Bagpuss, Mr Benn or the Mister Men - which preschool TV programme did you like the best ?

For me it it's the Mister Men with Arthur Lowe telling the stories. We had most of the books at home (as well as the John Mouse and Roundy and Squary books) so that helped. I liked the music in Mr Benn but I always ended up watching either the cowboy or the hot-air balloon - never the knight! Bagpuss, on reflection, was rather quaint but had a sweet side. I couldn't stand Madeleine, the bossy smartarse rag doll.

Never cared for The Flumps or Pigeon Street.

From my childhood I liked Magic Roundabout, Trumpton , Camberwick Green . With my children it was Come Outside, Rosie and Jim and Thomas the Tank engine . Come Outside was absolutely brilliant .

Hiccupiscal · 28/07/2020 10:11

My DS (6) LOVES trapdoor..

Also showed him magic roundabout and he thinks its just so funny. We like to laugh at dougal.

He also likes the flumps, as apparently DP claims I sound like pootle when I have a cold Grin

I loved bagpuss, havent shown it DS yet.
Thank you for this thread for more classic inspo to show DS... i think children's TV was so much more imaginative back then!

The Magic Roundabout was a French satirical programme which was then re-written and voiced in English for the UK.

I loved Mr Benn, Trumpton, Chigley Camberwick Green, Jamie and the Magic Torch, Chorlton and the Wheelies, Bagpuss and The Magic Roundabout.

Interested in this thread?

Morph had a spot on Take Hart, along with his anaemic chum Chas, Gillespie and the imaginatively-named small creatures. They eventually got their own programme. It must have taken ages to produce.

Chorlton and the Wheelies.
The Flumps.
Rainbow.

LunaNorth · 28/07/2020 10:56

The guy from Fingerbobs was in a rock band called Meal Ticket.

Deathraystare · 28/07/2020 14:51

What was the one with Joe, whose mum worked in a cafe? Something kept happening and sad music would come on. He would look sad or embarrased. There was either a baby sister or the mum was called Rosie - Duh was it called Rosie and Jim or something?

Loved Pogles Wood, Chigley/Camberwick Green/Trumpton, The Clangers, bagpuss, magic Roundabout - actually went to see a film called Dougal and the Blue Cat. A naughty cat called Buxton who everyone else thought was nice but Dougal was suspicious of. He had to go undercover (pretending not to be Dougal) and had to not eat sugar (that was hard for him!). We saw Florence's bedroom that was lovely (made out of cardboard!!) and the colours in the film were so bright when we got outside we had a time adjusting!

Deathraystare · 28/07/2020 14:54

Also loved Mary Mungo and Midge - loved the bit when they got in the lift!

Also remember Morph! I still hum the tune from programme.

My brother and I reckon Mr Benn was a bit dodgy!

Snorkelface · 28/07/2020 14:58

@LunaNorth - I might have this wrong but I think the daughter of the guy from Fingerbobs married a member of Spandau Ballet - late 20th century popular culture trivia overload!

SerenityNowwwww · 28/07/2020 15:02

These may be good - but for the full 70s theme you really need to add the public information films. Scary AF.

Deathraystare · 28/07/2020 15:09

Oh Don't I was traumatised by some fire awareness one. A popular newsreader of hte time did the voiceover. It showed loads of prams in a car park and they were set on fire. I did not understand why my mum did nothing about it. I think it was Richard Baker. So in my mind he was the arsonist! Mind you, she did nothing when a Dalek turn to face me on screen and yelled "Exterminate|!".

There was another fire one. A cartoon in which a cart fell in the fire. Mum was always out of hte room doing stuff when it came on so did not see my distress!

WildRosie · 28/07/2020 15:12

Deathray, the programme you're describing is called...Joe! He lived above a transport cafe with his parents, one of whom was an on-site mechanic. In one episode, they moved house. That's all I can remember about Joe. Rosie and Jim were longboat-dwelling puppets from about twenty years later.

I remember going to the Edinburgh tattoo when I was little and there was some promo booths somewhere or other. You know the type - motorbikes, promos for the dog acrobatic team... One had a bloody burned-out room with a real child-sized tiny coffin sitting in the middle. I was only about 4 or 5 and almost peed myself.
Withershins · 28/07/2020 18:33

I loved Mary, Mungo and Midge, and Babapapa. I was actually on PlaySchool as a small child, I was on a shopping trip and was through one of the windows Smile

w0kingpizzaexpress · 28/07/2020 18:44

Bod
chorton and the wheelies
The flumps
Rainbow
Chockablock

If anyone has DCs now who are late teens, do you remember a CBeebies programme called The Shiny Show?

We watched it a lot but DCs can't remember anything about it.

I can't be making it up because if we do something clever, DH & I say, "Give yourself a Shiny!" which was what the puppets used to say.

maddiemookins16mum · 28/07/2020 18:52

Mary, Mungo and Midge.
I wanted to live in a block of flats for years.
Plus I hum the theme tune whenever I have to go in a lift to the top of a very tall building.
Our visit to the Empire State Building was interesting.

Give yourself a shiiiiny!
CoffeeBeansGalore · 28/07/2020 19:36

@TheOrchidKiller Yes I vaguely remember the Shiny Show. There was an orange tiger/cat, a dog & a purple creature. Didn't they do arty crafty things?

TheOrchidKiller · 28/07/2020 20:37

I wasn't imagining the Shiny Show, thank you! The dog was Dogsby. The cat /tiger was Tiggs? I can picture the purple thing, I think it was a monkey? Mukka?

They used to watch films of things like kids brushing their teeth & then they had to remember bits from the film & were awarded Shinys, which were objects wrapped in tinfoil.

Sorry, I've gone off at a tangent. Back to the likes of Bod!

HazelBite · 28/07/2020 20:54

My DC's loved Mopp and Smiff, Jamie and the Magic Torch, but the favourites were Bagpuss, Postman Pat and Dogtarian (sp?) and the musk hounds.
I would put my feet up and watch A Country Practice and Sons and Daughters

BwanaMakubwa · 28/07/2020 21:01

I loved a programme that only I seem to remember, called "The boy from Lapland". It was about a (?) Samoyed reindeer herder. I adored the theme music which was so evocative. I loved Champion the Wonderhorse which was old even in my day, and a programme about a blind girl and a horse..the Moon Stallion? As an older child I loved Huckleberry Finn, again the theme music was so evocative. And Lizzy, I felt so sorry for her and her hair was like mine...

BwanaMakubwa · 28/07/2020 21:01

Kizzy, not Lizzy.

Disfordarkchocolate · 28/07/2020 21:05

Mr Benn
Ivor the Engine

Disfordarkchocolate · 28/07/2020 21:09

I remember the Lapland one @BwanaMakubwa.

Holiday programmes seemed to be shown year after year. There was a version of The Tinder Box I loved and one that was based on folk tales. Many happy memories.
