Black section on MN

I think it would be great if Mumsnet could make a black parents section/ section for black users.

OP posts:

Staggering thread. Truly staggering. I know MN and AIBU aren't exactly a fair cross section of the British population but the ignorance and out and out racism displayed here is the perfect illustration of why such a space on MN needs to exist.
Good work, OP.

PapaPoule · 09/09/2020 13:31

@Pertella

The tip of the spear is an idiom that exists in English, particularly used in military English.

Yes, it does. But it doesnt mean what you seem to think it means in the context of the rest of your statement.

Any chance you could explain what you think I meant ? Or what you think it means ? Or why it is "interesting" ?

I understand that you're an enigmatic intellectual whose Sphynxian musings are wasted on mere mortals, but more than one line per post would be helpful in having a discussion.

It’s insane isn’t it. This is the second time this week I’ve seen shit like this.

This thread absolutely highlights why BLM is needed and how ridiculously precious some white people can be.

@DullDullWeather

Yea Where is a working class board?

Black people feel so hard done by
Do you know the most ignored part of society are young WHITE BOYS AND MEN??
Highest suicide rates too but hey, we don't matter.

@DullDullWeather How would having a board suggested by OP have any impact on what you are stating here? You have voice - you can campaign to change that.

This is an odd thread. I assumed OP had the idea and wondered if if anyone else thought it was great/good/should happen. Surely people are saying “not something I’d want” rather than “absolutely not don’t do it”? it’s an opinion nothing else.

PestymcPestFace · 09/09/2020 13:42

Brilliant Patrick aka the articulate and efficient black woman Grin

Now constructive ideas on how to format. Might as well give MNHQ a flying start.
Be demanding, a whole board with a sensible selection of subsections, like the Feminism board.

AMemeByAnyOtherName · 09/09/2020 13:45

@Itisbetter sadly no. The 'against' responses have been focused on either • how unfair it would be to other sections of society, • how badly it will affect the way MN correctly works or • how intrinsically racist they perceive the suggestion to be.

Not many (if any) black people have said they wouldn't want it. And the white people dissenting, I'm not sure why they believe it affects them to be honest.

JanewaysBun · 09/09/2020 13:46

Great idea! Really would love one.

HopeMumsnet · 09/09/2020 13:52

Hi all,
We've banned DullDullWeather as they are a PBP and already banned from the site for goading on other subjects.

I don't feel like it's unfair to white people and it doesn't threaten me at all, maybe I'm just naive in that I've never clicked on a trending post and thought 'this is just for white people', I've simply thought 'this is a post about people'.

Langsdestiny · 09/09/2020 13:55

Dear god op, cant believe you have had to wade through this shit show. Glad MNHQ are listening, I will say if the experience of the feminism board is anything to go by it will need some careful moderation from MN, but they have been very good at zapping arseholes lately.

Itisbetter · 09/09/2020 13:57

I’m not sure when I answered I was thinking any more than OP wanted to know if their was an appetite for it? After all nobody wants to start a new board and then have no response.

Personally I think less boards works better. We saw that in the SN boards. They split into subsections and the whole thing lost a lot of momentum.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 09/09/2020 13:59

How would anyone know that the posters using ethnicity specific boards belonged to that ethnicity?
It could end up flooded with racists, pretenders, trolls etc etc.

At the very least I hope they restrict it somehow to accounts over a certain age.

Fere · 09/09/2020 14:01

@Dandelionz

Class privilege is definitely a thing. However, it does not negate the existence of white privilege.

The fact that people don't feel privileged doesn't mean that they aren't. It just means that they have never had to think about it.

Which one makes you more disadvantaged though? I've had black families in my life that own their own property, earn more money, have had extensions added to their houses etc, while some of their white friends live in crappy council houses with bare floorboards and mould etc. Blanket "you're white so more privileged than me" helps nobody. Whites are privileged in that they don't experience racism, but that does not mean that, say a disabled, gay, white woman living in poverty is automatically more privileged than an able-bodied, straight middle-class black man. There are many strands that make up privilege.

@Dandelionz there's privilege and there's white privilege. You can't compare those 2 because they describe different type of privileges. I can't explain it to you in one or two sentences those (there are several books about that) because the reason they exist and prevail are complex subjects. I don't want to trivialize either.
Itisbetter · 09/09/2020 14:01

It could end up flooded with racists, pretenders, trolls etc etc. true of all boards.

Moderation is key.

Well if that was the case, then the racism on here is even worse than people think.

No point not doing something because of what potentially might happen.

AMemeByAnyOtherName · 09/09/2020 14:05

@MonkeyToesOfDoom I've found the people who troll the feminism boards actually give a good insight into why that separate space is needed in the first place.

I imagine I'll feel the same about trolls on an Afro-Caribbean board.

Itisbetter · 09/09/2020 14:07

This is bollocks

If dedicated boards/sections help the Black members of this site, I am all for it. My only caveats would be:

a) zapping the trolls and goady fuckers who post just to cause offence,
And
b) making sure that conversations about racism and combating it don't get filed away and ignored "black issues". Perhaps make that a top-nav board? As a white person, I want to hear about and help stop the crap happening to black (and Asian) people in this country.

AMemeByAnyOtherName · 09/09/2020 14:11

@heartsonacake those threads were no more racist than your posts are written in German.

If you tell a particular race that they cannot face racism because they experience it less than yes, you are racist.

SleepingStandingUp · 09/09/2020 14:13

religions, ... ethnicity's, ... races, ...political affiliation, ... gender, ... species & every other sub group of human categorisation?

Omg Im excited now, what sub groups of species are there? I thought there was just humans but I'm so excited at the idea that there's another species out there able to use MN. I'm assuming like Neanderthal where they're not homo sapiens but we have common ancestors?
