ADs deflower male cucumbers for the Greater Good. All phallic aubergines welcome .

Because bitter male cucumbers don't bring joy, but phallic aubergines can raise an irreverent smile.

AD chat continues about life, the universe and everything. We know the answer is 42 but what is the question?
6x7?
How many roads must a man walk down?
How many unsadly reincarnations have PHE put into the database?

As I understand it, false negatives are not very rare and false positives are much rarer when you look at the stats.

That's what I thought the situation was and it's why some posters were being told that negative test results might not be accepted by some schools and insitutions/workplaces instead of 14 day quarantine just in case they were a false negatives.

Though I don't think that attitude is that wide spread yet.

Ibake · 15/08/2020 13:39

@Worldgonecrazy I think she's in Crete at the moment but probably due back soon as it feels like a while ago she went (but it would when every day is 329 hours long)

skeptile · 15/08/2020 14:28

PinkFondantFancy well, that's interesting. I'll look that Telegraph article up right now.

Not that evidence seems to matter.

skeptile · 15/08/2020 14:29

Thanks to all for answering my questions. :)

TheOrchidKiller · 15/08/2020 14:46

Oh god, I think I almost caused destruction & a second wave in Tesco by trying to exit via the self-checkout rather than the approved covid-fucking-secure route.

I don't know that store well, they didn't have the thing I needed, I was having a hot flush under the mask, I was confused. It made sense to go via the checkout because there was no queue.

It did not require a shop assistant to wave me back with her hands & shout (& no, I'm not exaggerating), "GET BACK! GET BACK! You can't traipse through here, it's for paying customers only!" and some stuff about covid & infections.

Don't know what pissed me off more, her treating me like I'd spat on the floor, or me apologising & thanking her.

They didn't have the thing in Wilko's either, which led to the same stress reaction when I realised I didn't know how to get out without contravening The System. I may have caused a massive spike in the curve of doom as I bolted out the door.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 15/08/2020 14:59

I enountered a one-way system in a shop yesterday that didn't make an sense couldn't get around entire shop or get to the till to pay - they said it made sense to them when behind the till Confused.

i aso encounter a rude secuirty guard at small sainsburys as I missed the queue so wnet to Tiger which was full of bargins as it was closing down.

RunningNinja79 · 15/08/2020 15:03

Hi all,

I was on earlier threads, but haven't really been able to keep up.

Decided I must come on to hopefully make myself feel better. Supposed to be going to France next week. Currently working out if quarantine is do-able. I've been working from home since March and have only been going into the office once or twice a week for the last 4 or 5 weeks. All this thinking is exhausting. Why can't Boris want to go to France so there would be no issue?

110APiccadilly · 15/08/2020 15:29

@SodomyNonSapiens

Your understanding is correct. This is an issue which arises in a lot of different areas - where rates of disease are low, the chance that someone who has a positive test has the disease is often also low. This is why cancer screening is often targeted by age - you don't want to pick up too many false positives as that can mean unnecessary surgical intervention for healthy people.

There's a brilliant book on this sort of thing called "Reckoning With Risk".

110APiccadilly · 15/08/2020 15:32

This page has a good explanation (with a cancer screening example) of how the false positive/ false negative thing works.

amicissimma · 15/08/2020 15:38

@SodomyNonSapiens, thank you for explaining. I read the article at least twice and couldn't really see how it reached its conclusions. Now I do.

"... a large % of the population belived getting covid-19 meant at 50/50 chance of dying"
Isn't it more the case that getting Covid-19 means a 50/50 chance of having any inkling that you are infected at all (when you are)?

LivinLaVidaLoki · 15/08/2020 17:24

@Worldgonecrazy
Just arrived back.

The negative test required is only for certain countries and the uk is not one of them. Its currently only in place until end of August anyway.

Have to drive home now will catch up here tomorrow x

ButterMeCrumpets · 15/08/2020 17:28

sits on hands making sure I don't venture into MN threads after almost a bottle of wine with my meal

Bloody lovely meal out and just managed to squeeze in a desert. It's my little bit of normal, not the new normal but the real normal.

Haven't drunk any alcohol for a long time so the wine has gone to my head a bit Shock

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 15/08/2020 17:28

Welcome back Loki, hope you had a great time.

Blobby10 · 15/08/2020 17:49

Had a massive meltdown earlier- it started whilst out cycling with OH when everything just suddenly got on top of me. I discovered that’s it’s really hard to cry whilst you’re cycling fast but once I got home the flooodgates opened 😢. Just the whole thing of not being able to go away, no jobs for graduate son, nothing spontaneous in life due to covid stuff, having to wear the muzzles , my mums stroke, the pressure it’s put on dad (who I’ve always been closer to as well work together) Plus period due hormones and peri menopausal stuff. It all came crashing down and OH just held me whilst full on snotty sobbing for about half an hour. Poor chap- he didn’t quite know what to do as he hasn’t seen me do that in 3.5 years! Hope it’s just a one off 😳😳can’t cope with that amount of lost control again. 😁

countrygirl99 · 15/08/2020 17:49

@TheOrchidKiller didn't you know that you are far more infectious if you don't buy anything? No wonder so many grannies are dying with that level of ignorance I DISPEAR

TheOrchidKiller · 15/08/2020 17:57

@110APiccadilly thanks for the link to the book. I struggle to understand maths & concepts relating to it, so I'm still scratching my head a bit, but it kind-of makes sense, & is very interesting.

Welcometothelifeboatparty · 15/08/2020 18:05

Blobby Thanks and Wine (but only if you are a happy drunk). Not if you're one of the maudlin ones

TheOrchidKiller · 15/08/2020 18:07

@Blobby10 oh love! It all catches up, doesn't it? Flowers

@countrygirl99 oh, that explains it then. I'm doomed. Got the thing I needed in Asda in the end. Everyone masked, everyone in your face, but no tellings-off.

Just had DD upset because, "it's all work, sleep, work, nothing else." I couldn't think of what to say, except, "yes, it is."

Welcometothelifeboatparty · 15/08/2020 18:15

My dd said similar. And I had to agree.

TheOrchidKiller · 15/08/2020 18:19

@Welcometothelifeboatparty yeah, don't know how old your DD is, but mine's 19, & sugar-coating it won't work.

And right on cue, it's rained on the clean washing on the line. Just about sums it up really.

Welcometothelifeboatparty · 15/08/2020 18:24

Spooky @TheOrchidKiller . That's happened to our washing too. Bloody stuff can stay out I don't want dripping washing around the place.

Dd is 17. They are good at cutting to the nub of the issue, I find.

Hope DH gets home soon, my hand is gravitating to the corkscrew already

Welcometothelifeboatparty · 15/08/2020 18:28

In other news I had my hair cut a few weeks ago with loads of layers so it can just be left to dry naturally and do its mad curly thing. I do like it but as I wear glasses I'm starting to worry I may look like Finbar Saunders' mum, if any of you have ever read Viz.

Because that would be a disappointing outcome.

Mrsfrumble · 15/08/2020 18:31

Hello hello 👋

Feels like I’ve been away for ages! I think I’ve only missed one thread.

DH has announced he’s allowed back the office second week of September, so when the DCs go back to school I’ll have a lovely empty flat. Bliss!

Welcometothelifeboatparty · 15/08/2020 18:36
Envy

I went to bed at 9.30 last night to get some space

Blobby10 · 15/08/2020 18:37

@Welcometothelifeboatparty I’m generally a happy drunk so will accept the wine with thanks! 😁😁xx TheOrchidKiller Yes you’re right- it just occasionally gets all too much 😢. I’m normally one of the philosophical ones who is on a pretty even keel most of the time - hopefully I will find that even keel again tomorrow 🤞😘
