Bagpuss, Mr Benn or the Mister Men - which preschool TV programme did you like the best ?

For me it it's the Mister Men with Arthur Lowe telling the stories. We had most of the books at home (as well as the John Mouse and Roundy and Squary books) so that helped. I liked the music in Mr Benn but I always ended up watching either the cowboy or the hot-air balloon - never the knight! Bagpuss, on reflection, was rather quaint but had a sweet side. I couldn't stand Madeleine, the bossy smartarse rag doll.

Never cared for The Flumps or Pigeon Street.

There was also Playboard with the unfortunately-named Christopher Lillicrap. If ever there was a case for the deed poll...I wouldn't mind betting many younger viewers tuned in for the seditious thrill of watching somebody with a sweary surname. Poor fellow.

The Herbs was great but Pashana Behdi would be frowned on now.

Fragile rock & Teddy Ruxpin! 80s baby here!

@SerenityNowwwww

What was Itsy and Bitsy on (those crafty hand puppet spiders)? My granny used to send off for the Itsy and Bitsy craft sheets.

We used to see fingerbobs at school.

Sometimes the false eyelash effect some teenagers sport remind me of those spiders😊

Stop the Pigeon

Gah! I have the Mr Benn music stuck in my head now. Happens every time. Grin

Great nostalgia thread!

Is it my imagination - or did a lot of kids tv shows have a distinct whiff of people on drugs?

Totally – in fact I'm pretty sure there are 'adult' and more-than-slightly trippy Magic Roundabout and Clangers episodes floating around out there.

Always used to wonder where Mary's parents were in Mary Mungo and Midge... you never seemed to see them! They need to make a follow-up episode and call it 'Mary and the Lady from Social Services.' Grin

Fleamaker123 · 27/07/2020 22:12

Loved The Clangers, Pipkins, Mary Mungo and Midge, Trumpton, Chigley..they were on at lunchtime before Crown Court, Galloping Gourmet and Painting with Nancy!

woodhill · 27/07/2020 22:14

Wasn't Rick in fingerbobs stoned?

SerenityNowwwww · 27/07/2020 22:18

I always assumed everyone who worked on kids tv was.

WildRosie · 27/07/2020 22:20

I don't know about stoned but his mind was probably elsewhere. I remember him saying he wanted to do Shakespeare went he came to England. He got Gulliver and Co instead.

He was just a bit hippyish

GiantKitten · 27/07/2020 22:26

As an adult, with kids born in 1988 & 1993, I most enjoyed Come Outside, Rosie & Jim, Tots TV & Thomas the Tank (Ringo version) Smile

Yes, excellent lunch time viewing in the hols, also White Horses and Banana Splits and Pogles of Pogle Wood.

RustyBear · 27/07/2020 22:28

@happypotamus - Play School came before Playbus, so that was probably what you watched - remember Jemima, Humpty, Big Ted and Little Ted? Here's a house, here's a door, windows one, two three four... Ring any bells?

GiantKitten · 27/07/2020 22:28

Oh, also Postman Pat & Fireman Sam!

MuttleysSnigger · 27/07/2020 22:29

And of course, Wacky Races Smile

emilybrontescorsett · 27/07/2020 22:32

I lived Andy Pandy, The Woodentops, TTrumpron etc. I also love Bizzy Lizzie and Little Mo - the little girl used to touch the flower and her wishes came true.
When my dcs were pre-school, they enjoyed Come Outside, Playdays and Bump.

There’s a woman who I see near my office and whenever I do I silently hum the banana splits tube to myself.

She wears huge chunky platform boots, leggings and I have no idea about clothing because she has a massive white wig that flows down to her thighs and covers most of her - and huge round black glasses. She must think I’m very friendly because she always makes me grin.

Bagpuss
Barnaby the Singing Bear
Babapapa
Mr Benn
The one with the mole - it was possibly just called Mole (it was Czech I think)

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 28/07/2020 03:49

Bod
Bagpuss
Chortling and the Wheelies ‘Ello, little old lady”

And then those cartoons on the BBC after school that went on forever - Cities of Gold, Ulysses 31

And Heidi!

spikyplants · 28/07/2020 08:46

Loved all the Smallfilms ones, especially Bagpuss. I wanted to be Emily with the shop.
Play School, especially when Fred Harris presented. We also watched maths programmes in school presented by him. He was so much fun - none of my maths teachers were ever like him, unfortunately.
Chockablock! Also with him as Chockabloke and Carol Leader as Chockagirl in boilersuits and a huge mainframe computer.
Button Moon. The theme will be in my head all day now. Grin
And Rainbow! Always good fun and looked like they were on the verge of corpsing. Was never the same after that "twangers" clip on YouTube. Grin

MiniMum97 · 28/07/2020 09:52

Bagpuss was my firm favourite.

Also loved The Flumps, Mr Benn, Trumpton and Camberwick Green 😊

Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble, Grubb 😀
