Black section on MN

I think it would be great if Mumsnet could make a black parents section/ section for black users.

Thanks @BIWI Blush I usually lurk and only post on the Xmas topic but this is a whole level of twaddle I can’t even comprehend!

PatricksRum · 11/09/2020 21:51

@Plantpotpot

Isn’t this going backwards Hmm and isn’t ‘black people’ a bit generic?
Jesús.

We are black. Apologies if stating our skin colour hurts your flaky wings. Hmm

NRTFT so apologies if this has been covered but would this section exclude other (visible) minority groups that aren't black? Genuine question.

If any other posters who are BAME would like to propose a Majority Ethnic board I'm happy to add my vote but it's neither appropriate for me to "fight" this in any way nor to suggest something additional which is primarily for people other than me, I feel.

BAME here 🙋🏽‍♀️. Nah.

Good luck with the new board guys.

How?
It'd just be an online space people who are black could have who could talk about issues/topics that affect them, and places to discuss their culture, their recipes etc
Kind of like Scotsnet? It's no different.
They're not being banned from posting elsewhere on here for goodness sake.
Sounds like a jump forward to me, not back!

I thought black was a bit generic because there is no such thing as 'white parenting' for instance, white people parent all different ways so it's really different to learn that 'black parenting' is a thing, the thought that so many people would parent the same as each other whether they are from Ghana, Ireland or Canada is really different I suppose. The same with 'white hair' or 'white fashion' or 'white food' it isn't a thing, so maybe we find it hard to imagine that black hair, fashion and food is a thing but there is no need to doubt the posters here. If they say it is a thing I'm sure it is and if they want somewhere to discuss that then I dont see why it should be any skin off anyones noses.
Plantpotpot · 11/09/2020 22:13

Discuss there culture? Surely ‘black’ is extremely varied! I suppose I worry the next step is ‘I think that’s a ‘black’ concern maybe you should go on the black board? Just seems strange to me but I know I’ll get shouted again

captainjacksparrow · 11/09/2020 22:14

Maybe there should be “white parenting”. And maybe it should include being anti racist and a healthy dose of critical thinking skills if this thread is anything to go by...

Plantpotpot · 11/09/2020 22:14

OuiouiKitty - fair point

midgebabe · 11/09/2020 22:14

Yet despite all the differences, the white group manage quite well as a group when it comes to discussions of everything from hair to parenting because truthfully white is the unspoken default

If one subset of the mumsnet community feel that they have sufficient common ground with each other that is not well served elsewhere, then asking for a board makes perfect sense

WorraLiberty · 11/09/2020 22:14

@BIWI

If only there was a 'like' button *@captainjacksparrow* ...
Now now. Certain Mumsnetters could just about cope with a topic for black members but requests for a 'like' button have caused all out war and flouncing in the past Wink
SummerSummerSummertime · 11/09/2020 22:18

We have a feminism section without a men's rights section. Why? Because women are at the bottom of the chain in society.

Erm... It's MUMSnet. It's essentially for women. Yes men are on here. As are non parents. But it's a site at heart that's made by women for women!

PicsInRed · 11/09/2020 22:18

@silentpool

OP, may I suggest Lipstick Alley as an alternative to Mumsnet? I personally would prefer not to see segregation on these boards. As a foreign non-parent, I already face questions of why I am here but I like to think there is enough in the way of common human experience to get on with here.
Why don't you head off to Lipstick Alley if you don't like all the very, very, many special purpose boards enjoyed here? Ta.

Going by your thought process why does Dadsnet exist? And why was the feminism board not there to begin with?

Yes and a black board by black posters for black posters....Do you see where I’m going with this?

It’s remarkable how 2 add 2 equals 4 when you apply yourself isn’t it?

bunnyrabbit93 · 11/09/2020 22:29

As a BAME person I dont get it personally. Why exclude people so if a bame person wants hair advise surley you would put it in chat?

You don't need to get it.

You aren't the target market.

Why cause more segregation? Aren't we all people, humans, the same?!

PatricksRum · 11/09/2020 22:33

@sunnydaytomorrow

No we aren't the same apparently. Hence why we are killed and white people aren't. Hence why we are disadvantaged and white people are advantaged.

captainjacksparrow · 11/09/2020 22:34

Ok bunny if I want on advice on the fact that I’ve not slept for the last 4 months due to my newborn, should I post that in the post natal club topic where I will get helpful, empathetic responses or in chat or heaven forbid the infertility topic where the responses will be totally different, not always relevant and may make me feel quite shit about myself and/or my inability to get my baby to sleep/parenting?

What is different about what the op is seeking from the example above?

WorraLiberty · 11/09/2020 22:35

Please tell me you've spent your entire life being raised on another planet and you've only just stepped foot on earth today?

Otherwise I'll have to assume you're on a wind up...

AMemeByAnyOtherName · 11/09/2020 22:37

"What? White people are killed too!"

"The biggest killer of black people is other black people, why don't you acknowledge that!!"

"The UK has come a long way and is nothing like America in terms of statistics"

"Black people kill white people too, it's just not reported as much"

Don't mind me. Just practicing my psychic reading skills on Patrick's post.

sunnydaytomorrow · 11/09/2020 22:38

Rude.

I see everyone as the same. It's people like you that keep trying to make everyone different.

My opinion, I don't need rude pushy responses.

AMemeByAnyOtherName · 11/09/2020 22:40

@PatricksRum next time you start a thread like this, please can you at least have the decency to attach an accompanying bingo card? I could have won loads by now.
