Sean Connery is not a legend

Some will consider this bad taste - it’s the day he died I know. But this is a man who condoned hitting women. And though he qualified his endorsement by saying you shouldn’t hit a woman like you would a man, I think it’s enormously damaging that someone in his position - who so many people look up to - can make comments like this.

I’m sad for his family as I would be sad for any family who have lost a loved one. But I don’t think he should be remembered as a “legend”.

Anyway, here is a link to Sean Connery in his own words.....

Agree with you op.

Yogatomorrow · 31/10/2020 20:33

Those comments were made a long time ago. Was he ever asked about them? Did he ever regret them?

KenzoBaby · 31/10/2020 20:36

I think the onus is on HIM to come out and publicly repent if he was so minded. Not on us to check "So Sean, are you still a violent women-hater?" periodically.

Cantthinkofausename · 31/10/2020 20:38

Jesus fuck!! Have some bloody respect!

Cant believe what I'm reading!

Blinkinghell77 · 31/10/2020 20:39

And notwithstanding the fact he was a crap and annoying actor with an equally annoying voice.

mnahmnah · 31/10/2020 20:43

‘Sean Connery: In his own words’ is on BBC2 in 15 minutes. Wonder if these words of his will be included?

Itsyoouu · 31/10/2020 20:51

Yabvvu hes just died!

sweetkitty · 31/10/2020 20:53

I know someone who worked for him, staff were not allowed to talk or look at him. I don’t think he was a very nice person.

KenzoBaby · 31/10/2020 20:58

How long does a violent women-hater have to be dead before it's ok to point out they were a violent women-hater? 24hrs? A week? A month? A year? More?

What if we had all known Jimmy Savile was a paedophile when he died? Would we still have been expected to mourn him as a legend and just put his offending to the side for a while?

PlanDeRaccordement · 31/10/2020 21:04

In his generation it was acceptable to hit men, women and children on occasion. Doesn’t make him a hater. Physical violence was just much more accepted and prevalent then. Most movies had full on slaps in them.
Sometimes we forget just how good it is now. Things were much rougher in the 1960s/70s.

TigerBrite · 31/10/2020 21:04

He was born in 1930 and was a product of the misogynistic times in which he lived. Domestic violence was very common and accepted in that era. But times have changed and in 2006 he reportedly said he did not condone violence against women.

Mummyoflittledragon · 31/10/2020 21:05

Kenzo
With Seville it was apparently well known in the industry. But covered up. Gotta protect the paedo...

KenzoBaby · 31/10/2020 21:16

No, in 2006 he came out and said he didn't condone "abuse" of women. He didn't out and out say it's wrong to hit a woman (or indeed, to hit anyone!).

He was a coward to pull out of the interview.

My grandfather was his age, grew up in working-class Glasgow and was incredibly respectful of women.

ReneeRol · 31/10/2020 21:25

His views were reflective of his time. He grew up in a very different world with very different attitudes.

You can't judge people for not having 2020 attitudes in the 1980s when they were already old and out of touch!!

We don't know what his attitudes were before he died, an interview from 33 years ago only tells us what he thought 33 years ago. Which would have been very typical attitudes for men of his age and background at that time.

He was a great actor and he'll live on through his movies.

Coffeecak3 · 31/10/2020 21:41

My df and dfil both born in 1930 like Sean Connery. They didn’t think it acceptable to hit people.
A reflection of the time is a ridiculous argument. There’s still lots of domestic violence so why is that if we’re all so much more enlightened?

KissWithAFist · 31/10/2020 21:56

I really don’t buy the “reflective of his time”
Argument. Anyone who uses violence to assert their position, particularly against those weaker, is a bit of a cunt in my book. I really don’t care whether is was confined by society at that point or not.

Donald Trump was born only 16 years later. Absolutely despise the man but he is reviled here understandably enough for talking about ‘grabbing the pussy’ etc. Not heard him ever condone hitting women. Plenty of men born in those times didn’t talk in those terms.Being a famous actor doesn’t mean that you get a free pass no matter how many people here seem to suggest it does.
OwlOne · 31/10/2020 21:58

My thoughts OP. How quickly people forget and overlook.

TiddyTid · 31/10/2020 22:01

You sure he wasn't being "dry?"

Bluntness100 · 31/10/2020 22:04

Op there was already a thread on this, you even read it and decided to start another, why?

CaptainMyCaptain · 31/10/2020 22:06

I didn't know about that but he was described on radio4 this morning as a 'tax exile'. Not the stuff legend's are made of.

FagashJackie · 31/10/2020 22:08

My grandad was born in 1915. He would have hated to have been associated with views like that. He was a gentle and kind man.

Motnight · 31/10/2020 22:08

The posters talking about respecting Sean Connery as he has just died - not sure that he gave the same respect to women.

He can be a good actor who helped make fab films and still be an unpleasant man in his private life.

And please don't say that he was a product of his generation, that's not true.

KissWithAFist · 31/10/2020 22:09

The number of women defending him is so depressing. They just don’t realise how much they have been conditioned to accept that it “just the way to was/is” If every man had taken that attitude then nothing would have changed even now.

People should know that Sean Connery believed it was ok to hit women and they should also know that is completely wrong and completely unacceptable.
