Black section on MN

I think it would be great if Mumsnet could make a black parents section/ section for black users.

OP posts:

I had always assumed there was a topic for BAME posters, it's a bit embarrassing that there isn't.

There's multicultural families under being a parent - not very busy though.

C130 · 09/09/2020 14:19

heartsonacake look up what the word racist actually means.

Dandelionz · 09/09/2020 14:22

This is bollocks

How so? It is not always the case that out of a group of people, the black person will have the least privilege, since there are many different ways to have privilege, e.g. Socioeconomic, disabilities, sexual orientations/adherence to gender norms, patriarchy.

Great idea! Then we can have a White section, an Asian section and then one for every other ethnicity... nobody not of that ethnicity can post in any other section or have any type of conversation or debate. We can then extend it to the rest of society in our day to day interactions Hmm

Yeah you’re like 18 pages late on the whole pro-racism thing.
OverTheRainbow88 · 09/09/2020 14:36

@SimonJT

I wouldn’t waste your time now on these thoughtless people.

I think it’s a great idea and can’t wait to be a part of it!

Gilead · 09/09/2020 14:36

@Sunshineandsparkle, your racism is shining through with the added help of your user name. 😡

Are you usually this stupid and ignorant or have you made a special effort?
PhilSwagielka · 09/09/2020 14:43

To the person who suggested having a working-class board because something something suicide: black and Asian WC people exist too. Or do you think they're all rich? Why is working-class always equated with 'white'?

I'm Jewish, maybe I should suggest a Jewish board. Oh wait, I won't because I'm not going to be a cunt and derail a thread about black posters' concerns. And I don't blame them for wanting their own board because Mumsnet does not give a shit about racism. Shock, horror, racism is not just shit through letterboxes and calling people the n-word.

There's already subsections like Gransnet, Dadsnet, LGBT parents, Children with Special Needs, Craicnet...why not a board for black users?
PlanDeRaccordement · 09/09/2020 14:56

@BraveGoldie
It might have more impact in a post trying to prove that white people are massacring black people that the first victim you list, Trayvon Martin, actually have been killed by a white person? Trayvon Martin was killed by George Zimmerman, a Hispanic POC.

Brilliant idea @PatricksRum, I'm really glad MNHQ are going for it.SmileFlowers

You just don't get it, do you dandelionz. Or maybe you just don't want to accept it because it has already been explained to you several times.

Lollyneenah · 09/09/2020 15:12

I like the idea too. I'm hesitating so much typing this because I'm white and I dont want to offend, but I do get the need for a space to talk about your issues and topics relating to your heritage without white people barging in asking dumb ass questions.

I'm roma gypsy, so one of the most hated cultures on mumsnet I think. Mumsnet absofuckinglutely need to clamp down hard on the racism on this site.

Snoringferret · 09/09/2020 15:13

I don't like the idea of a black section as it implies the rest of the site isn't for black people.

Like having 'women's hour' on the radio which is obviously tongue in cheek now.

I worry that it would make black people feel that they had to post there rather than elsewhere.

Sunshineandsparkle · 09/09/2020 15:15

@chickenortheegg Those boards are inclusive of everyone, irrespective of their race or gender. Separating people based on the colour of their skin seems backwards to me. The Blm movement is finally highlighting issues facing the Bame community that people have buried their heads in the sand for for years. I completely agree with targeted drives to increase Bame representation in different fields i.e the law firm earmarking a certain number of training contracts to black students and marketing them accordingly. This is to increase representation and offer opportunities that have been denied due to years of engrained prejudice. I just don’t see how creating boards or things just for a certain ethnic group is beneficial.

Snoringferret · 09/09/2020 15:17

Oh wait I've read a bit more now and you mean more like the feminism section, instead of having a 'black style and beauty', 'black parenting' etc which was suggested.

Yeah I think that's a good idea.

AlexaShutUp · 09/09/2020 15:23

I just don’t see how creating boards or things just for a certain ethnic group is beneficial.

If some people from a historically disadvantaged group find it helpful to have a space to discuss certain issues with others from that group, then surely that is beneficial?

If others from the same disadvantaged group do not feel that they need such a forum, then clearly, they don't need to access it. As for anyone outside that disadvantaged group, it's frankly not for them to decide whether it would be beneficial or not.

AMemeByAnyOtherName · 09/09/2020 15:33

"I just don’t see how creating boards or things just for a certain ethnic group is beneficial."

Creating a website primarily for mothers to talk about issues relevant to them seems to have been successful so far. Let's not knock it 'til we've tried it.

Sunshineandsparkle · 09/09/2020 15:36

@Sexnotgender For me stupidity and ignorance is when you can’t have a conversation without slinging insults Wink

Initially it was set up just for mums. Now, however, there are dads, grandparents and people without children who I see posting regularly. People aren’t excluded on here because they’re not a mum.
MistressMounthaven · 09/09/2020 15:45

So, it will be a black persons thread - How will you know posters are black? Seems a recipe for problems.
Why can't posters just say 'I'm black - have others found x, y or z..... on the main boards

AMemeByAnyOtherName · 09/09/2020 15:50

@Sunshineandsparkle so why are you assuming other races will be excluded from the black discussion boards?
