Bagpuss, Mr Benn or the Mister Men - which preschool TV programme did you like the best ?

For me it it's the Mister Men with Arthur Lowe telling the stories. We had most of the books at home (as well as the John Mouse and Roundy and Squary books) so that helped. I liked the music in Mr Benn but I always ended up watching either the cowboy or the hot-air balloon - never the knight! Bagpuss, on reflection, was rather quaint but had a sweet side. I couldn't stand Madeleine, the bossy smartarse rag doll.

Never cared for The Flumps or Pigeon Street.

@Manolin that's the plot from the book Marianne Dreams, which I loved. I vaguely remember an adaptation when I was a child which is probably what you saw. I didn't like it much compared to the book, but the book itself is incredible

Just looked up Animal Crackers - it was, apparently, Animal Kwackers!

Ooo, I've remembered another weird one - The Singing Ringing Tree. Think it was from USSR (Romania?). A surreal fairy tale. I watched it in the 70s, but think it was older than that. One of things they put on in the summer holidays (to make us go outside?) Like the Red Hand Gang. Funnily enough, there's a group of motorhomes of a similar age group called the Blue Hand Gang 🙂

DannyGlickWindowTapping · 29/07/2020 08:58

Motorhomers, not motorhomes! Lol

I aslo remember a french/?Canadian ? dubbed version of Robinson Crusoe. I think a dog died in the first episode and up to just recently (a few years back) whenever I heard the music it made me cry!!

Deathraystare · 29/07/2020 09:19

I think it might be German or at least the Princess in it was an East German. A communist who was pissed off at playing a Princess! I heard on Radio 4, some guy went back there cos he was a fan and excitedly interviewed her and she rubbished the whole thing. He was hoping to find some props but nothing was left!

Due you remember White orses or whatever it was called. I still have the music in my mind!

Sorry, forgot to say. Yep it is. My brother loved the big fish! I remember the dwarf and the guy (?prince?) supposedly turned into a bear. Not a very convincing bear suit!!!!

Disfordarkchocolate · 29/07/2020 09:25

Belle and Sebastian was fabulous. There most be some people who remember White Horses too, another great theme tune.

L0obyLou · 29/07/2020 09:41

Love this thread! I enjoyed most of these programmes especially Bagpuss and Bod. My children often sit and watch my Bod dvd and also Dogtanian and the three Muskahounds on YouTube.
Does anyone remember "Chock-a-Block" from the early 80s? It was about a big yellow computer. Here's the theme tune!

L0obyLou · 29/07/2020 10:13

@Manolin could the series you're thinking of be Children of the Stones? I don't remember it but found a clip on YouTube as I was reminiscing about old TV shows. The theme music is absolutely terrifying!!!!

woodhill · 29/07/2020 10:21

Saw Sooty and Sweep in London with Harry Corbett when I was little more like than once.

Remember Ramsbottom the snake and Butch

DannyGlickWindowTapping · 29/07/2020 11:05

Gah! Ear-worm now.... "Run, white horses". 😀😀😀

"It's Friday. It's five to five- it's CRACKERJACK!"

Always a good start to the weekend when I was a wee kiddie - with Leslie Crowther and Peter Glaze.
Can't believe it started in 1955!

SabrinaThwaite · 29/07/2020 20:16

There was another creepy one from the 70s called The Changes, where something had happened to make people reject modern machines and technology.

Pelleas · 29/07/2020 20:22

I was a Wombles fan - and Barnaby the Bear if anyone remembers him. He was a bear that ran away to a circus - it was stop-motion animation.

I like most of those mentioned that are pre-1980. I still find Bagpuss rather frightening though - it was the suggestion that the cat was on its last legs that made it sinister. Also Emily wore an Edwardian frock with 70s nylon socks which seemed wrong.

SerenityNowwwww · 29/07/2020 20:27

We all had Edwardian frocks back then - t’was the fashion of the day.

StCharlotte · 29/07/2020 21:59
@SerenityNowwwww yes, I do remember Ludwig, quite liked it! Was it on in the 5 minutes between the end of kids' telly & the News?

There was a cartoon called Noah & Nelly on at that time. Not particularly for pre-schoolers but we watched that. Nelly always knitted them out of trouble. "All aboard The Skylark!"
I swear there was an episode where she knotted a garlic press.

StCharlotte · 29/07/2020 21:59

Here is a clip from the adaptation of Marianne Dreams, showing the stones and the light from the lighthouse @Manolin. Apparently it was in colour but the only print left is black and white, made in the early 70s and probably repeated:
