Because bitter male cucumbers don't bring joy, but phallic aubergines can raise an irreverent smile.

AD chat continues about life, the universe and everything. We know the answer is 42 but what is the question?
6x7?
How many roads must a man walk down?
How many unsadly reincarnations have PHE put into the database?

Ooh we had gin and tonic sorbet as a palate cleanser at our wedding. I might try making some next time the in laws are over (if they ever make it over from Spain Grin)

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 14/08/2020 13:49

Oooh, I want gin and tonic sorbet!

I get anxious about playdates too. DD is a sociable soul, so it's important to have them, but I'm always convinced that her friends' parents are judging our house (and by extension me).

Drivingdownthe101 · 14/08/2020 13:52

Speaking of play dates, we currently have the noisiest child ever at our house! She also keeps talking in an awful fake American accent (she’s 5). I’m hiding in the kitchen eating chocolate Grin

You need to scope out the other mums before extending the arm of friendship.

You’re looking for the winning combo of slightly slatternly with a good dollop of humour.

Eye-rolling is usually a dead giveaway.

We need that gin and tonic sorbet recipe 🍸🍦

Drivingdownthe101 · 14/08/2020 13:59

I usually aim for the children of mothers who are happy to drink wine on play dates.

Welcometothelifeboatparty · 14/08/2020 14:06

courgette or maybe squash?

We've got those really cute pattypan squashes this year. They're a lot of fun

Welcometothelifeboatparty · 14/08/2020 14:10

These

Just interrupting to say I am currently growing what can only be described as a triffid. Some member of squash family and now at over 12 foot long and with arms and legs growing all over my lawn, fence and garden parasol , it is fruiting! I think its a marrow, as one of the fruit is about the size of a bowling ball now ......

Two small points

  1. We dont like marrow
  2. I never bloody planted it!!!!!

Wondering if marrow seeds are part of wild bird seed!!!!

Welcometothelifeboatparty · 14/08/2020 14:14

Ooh that does sound alarming! Might need to remove the bowling ball before you have heavy rain, or it'll become a zeppelin overnight Grin

Marrow is nice stuffed with garlicky turkey mince.....

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 14/08/2020 14:19

I wouldn't know what to do with a marrow - I think I was fed them as a child and didn't like them.

Pity it's not a pumpkin- DH says they're like triffids and doesn't think we'd have the space to grow them.

BBC Coronavirus cases stable across most of England

An estimated 1 in 1,900, or 28,300 people in England currently have the virus.

The ONS said evidence of a "small increase" people testing positive in July has now stabilised.
...
In areas where there have been spikes, more testing takes place.

Looking at the government's figures, this can make it look like cases are rising, when in fact more are simply being uncovered.

...
The Covid Symptom Study app run by company ZOE and researchers at King's College London shows a similar picture.

It estimates 22,702 people currently have symptomatic Covid in the UK.

Taswama · 14/08/2020 14:20

We're off to Sutton Bank tomorrow.
I lost contact with my NCT group as one of the few to return to work full time.
Kids went to nursery attached to local private school rather than the one that only did mornings attached to state primary.
Can someone explain the pre booking thing as well? Such a pain.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 14/08/2020 14:43

Oh I'm an idiot, I've dipped my toes into a "masks for drop offs at school" threat. I can feel my blood pressure rising Angry

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 14/08/2020 14:50

And now I'm on a soft play one 😂 What is wrong with me! Must put Mumsnet down....

bakingcupcakes · 14/08/2020 15:00

Female cucumber flowers have a very tiny embryonic cucumber attached to them. Male ones are just flowers.

I've got a rather feeble pumpkin plant growing. Think this might be the first year that DS doesn't have a pumpkin from our garden to carve. No idea what's gone wrong.

I've got my gin! It was unbearable in the shopping centre but I did everything. Loads of people not wearing masks. I was quite surprised. I tried very hard with mine but it was horrible. I've not touched my face that much in public since March. Fingers crossed there was no covid lurking on the shelves.

It's DS's birthday tomorrow so going to hide he balloons and put the shopping away before I go and pick him up. He was very excited when I left because my parents are having him alone for the first time in ages.

I've cracked open the wine to have a spritzer (it's friday and after midday)

I so want to follow suit - or a long, very cold gin and tonic, but I've got a smear booked for 4.15 and going in smelling of alcohol may not be a good idea. Definitely as soon as I get back though

It's this:

www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/gin-tonic-sorbet%3famp

But I use juice of a whole lemon and 6tbsp of gin

Just leaving this here again for those who missed its shiny potency last time

No you all know me and how I have raged at Dripford being so slow to ease things. To my shame I am coming around to his way of slowly, slowly, he has delayed households again, but still no masks, he was agin travel abroad, and look how that has turned out. The story of the hare and the tortoise comes to mind.

I really think the yep you can do this today and the u turns tomorrow are more infuriating than the actually we are not going to do this yet.

We now have friends who have to get back from their own home in France in the next 24 hours or so, I would not like to be in their shoes.

Just back from Conwy, no masks but people doing the avoidance distancing dance still. Seems chilled all things considered.

Willow2017 · 14/08/2020 16:23

Domina Hope it went brilliantly for you.

Loving the triffid! Need a photo😄

I need to get job hunting that place is all kinds of awful. The staff are ok but the company not so much. Couldn't run the proverbial...
It's an accident waiting to happen. So annoyed that yet another job where employees are expected to give 150% for minimum wage.

Wine o clock😉

Vintagelovingmum · 14/08/2020 17:05

@LadyOfTheImprovisedBath
Does it appear the bbc are slightly changing their story from project fear

IAintentDead · 14/08/2020 17:12

Hmph!

What a waste of time, and all my own fault for not reading the appointment text properly. I only turned up 5 weeks early. 11 Sept not 14 Aug. If I don't put it on my calendar I'm likely to forget next time.

Long cold G&T on the go now.

CruCru · 14/08/2020 17:13

Ugh. There are some really horrible comments on Next Door about how, even if people have disabilities, there is no excuse to not wear a mask. Sitting on my hands.
