over a decade to realise it was wrong and unacceptable.

Gancanny · 31/10/2020 22:57

It would be like me saying its perfectly acceptable to drive children around without a car seat and then use the defence of "well I'm a child of the 80s so my generation doesn't know any better".

Laws change, the onus is on citizens to keep up with them.

ReneeRol · 31/10/2020 22:57

No Kenzo, you're the one minimising violence by comparing an old man who was the product of his time and probably a bit of a shit like many men of his time, making bad comments 33 years ago, who may have evolved since then, who knows - with a man who raped hundreds of kids.

There's no equivalence. None. Not in any world that recognises the severity of what Saville and his friends did.

PimlicoJo · 31/10/2020 22:58

I'm not a Sean Connery fan at all, but I think this post, on the day of his death, is in poor taste. There are people who have lost a loved one today and are mourning him.

KenzoBaby · 31/10/2020 22:59

@ReneeRol as a pp said, you don't understand how debate works, do you dear?

aztecnik · 31/10/2020 22:59

Wasnt he also a tax dodger? Went to the Bahamas right?

KenzoBaby · 31/10/2020 23:00

@PimlicoJo how long should we wait, just out of interest? This week, another 2 women will die at the hands of their partner.

ReneeRol · 31/10/2020 23:00

Stop projecting Kenzo. You're the one who doesn't have any idea what you're talking about. Now go off there with your absurd comparisons.

KenzoBaby · 31/10/2020 23:04

@ReneeRol I have experienced both domestic and sexual violence so I think I'm well qualified to comment, thank you very much.

And just to be clear, SC did not just "make comments" he actually raised his hands to another human being, at least one woman, and made light of it.

TruckinRight · 31/10/2020 23:07

My grandad, born in 1920, was the gentlest man imaginable, and scathing of weaklings who hurt women. He had five daughters. Two of them got divorced when their husbands turned violent. Grandad took them and their kids (including me) in and gave them money to start life anew.

ReneeRol · 31/10/2020 23:11

That doesn't give you the right to minimise what happened to Savilles victims by comparing him to Connery. There's no comparison.

As for Connery, he was ninety. Like most people he did bad things and had bad attitudes over his lifetime. That doesn't mean it was the entire sum of his life. We don't know what good things he did or if he changed over the years and it's wrong to demonise him and claim that is all he was.

To compare him to a man who raped hundreds of children because you want to put everything "bad" in the same category minimises child sex trafficking and rape.

Readandwalk · 31/10/2020 23:14

Lots of decent people who lived when violence against women was acceptable didn't. Because they knew it was wrong. It's no excuse. Hes a public figure and so investigation if his violence should be public. Like John Lennon. Abusers. So what hes only dead.

He lived to be 90. Most abused women may not.

KenzoBaby · 31/10/2020 23:20

Everything lies on a spectrum, @ReneeRol, we can all agree that hence why courts give different sentences for difference crimes.

What I'm trying to get at is WHAT crime is bad enough that we should decline to hero-worship someone? Clearly what Saville did means he is no longer considered a legend. But SC is? OK, SO WHERE DO YOU DRAW THE LINE? That is my point!

Weesweetiewife · 31/10/2020 23:23

Kenzobaby hit the nail on the head there.

YoureRight · 31/10/2020 23:27

That man was open about enjoying performing violence on women, you lot who are humiliating yourselves to fawn over violent misogynist need to reassess everything about yourselves. There’s no justification for being pro-male violence.

I always thought he was very attractive. It seems I was wrong, personality wise.

KenzoBaby · 31/10/2020 23:29

Thank you, Wee.

FWIW, my personal opinion is that any obituary of a public type figure should be balanced. By all means, talk about their films/music/politics/sport but also discuss any controversies in their life.

I'm thinking here about eg Michael Jackson (assuming he was guilty, not everyone does), Oscar Pistorius, OJ Simpson...(the latter two also being domestic violence cases which actually ended up fatal).

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 31/10/2020 23:35

@KenzoBaby how fucking dare you send me personal , horrible messages. You are vile. 😡

KissWithAFist · 31/10/2020 23:37

@Strawberrypancakes

Wow. Hes barely cold.
Personally I care more about the currently living who are in abusive relationships. I think it’s extremely relevant to point out his stance on domestic abuse on the day he died. Because otherwise if it remains unchallenged it continues to be accepted. And as someone else has said, two women are killed a week by their abusive partners, and these partners need to know that every strike - slap, punch, kick or whatever is 100% wrong and they are abusive cunts. Any acceptance of the Sean Connery view of the world will only give these current - living - abusers vindication.

I agree with you on that. There is a line at which people cross that makes them so bad, they're just a bad person. Saville definitely crossed it, so did Weinstein and a load of others.

We don't if he did. He was a prick like many men of that time but I'm not going to judge him as irredeemable for making shitty comments and probably doing shitty things (which we don't know the extent of) more than thirty years ago.

I grew up in a culture where people believed very strange and batshit things in the 80s and 90s because they didn't know any better. They don't know because people change as they learn and the world opens up, there's a global awareness of things now, we live in the information age. A lot of older people would be horrified by the things they used to believe.

We have to be careful how we judge people.

The message was meant to be on the thread so everyone could read it, not just you. It was after you publicly told me to fuck off (a message now deleted by MN)

It said "You should be ashamed of yourself...I hope you don't have daughters".

Anyway, I sincerely apologise for sending it privately.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 31/10/2020 23:46

Anyway, I sincerely apologise for sending it privately

Yet still you are sending me messages when I replied to the first one with do not message me again . You're weird. I have never had any unsolicited private messages on here.

You are harassing me by private message and I have asked you to stop. So stop.
