Black section on MN

I think it would be great if Mumsnet could make a black parents section/ section for black users.

OP posts:
ghostyslovesheets · 09/09/2020 15:52

well done OP - brilliant plan and glad MNHQ have taken it one board

this thread is a fabulous illustration of why it's needed - sorry you've had to wade through so many pages of the same old shite whataboutism and 'melting pot' ideology

BraveGoldie · 09/09/2020 15:55
@BraveGoldie
It might have more impact in a post trying to prove that white people are massacring black people that the first victim you list, Trayvon Martin, actually have been killed by a white person? Trayvon Martin was killed by George Zimmerman, a Hispanic POC.
Nobody used the word massacring.

And he wasn't the first person I called attention to.... the first person was the man in the video, Daniel Shaver...... so you clearly avoided that or decided to pass over it in order to try to search for something you could pick holes in.

Perhaps you could self reflect on your desire to do that, when I am trying to refute the blatantly prejudiced assertion that black people don't get killed by white people when they are doing nothing wrong... why do you want to put your energy into undermining that?

So, it will be a black persons thread - How will you know posters are black? Seems a recipe for problems. Why can't posters just say 'I'm black - have others found x, y or z..... on the main boards
Why the fuck should they have to do that?

Black people have asked for this and have explained several times on this thread why they want it and why they feel it's necessary.

Yet you decide it's not?!

When people are speaking, listen

PersephonePromotesEquanimity · 09/09/2020 16:04

I'm not sure that is the intent.

In truth I am personally rather sick of being accosted with the word "black" a million times a day; it's too often used to suggest some monolithic existence, with little or no acknowledgment of the differences between people of, let's say, African, Caribbean, or South American heritage. And absolutely no comprehension of the actual lives of black English barristers, Jamaican architects, Nigerian physicists studying in Russia ...

But as I understand it, the new board would be a forum where issues and interests of concern to all those people might be discussed - with an acknowledgement that black people will be the default voice of experience. A place where it won't be acceptable to be shouted down by white posters who happen to pass through ...

BIWI · 09/09/2020 16:05

@PatricksRum I think this is a great idea. And I hope very much that @MNHQ agree!

AuntyPasta · 09/09/2020 16:11

I’ve been on a thread recently where someone posted that they were having trouble with a particular neighbour being racist and staring at them whenever they were in their own garden. It was putting them off using their outdoor space. There were responses asking why they assumed it was racist behaviour, asking for for evidence of it being racism, suggesting it was just curiosity ... I’m guessing that they might have actually had support without having to wade through the bullshit if there were a separate section.

If you post in feminism about specific sexism you’ve experienced you don’t have to spend 5 pages justifying why the behaviour was actually sexist.

I support a black parents/black users section but I’m white so the details are nothing to do with me and should be between MNHQ and black users.

MargotsBumpyNight · 09/09/2020 16:12

Going by many of the posts here, it's not only an excellent idea but a necessary one. Just waiting for someone to call you uppity and attention seeking, just like that Markle woman GrinAs a white person I will drop by to specifically SHUT UP and lurk.

rambleon1 · 09/09/2020 16:14

Exactly this.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 09/09/2020 16:15

@MargotsBumpyNight I think the tone policing of the OP began on about page 3!

No, It sounds like it will feature comments and topics suggested by black people or relevant to black people and of course be open to anyone who feels they have a valid comment to make.

Sounds a good idea to me.

SoupDragon · 09/09/2020 16:20

Why can't people post "I keep fish - have others found X, Y or Z?"
Or "I'm gay - have others found X, Y or Z?"
Or "I have a dog - have others found X, Y or Z?""... on the main boards?

What is your exact problem with a space for Black issues?

drspouse · 09/09/2020 16:24

Have you actually read this thread?
Because when you then say "have you been on holiday to ABC" or "we are thinking of moving to D" everyone else says "oh, I went there and nobody was racist". Despite a) not actually knowing what racism means and b) not being Black.

tigertreats · 09/09/2020 16:25

What harm could letting people that would like a space have a space do ?
If I asked for a space to discuss another topic would people be so annoyed ?
Also - if other ethnic groups at some point did want a space to discuss issues that impact them as a group what would be the harm to anyone in that ?

Giningit · 09/09/2020 16:27

@Snoringferret

I don't like the idea of a black section as it implies the rest of the site isn't for black people.

Like having 'women's hour' on the radio which is obviously tongue in cheek now.

I worry that it would make black people feel that they had to post there rather than elsewhere.

Not me. I have the freedom to post wherever I feel is relevant. The Black board would I assume be for topics specific to black people.
lasangoles · 09/09/2020 16:28

I would bloody love this as a black woman with afro hair! An afro hair care section would be amazing.

Coolhand2 · 09/09/2020 16:42

I think it's a great idea👌

MichaelMumsnet · 09/09/2020 16:56

Thanks for the many constructive comments in this thread. It looks like the proposed section would be valuable to many. Please do continue to post your ideas and we'll take them all on board.

Dandelionz · 09/09/2020 16:56

you just don't get it, do you dandelionz. Or maybe you just don't want to accept it because it has already been explained to you several times.

??
I only saw one reply to my first comment, so no actually it wasn't

This!!! I’m so so sick of people who aren’t black, assuming that’s there is a singular “Black” experience. Apparently we’re all on benefits, in prison, working class, under-educated etc. When they talk about black people it’s always in the negative. It’s the infantilisation of people who happen to have dark skin that really irks me. I grew up in a middle class family, have a middle class life now, which includes having mainly middle class friends, many who happen to also be black. I am not denying that structural inequalities exist due to race, within all social classes, however it would be useful if people acknowledged that some black people don’t recognise the victim caricature. We are trying to make a positive change ourselves. Hopefully this new board would give like minded black people the opportunity to discuss issues with others who understand them
CorianderLord · 09/09/2020 17:02

I think it's a great idea - I'd find it interesting to read a section where black voices are the majority. Even though I'm white.

To be honest, I suspect there are many of the white posters on here who are also tired of this monolithic group representation, who would prefer to deal with individuals as they are, without really caring about skin colour. Because what are presented as "black" issues are often issues of poverty, or broken homes, or under-education that are applicable to people of all races who live in such conditions in large numbers. And that's before we even get on to the really controversial statements like "George Floyd / Trayvon Martin / Michael Brown etc... were killed because they were black", when the reality of each individual case, and the stats around police killings, are far from clear on the issue.

It might be a little churlish, but I remember the OP stubbornly refusing to stop using "white people" as a sweeping generalisation earlier in the thread when asked because someone found it offensive, so perhaps sweeping generalisations based on race are here to stay.
