I think it would be great if Mumsnet could make a black parents section/ section for black users.

For those wanting books

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 10/09/2020 17:01

Is that directed at me?

tinierclanger · 10/09/2020 17:03

@Ihopeyourcakeisshit it’s really not much effort to google and get a list

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.gaytimes.co.uk/life/10-books-about-racism-and-black-lives-white-people-should-be-reading-right-now/amp/

I have done the job for you.

If I wanted to learn about Christianity for example I would want to be pointed in the right direction. It isn't really good enough to say there are 100s of books or just Google it as some of the literature wouldn't be balanced. Some of it would be extreme.

Did MNHQ respond to give an answer?

PersephonePromotesEquanimity · 10/09/2020 17:07

Deep breath ...

I'm in a (not just MN related) bad mood already so I'll try not to let it get the better of me.

I'm wondering where you live, Ihopeyourcakeisshit. Are you actually saying you have never met a black person - at school, university, work, acquaintances, gym, hobbies, GP surgery, midwives, estate agencies, restaurants, galleries ...? Or do you just mean you haven't invited any black people to dinner parties or your wedding?

Because I'm wondering what it must be like inside your head and what you must imagine many of the posters on this thread to be ... like.

PatricksRum why have you begun another thread Dear Black People of Mumsnet?

How about including mixed-race Mums too or aren't they black enough for you. They're the ones I feel most sorry for, not being fully accepted by either whites or blacks.

PicsInRed · 10/09/2020 17:09
@PatricksRum “White people segregated us a long time ago. We're just following through with the hand we've been dealt”

That’s a really shitty attitude to have. If you are going to continue to keep the segregation, then don’t be surprised / moan when white people continue to do the same!
Are you suggesting a white version of MGTOW, or are you quite literally threatening a return to formal segregation and all 🤔 that entailed? In response to a simple, harmless request for a chat topic?

GingerBeverage · 10/09/2020 17:10

New board, no problem, surely? It's not as if they're running out of server space.
I read this thread recently and it opened my eyes once again to the subtle ways colour impacts life experience.

@itsgettingweird that would make perfect sense if they hadn’t spent the last few months banging on about how white people ‘don’t get it and need to be educated’.

It’s actually shocking MN are allowing this tbh.

Kitmerow · 10/09/2020 17:13

@PicsInRed I’m not suggesting / threatening anything. Just pointing out that age old expression of ‘treat people how you like to be treated’.

midgebabe · 10/09/2020 17:14

It's not about segregation

It's about space

Segregation would imposed on the discriminated class, for example being Expected to create a new version of mumsnet just for black people rather than having a share of mumsnet

Space is just like lbtq, SN , other minority groups who can benefit from the space

Kitmerow · 10/09/2020 17:16

@midgebabe never known any of those topics to specifically exclude a certain race / sexuality etc.

PicsInRed · 10/09/2020 17:16

I see. And what would the proposed reciprocal "treatment" be? That you don't read/post in the topic? Or something else?

midgebabe · 10/09/2020 17:18

Well then white people ( NAWP) get educated,

First. Give black people a space to speak.

Then you can lurk on that board if you like more education

I don't need to "include" anyone. I have mixed heritage also. I'm still black.

I'm not saying I have never met a black person.
I was never at school with a black person, haven't been in jobs or had friends who are black. Not out of choice, just circumstance. At 7 years old I went to Sheffield with my dad and saw W**S OUT spray painted on a subway. I asked my dad what the W word meant and he told me that it was a name stupid people sometimes called black people. It never occurred to me then that black people were any different and I spent my entire life considering myself 'colour blind' Obviously this is white privilege. I don't want to be ignorant and I am most certainly not racist but being told to Google it, is not imo helpful.

Kitmerow · 10/09/2020 17:20

@midgebabe lol no thanks, I’ll pass.

Continue to keep the segregation? Hahahaha
We don't have equal opportunities. YOU segregated us and YOU continue to do so.

Don't play the poor white person act.

Nonsense

The boards are focussed on a specific subset of people and offer support
That's all that is being asked for

Not exclusion
Just a place where the default assumption is black, black hair, black experience, black cultural heritiage
Where a thread that will drop quickly off active due to small numbers of people who can usefully contribute , can stay alive. Menopause threads stay on the first page for months. The menopause board is not excluding men or young women or any body. It's just a useful resource for a subset of people

Although at this rate, it may end up being heavily moderate like feminism or sex

Ihopeyourcakeisshit why not start a thread asking for recommendations, then people can choose whether to answer or not. Its unfair to expect education from others, but it's ok to ask and leave people to decide whether to answer or not.

Did anyone manage to read what happened?
