Because bitter male cucumbers don't bring joy, but phallic aubergines can raise an irreverent smile.

AD chat continues about life, the universe and everything. We know the answer is 42 but what is the question?
6x7?
How many roads must a man walk down?
How many unsadly reincarnations have PHE put into the database?

@Miljea

I went to the dump yesterday- or is it the Domestic Waste Transfer Station? 😂

I had to book a timed slot on the Council's website, but I wasn't allowed to until I'd clicked about 5 boxes agreeing to this set of T&Cs, that set of rules.

You can only arrive in a pre-registered car, only stay 10 mins (out of a 30min booking), cannot return within a week.

Apparently, only one person is allowed out of the car. They must be wearing a mask and gloves. They are not to approach any of the 'operatives', all of whom will be wearing body cams, and we are reminded that any form of abuse towards the operatives (who are not permitted to go close to your vehicle..) will result in court.

And they wonder why the county is turning into one big fly-tip.

Anyway, needless to say, apart from barriers keeping the REVERSE PARK ONLY cars 4m apart (literally); no one was in a mask, no one was wearing gloves, not a 'body cam' to be seen.

But they still managed to get a 8 car queue!

Bonkers.

We have one tip like that but just across the county border the other tip is far more chilled. No booking but only letting in about half the cars at once. No masks etc.

I tried to keep my distance whilst asking which bin something needed to go in and they just grabbed the stuff as normal Grin.

I'm on a schools thread. Why why why!

Don’t do it to yourself!
Bollss · 15/08/2020 10:59

@Drivingdownthe101 I haven't even said anything remotely offensive and I've been jumped on. I didn't realise teachers could be so thick tbh!

Drivingdownthe101 · 15/08/2020 11:01

Which thread is it?

wanderings · 15/08/2020 11:03

@skeptile Would I present for testing? At the moment, no, because:

  • The test is unpleasant.
  • If it's positive, you then have to stay in.
  • Sooner or later, the result becomes useless.

The only thing that will persuade me to present for testing is an incentive of SUBSTANTIAL freedom including being allowed to play netball, sing in church, and not wear a face nappy.

Ibake · 15/08/2020 11:04

@Miljea wtaf? I put crap in my car, drive to the tip, empty said crap out into various containers and drive off again. They had alternate number plates for about 3 weeks but all back to normal now. Bonkers how different authorities interpret the Roolz.

School opening will fail..... Dun dun dunnnnnnn
TheOrchidKiller · 15/08/2020 11:15

Our council expects people to drive straight home again with a car load of rubbish if there's a queue for the tip. The excellent queue system they devised on re-opening was stopped because they didn't think people would have that much rubbish to get rid of. Loads of people spent lockdown having clear-outs.

Was watching an old Mock The Week last night. Must've been from Swine Flu days as they were talking about the advice then to get a "flu buddy" to collect your anti-virals for you & shove them through your letter box. I thought, "those were the days!" Life was simpler in 2009.

Guess what I'm having for lunch??

@skeptile Why would anyone voluntarily present for testing? Thousands a day are coming forward. Interested what outsiders think. We're all slowly going mad here.

There was a article by a statistician at back of this weeks new sceintist in it it said that survey data was showing that a large % of the population belived getting covid-19 meant at 50/50 chance of dying which is obviously not true for any age group.

Though he was shocked that age and risk of dying was a logmatrith curve something not seen so perfectly before with an illness.

So I supect irrational fear may be it - though perhaps all you can do is limit contact with such people to try and avoid being caught by track and trace.

We had most uniform ever go missing last year combined with suddenly going from dark coats to must be black and getting very OTT about shoes wasn't great. What was worse they've made it near impossible for the kids to access lost property to check - when my two finally with helpful staff member - staff member at desk walked off midway though them asking to check it.

I know talking to guide and scout parents this wasn't just us either.

Doobigetta · 15/08/2020 12:29

Hello everyone. I’ve been lurking for months having more or less given up on the whole site because of the march of dementing. You lot are bloody brilliant, thank you for being here. The Ds appear to have contaminated my other other remaining bolthole, so I might stay if that’s ok.

WouldBeGood · 15/08/2020 12:29

@PinkFondantFancy 😃 How are you cooking them? I have one lying in my fruit bowl, artfully arranged to look proper obscene by DS.

PinkFondantFancy · 15/08/2020 12:33

@WouldBeGood some kind of aubergine, potato, cheese thing - having a crack at this: www.riverford.co.uk/recipes/aubergine-potato-parmesan-gratin

The kids have taken one look, made dry heaving noises and left....

PinkFondantFancy · 15/08/2020 12:33

Welcome @Doobigetta!

Ibake · 15/08/2020 12:35

All the more for you then @PinkFondantFancy
Welcome @Doobigetta

WouldBeGood · 15/08/2020 12:38

@PinkFondantFancy looks delicious and ideal for my somewhat delicate state today: had actual people over for dinner last night, and much wine drunk.

Hello @Doobigetta. A lot of this site is just awful just now but these threads have kept me (relatively) sane.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 15/08/2020 12:38

@Doobigetta welcome.

I did think MN was getting slightly better but I supposed things like France and putting more countries on quarantine list plus English, Welsh and I assume NI school term date near I suspect it will get worse for a bit.

BellaintheWychElm · 15/08/2020 12:39

Did you know - if you die of flu it was probably covid and you had a false negative test according to one mn user. That'll be why more people are dying of flu than covid at the moment. Thousands upon thousands if false negatives going on. They really are desperate to keep the sadly deaths as high as possible.

PinkFondantFancy · 15/08/2020 12:44

@BellaintheWychElm just goes to show how low the basic understanding of maths in this country is. Actually it's the other way around - false negatives very rare but if you get a positive test, the statistician in the telegraph yesterday said there's only a 25% chance you've actually got covid. It's shocking.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 15/08/2020 12:44

Riverford have some nice recipes - their wilted spinach with lemon and garlic was well recipe even by the kids.

We did get their boxes for a while but were disppointed with the quality - which was a surpise as we'd used them years ealier with no such issue.

Worldgonecrazy · 15/08/2020 13:08

We are due to fly to Greece in October. The current rules are that we could get proof of a negative test done in the U.K. within 72 hours of flight, or take our chances in the random testing on arrival. Given the high number of false positives we are going to opt for risking random testing on arrival rather than British incompetence.

Is @livinlavidaloki around still? Would love some advice on Greek restrictions from someone in the know.

bakingcupcakes · 15/08/2020 13:20

@TrustTheGeneGenie I think you must be a glutton for punishment. Yesterday I was reading your altercations with the 'kings' supporters. They made me smile. Grin

Our tip had no queue the last 2 days but they only accept one type of rubbish, one turn a week. My dad's got an excessive amount of garden waste to get rid of and I had a look on the council pages for the tip. It was very confusing. The first page says everyone needs an appointment, the booking page says only vans and trailers need one.

Welcometothelifeboatparty · 15/08/2020 13:28

Our tip always has a queue about half a mile long.

During lockdown our paper and cardboard wasn't collected for six weeks and the tip was shut. So we burned it. Apparently that was wrong too, in case we caused extra breathing difficulties for all the there weren't any Covid sufferers. The neighbours over the back told us this mid bonfire. I may have got a big petulant. Anyway the bonfire continued uninterrupted.

As I understand it, false negatives are not very rare and false positives are much rarer when you look at the stats. It's just that the number of false positives becomes a lot more important when the cases are so low.

The test will pick up 8 out of 10 cases and 2 out of 10 will be false negatives. There is only 1 in a 1,000 chance (or 0.1%) of getting a false positive which sounds great.

BUT currently only about 1 in a 1,000 actually has Covid (it's even less than this but this makes the maths easier)
If 10,000 people are tested, approximately 10 people will have Covid.

The testing will find 8 of these and there will be 2 false negatives
There will be 10 false positives.

If there are only 1 in 2000 people with Covid then the test will find 4 out of 5 and there will be 1 false negative
There will still be 10 false positives.
So like the R factor, the lower the cases get the more false positives skew the figures.

That is what I understood from something I read last week
