Bagpuss, Mr Benn or the Mister Men - which preschool TV programme did you like the best ?

For me it it's the Mister Men with Arthur Lowe telling the stories. We had most of the books at home (as well as the John Mouse and Roundy and Squary books) so that helped. I liked the music in Mr Benn but I always ended up watching either the cowboy or the hot-air balloon - never the knight! Bagpuss, on reflection, was rather quaint but had a sweet side. I couldn't stand Madeleine, the bossy smartarse rag doll.

Never cared for The Flumps or Pigeon Street.

Mr Ben!

Loved Flumps, Hector’s House, Chorlton& the Wheelies, Pipkins.

Babar the Elephant was French but the version I saw had him talking/trumpeting in a North American English accent. Odd considering elephants are either African or Indian sub-continental.

Boris The Bold was, I think, Czechoslovakian.

Ludwig - I'm not sure if that was European but it was certainly creative.

I remember a short series of Fred Basset cartoons in the mid-seventies. I liked them when I was seven but they haven't aged at all well.

I saw a whole twitter thread about Noseybonk recently. I thought he was weird but never knew that he was the thing of nightmares for a generation. Morph was a bit smug.

Has to be Rainbow

Crosswithlifeatm · 27/07/2020 21:17

IndigoApple · 27/07/2020 21:18

Mary, Mungo and Midge, Bagpuss and Mr Benn were my favourites. I hated a Handful of Songs and Playaway though! (although I think Playaway was on Saturdays?).

SerenityNowwwww · 27/07/2020 21:19

I still remember watching with my sister when Bungle was commenting on broken glass left in the beach ‘what if an animal has trodden on it?’ - he was a bear-thing. George was a hippo but god along knows what zippy was. I also remember it showed clips with a little girl called Laura. She once had a poo on tv and I was shocked.

Nearly 45 years on and I still remember. Also Pipkins (silly Bertha is no good, chop her up for firewood), peeeeeeeeeg feeding chips and custard to a pit plant, topov the monkey, Hartley the hare... don’t remember the humans though (apart from Bertha).

Crosswithlifeatm · 27/07/2020 21:20

And Playaway, watched with my younger sister and only picked up the subversive element if my parent laughed.

nitgel · 27/07/2020 21:20

Hectors house I have on DVD Grin

EatsShootsAndRuns · 27/07/2020 21:22

Bod, Trumpton, Camberwick Green, Ivor the Engine, Mr Benn and Paddington. Oh and Rainbow and The Wombles. Later, Captain Caveman and Scooby-Doo. Smile

Remember handful of songs, crown court and pebble mill at one? I used to go home for lunch.
I remember the Cedar Tree from school lunchtime!
TheOrchidKiller · 27/07/2020 21:33

Ooh yes to Paddington, Roobarb & Custard (loved his teeth!) & Chorlton & the Wheelies! Was that the one that had a kettle that was a witch?

What were the creators of these programmes on?Grin

Loved The Cedar Tree for lunchtimes when I was ill. And A Country Practice. My mum watched those.

Oh, & I've just remembered Words and Pictures. Think it was an attempt to get us all reading.

And You and Me, with Alice & Crow.

PrivateSpidey · 27/07/2020 21:35

@vampirethriller

The Bertha theme tune was/is a total earworm! Bertha, lovely Bertha Sometimes I think you're a dream Something something something You always turn the goods out something something Grin

Bod was good, I'm sure we used to watch that at school.

mmmmmchocolate · 27/07/2020 21:37

Rainbow 🌈😍 but I watched it as an adult and it was awful!

I also loved something that I think was called Me and You? There were 2 muppet type things that were on a market stall. I’ve never met anyone who remembers it so maybe I’ve imagined it!

mmmmmchocolate · 27/07/2020 21:38

It was You and Me. I haven’t imagined it- off to watch an episode to see it it was as good as I remember!

Fenella was the kettle witch. She lived in a kettle. Of course.
Rubytinsleslippers · 27/07/2020 21:42

Loved all of these but was traumatised when the wax doll melted in Tottie's house.. So much so that the nightmares etc meant only pre viewed programmes were allowed!!!

SerenityNowwwww · 27/07/2020 21:42

What was Itsy and Bitsy on (those crafty hand puppet spiders)? My granny used to send off for the Itsy and Bitsy craft sheets.

We used to see fingerbobs at school.

IndigoApple · 27/07/2020 21:43

Googling Pipkins led me to Hickory House. My God, Humphrey was creepy! Had forgotten about that!

GinAndTonicNeeded · 27/07/2020 21:44

I adored Bagpuss, bought it for my children on DVD

Mr Ben and The Flumps I couldn't chose between as I loved both...I used to get so excited when Mr Ben went into the back of the shop! On the other hand who could resist the cuteness of Pootle?

As a curve ball my favourite was Jamie and the Magic Torch!

marvellousnightforamooncup · 27/07/2020 21:45

Bagpuss was my favourite, but I loved The Flumps, Ivor the Engine and Trumpton too.

SerenityNowwwww · 27/07/2020 21:46

Is it my imagination - or did a lot of kids tv shows have a distinct whiff of people on drugs?

happypotamus · 27/07/2020 21:46

I watched You and Me at school when I was in Reception in the 80s. I remember us sitting in the school library with a huge tv.
I remember watching Playbus although I just googled it and I was older than pre-school when it started. I now wonder what I did watch when I was pre-school age in the early 80s, maybe Postman Pat and Thomas the Tank Engine. I knew Bagpuss and the Clangers from an early age, I guess they were repeated and my mum put them on as nostalgia from her childhood. I have much younger brothers and sisters, so was also watching pre-school tv in the 90s and early 2000s as well as with my own DC over the past 8 years.

didireallysaythat · 27/07/2020 21:48

Ivor the engine.

I should have learnt to play the bassoon
