Just trying to live a meaningful life in an increasingly bizarre world in which nothing makes sense any more.

Re vaccines, I would be pleasantly surprised if they came to pass sooner rather than later, but I seriously have my doubts. Even if a satisfactory one is created, by the sounds of it, the sheer logistics of getting everyone a couple of doses will take years for this appallingly disorganised government to organise (lack of glass vials being one of them - new factories will have to be built). Then there is the fact that shark oil is needed in the maunfacture. This will neccessitate slaughtering millions of sharks and threatening the species as a whole with extinction.
Meanwhile, the BBC news site headline is'1000000 dead' (global figure). in the last six months, globally, approximately 4.5 million have died of starvation, 4.5 million of cancer and 8.5 million of heart disease.
Matt 'Oliver Cromwell' Handjob has just introduced, without parliamentry consultation, a new raft of restrictions and swingeing penalties. Yes, obviously the virus is all our fault and we need punishing regularly and keeping in check. That'll larn us.

Worldgonecrazy · 29/09/2020 08:40

I hope they rush through the vaccine as it will I’ve the government an excuse to reverse course without damaging egos

Ibake · 29/09/2020 08:44

Indeed @Reedwarbler With today's headline re the 1 million milestone (from a population of nearly 8 billion) I am mindful of the need to direct people to worldometers.info and scroll down to the health section for YTD figures. So far over 5.6 million children under 5, but as long as they're poor, brown and on another continent who cares? We need a sense of perspective and proportion.

SpnBaby1967 · 29/09/2020 08:54

Ugh, what a start to the day already. I have one of those periods who cant decide if it's starting or not. One minute theres blood and that gooey brown stringy stuff, the next dry as a bone. Wish it would make its mind up!

Anyway, doing online training for system testing today. Rubbish, this is where I miss in person training as it'll be impossible to ask questions as we all have to sit on mute. I'm rubbish with technology at the best of times, this will make it worse (also the idiocy of getting me to do the testing hasn't escaped me with my technological ineptness)

Curlygirl06 · 29/09/2020 08:54
@Willow2017 Hancock is supremely dishonest. He specifically said that the first generation of Covid vaccines would not be licensed for children. At the time, I thought this was an exercise in caution after the last example of a rushed pandemic vaccine in 2009 caused dozens of cases of narcolepsy in child recipients. He is looking more and more sinister, I'm afraid.
My friend's son was vaccine damaged by the swine flu vaccine. She's said she's not having this one under any circumstances.
Not a new contributor, btw, formerly known as supermarketworker.

Ibake · 29/09/2020 08:55

I think one problem is that most people (myself included) struggle to compute the difference between 1 million and 1 billion. I saw this earlier this year and it was done re wealth but I do think it's a handy visualisation of numbers. Keep scrolling (warning: it's long!) as the stats are fascinating

Ibake · 29/09/2020 08:56

Also useful if you have managed to keep scrolling to 'see' what £2 trillion looks like ie the current size of our national debt.

Blobby10 · 29/09/2020 09:16

Been trying since 8am to get through to my doctors surgery - I have orbital cellulitis and I've had it enough times (6) to know that as soon as it starts swelling and tingling (woke at 4am with it swollen) that I need industrial strength antibiotics asap. Finally got onto the "you are caller number 16 in the queue" after several aborted attempts "sorry we are very busy and can't take your call" only to be told there are no appointments left today. If it gets worse I have to call 111. Who will tell me to go to the GP who I can't see because they aren't doing face to face even though their telephone message says they are!!!! Aaarrrgghhhhhhh!

ISaySteadyOn · 29/09/2020 09:17

That was really interesting. Thanks!

I have been teaching DD1 how to reduce fractions. Perhaps today's big one will be 1 million out of 7.5 billion.

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 29/09/2020 09:18

So today its a whole week since dd had her covid test and was promised results "tonight or tomorrow morning". No one answering the phone to chase results. Bet the fucking thing will come through on exactly 14 days... World. Beating. Apparently.

Orangeblossom7777 · 29/09/2020 09:18

My main concerns are that firstly many of these measures seem to come from a place of fear and 'needing to do something' and are not even proven to help (but portrayed as if they will definitely help by e.g. Hancock) for example the 10pm thing.

Secondly I am concerned that no risk / benefit analysis has taken place so the cure may well be worse than the disease. In my personal life I am observing the impact on older relatives who are having their own health problems dismissed as not covid, seemingly they don't matter anymore. Now it is likely that, exacerbated by the lockdown, one may die early as a consequence partly of these measures.

chocolatesweets · 29/09/2020 09:22

Anyone else feel the tide is changing?

Ibake · 29/09/2020 09:29

@Curlygirl06 now I'm worried, did you finally tell a twatty customer to GTF and are no longer a supermarket worker?!

BillywilliamV · 29/09/2020 09:36

They don’t need to vaccinate everyone immediately, just the vulnerable. If my family isn’t a long way down a vaccine list then something is very wrong.
Never had any issues with any of us catching it!

How Have I only just found this thread.
I'm so over this now. I know no one who has died or even tested positive for Covid. My area was on local restriction for a few weeks recently and is now back on. Its so shitty.
DS wants to e til to do his Masters after a year at home deciding what to do. He is suffering with depression atm so is kind of aimless. I try to jolly him along and offer helpful ideas of things for him to do but it's hard.

DH runs his own business. Doesn't qualify for any govt assistance but luckily the work is picking up.

Its time to get back to some kind of normality in my view. But I'm not a scientist or an economist so?

Oh yes and face masks can get fucked. I wear it when required but it hides the fact that I'm grumbling and muttering obscenities about having to wear it. Ugh.

BogRollBOGOF · 29/09/2020 10:31

It's getting harder and harder to keep my obscenities inside my head or on MN.
Especially now the DCs are in their full on mid-term flow and I still haven't unclenched from the preceeding 5 months Grin

It's tough because so many are now in the position of having to look long term on decision making with absolutely no goal posts in sight.

I'm surprised that we're not hearing about y6s struggling on making informed choices about secondary applications.

Pleasedontdothat · 29/09/2020 10:38

Completely off topic but this has really cheered me up this morning

Morning. God the uni situation there sounds absolutely nuts. Here it was advised to do the next two weeks online. Most places doing that anyway.

I'm just started a part time uni course. All lectures online and no exams, they are changing everything to assignments. I shall be very busy. Five modules this term.

Totally hear you on how hard it is to keep the curses and mutterings inside. Any dementor friend I have I just try and pretend I didn't hear them.

A teacher friend said they will keep the schools open until all the teachers are dead. A fit and healthy early 40s person with no underlying conditions. I ignored it completely.,

Taswama · 29/09/2020 10:48

Welcome @Wheytaminute ! We are cunningly disguised and it took me a while to find but it is a little corner of sanity.

Thanks for that @Pleasedontdothat - made me chuckle too.

Welcome, @Wheytaminute. We're a nice bunch of grumpy fuckers. Pull up a chair Smile
Ibake · 29/09/2020 10:55

But fair warning @Wheytaminute, we're getting increasingly grumpier aren't we @SirSamuelVimes?

SirSamuelVimes · 29/09/2020 11:03

Yeah that's probably true!

BogRollBOGOF · 29/09/2020 11:08

I didn't used to be grumpy. I used to be jolly!

DominaShantotto · 29/09/2020 11:31

I've just been chatting to my uni tutor (who is lovely and well in the loop with my shitty mental health) - no pressure for me to go onto campus - I don't fear the virus, but the changes and one-way systems are being a huge anxiety trigger. Very much get the impression they're being very prepared to pull their limited face to face teaching altogether.
