Who wants a guess (for fun) whether I will get kept in hospital

and obviously lighthearted as probably not going to die

I'm in A and E
Sent by my GP
As my face on one side has swollen up very badly
Gp said he was worried about sepsis
Definitely wanted a blood test
Said I probably needed IV antibiotics

No itching so not been bitten
No tooth/gum problems
No ones punched me Grin

Guesses?

Hi OP. I'm a GP if that makes this any more legit- that looks like preseptal cellulitis. If it worsens it can spread to the back of the eye and can cause permanent loss of vision or sepsis. It's not something to sit tight on. You won't be wasting a bed in A&E. You'll most likely need co-amoxiclav which is a different antibiotic to the one you're on. Please go to A&E. it's really not worth taking a chance!

lborgia · 27/07/2020 22:35

Id say it's pretty clear she's got periorbital cellulitis, and is in danger of losing her eye, or worse, bacterial meningitis, which means it will now cost the NHS 100k to treat her.

She may be dumb, but sending her home with amoxicillin was a bit simplistic I reckon.

Good luck OP.

I'm going to go back

I had cellulitis in my eye recently, wasn’t too bad at first so given a generic antibiotic and had to go back a few days later as not improving. Second doc told me that broad spectrum antibiotics are notoriously bad at treating eye infections and put me on a much stronger specific one.

Go back. You’ll use up a load of resources if it gets even worse, you require surgery or ongoing care etc. You’re being daft!

AudacityOfHope · 27/07/2020 22:37

Why are you making stupid excuses? If you take up a bed it'll be because there's a medical need for it. It's not your problem?

Seriously, from a Scottish person: stop being a pure fanny. Get yourself to hospital.

MakeLemonade · 27/07/2020 22:38

Cross post! Good decision. Hope it’s all ok.

I'm glad you decided to go back. I'm pretty laid back about things, and like most will avoid a&e wherever possible, but even I would have given in with this one. Good luck. X
