Black section on MN

I think it would be great if Mumsnet could make a black parents section/ section for black users.

@PatricksRum this is a fantastic idea and sadly this thread is proving your point for you beautifully Hmm it’s embarrassing, frankly.

Love,
A white lady who will never have your experiences but has your back Flowers

FiddlefigOnTheRoof · 09/09/2020 18:10

@Soundofdapolice

And how do you propose to police this?
Eh?! The same way they police any other space on Mumsnet.
altforvarmt · 09/09/2020 18:15

I'm not black, but I very much support this request. I really hope it's put in place, and soon.

Some posts on this thread have illustrated beautifully why it is a much-needed addition.

@OhTheRoses

I agree with *@slipperywhensparticus*. It has a smack of segregation about it. Would a working class section be palatable, or a section just for Conservatives to deal with the left wing vibe?
If there is sufficient interest in working class parents or Tories or any other subsection of parents having their own section they are always free to ask MNHQ.

In the meantime, a group of black mothers is suggesting this. It's got nothing to do with any other group - no one is suggesting carving up the whole site into minority groups.

midgebabe · 09/09/2020 18:19

An ideal world allows everyone to be treated equally with respect for differences , it doesn't try to hide from the differences/pretend there is no problem under accusations of segregation.

Having a new board isn't trying to restrict the options of some groups ( bad segregation ) , it's giving space to a group who finds it hard to have their voice heard ( positive )

PatricksRum · 09/09/2020 18:39

I took a break from the thread.

Came back and Ffs

WHITE PEOPLE, WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM

The world is centered around white people. I ask for ONE SECTION on ONE SITE and you're still fucking moaning.

Let me think...

The same way the rest of the site is "policed"

I think its a great idea

PatricksRum · 09/09/2020 18:43

It might be a little churlish, but I remember the OP stubbornly refusing to stop using "white people" as a sweeping generalisation earlier in the thread when asked because someone found it offensive, so perhaps sweeping generalisations based on race are here to stay.

Why would I stop calling people white? Confused

OP posts:
Terralee · 09/09/2020 18:43

I think @PatricksRum's idea of a separate Board is a good one.

I'm shocked & saddened by the amount of racism that there is now on MN.
Also noticing that there are certain PBPs on this thread commenting who are, I believe, particularly racist & unpleasant.

No different to Craicnet etc (which I stalk). Crack on

C8H10N4O2 · 09/09/2020 18:47

@PatricksRum

As HQ seem to be looking favourably is it worth starting a thread in Site Stuff to ask for positive suggestions for the new topic?

Many interested posters will likely have abandoned the shit show derailing that this thread has been subjected to (including me for most of the day tbh).

PatricksRum · 09/09/2020 18:48

@Soundofdapolice

Haha

So... is this a space exclusively for black people to post and to eliminate white posters?

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Please tell me this is sarcasm

FFS, it isn't about eliminating anyone (though there are a few on this thread that nobody would miss!). It's about people having a place to to talk about specific issues that are relevant to them without having to explain stuff to people who simply don't get it because it's outside their realm of experience. It really isn't difficult to understand why people might want or need this.

Soundofdapolice · 09/09/2020 18:52

@PatricksRum what colour am I?

Some responses here are absolutely batshit. Beyond offensive and I genuinely am not sure if they're trolling or (more depressingly) if they reveal a much larger number of people that I thought are outright racists.
To answer how MN would "police" such a board...we already have places such as Craicnet, as many have mentioned, and Pregnancy Choices for those considering terminations (which I seem to remember MN had reservations about opening)...they are well moderated and, shockingly, the discussion is mostly respectful and helpful. Why are some expecting this board to be any different?!

itsgettingweird · 09/09/2020 18:55

@ElizabethMainwaring

I've just been looking at the various boards available. Tucked away in Becoming a Parent section I found the Multicultural Families subsection. Never noticed that before, and I'm very au fait with this site. You don't see that popping up in active threads do you.
It's the same as the SN section.

As a parent to a disabled child I like the fact it's not active.

Keeps the twats out who want to whatabout about disability and is there for those of us who need it.

And I agree it is important. It's not about segregation but minority and if your experience is unique and you need to connect with people who get it.

Doesn't mean you can't also have a great time in chat and Aibu because as pointed out above - user name gives no hint of race, ethnicity or disability or gender or whatever.

Scautish · 09/09/2020 18:55

This comment and the even worse one telling the OP to “ask nicely” epitomise exactly the fucking reason the OP wants and NEEDS the Black/BAME thread.

I’m so sorry OP that you have been exposed to so many in-denial racists who have zero idea of white privilege. Perhaps the new topic will allow them to understand a little more. I know I need to understand more too.

@Mehmen

I’m sorry but why? If a white person asked the same they’d be uproar. Why can’t you ask about beauty hair blah blah on the existing boards? If it’s cultural then to be fair to all we would need Asian, Eastern European and so on.
🙈

This has to be the most fucking depressing sentence I've ever had the non pleasure of reading on MN.

And actually highlights exactly why Patrick is campaigning and quite rightly for.
