Macdonalds hangover

I feel absolutely rubbish today! We used to have about 3 macdonalds a month before lockdown. I cooked the rest of the time. They don't exactly fill you with energy and are bad for you! But it's a treat.

Last night I had my first since lockdown. I didn't enjoy it. I was thirsty all evening.

Today my stomachs feeling delicate and I'm sluggish and tired!

It's made me realise how disgusting it is.

Does anyone else feel rubbish after them? Drinking water and had pepto bismol lol!!!

That’s odd. What did you actually eat. It’s usually just things like chips or a chicken or beef burger which is standard fare.

catlovingdoctor · 24/07/2020 11:17

Yes, I havent eaten one in years. If I do I'm guaranteed to be on the toilet for the rest of the day..so I steer well clear.

Orangemangopineapple · 24/07/2020 11:22

I had a big Mac and 3/4 of a large coke.

I presume my body hasn't appreciated the sugar/salt and it's telling me off?

I don't feel poorly as in food poisoned. I just feel sluggish and my stomach feels yucky.

Agreed, after a break I realise I can't eat them anymore!

Don't know if it's a change in my gut bacteria, different cooking oil or what - but I know a meal is not worth feeling that uncomfortable over!

Orangemangopineapple · 24/07/2020 11:28

@Timeforabiscuit

That's probably it! I have been cooking alot of veg and chicken and even using vegetarian sausages in lockdown. We eat alot of pasta and tuna too with peppers and veg. I think it's got to be a gut change. Which is good. I just feel so regretful today. Feel like I've had a night out. So thirsty and tired.

I have one about three times a year, DD and I crave one once in a while.

We always feel a) starving 2 hours later b) feel quite sick and definitely sluggish by the evening

For fun I looked up nutrition values after the last one, there is basically none whatsoever.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/07/2020 11:32

Remember that the chips, chicken and beef burgers sold by McDonalds are extra special high salt no nutrition versions of burger and chips Wink.

A Big Mac has around 500 calories and 2.3 g of salt according to their website.

Which is about the same as a ham sandwich and a packet of crisps. Best stay away from those too then OP?

ElsieBeard · 24/07/2020 11:33

I don't eat mcdonald's as I think they are crap..but my BIL had one and had the same outcome.

Gottheteeshirtandlostit · 24/07/2020 11:36

I always feel completely knackered about an hour after eating a McDonald's. (And I'm almost immediately hungry again too).
Boring klaxon though - it could be something else that's making you feel thirsty and tired. If it carries on, get checked for diabetes (thirsty and tired are top symptoms for Type 1 and Type 2).

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 24/07/2020 11:39

I'm the same, I've had 2 since lockdown lifted and was so unwell after. Not food poisoning or anything but body shocked from the processed food I'd say. I'm heartbroken because I love a cheeky McDonald's. My only hope is that I'll destroy my diet enough over the next few months to be able to enjoy them again

Mamette · 24/07/2020 11:40

It’s not necessarily the food itself. Eating, drinking a fizzy drink at the same time, and- maybe this isn’t true for everyone but I tend to eat it a bit quickly before it gets cold... it’s not a great combination.

I think the coke or Fanta is the biggest culprit. I would never normally have a fizzy drink with a meal.

haba · 24/07/2020 11:42

Sugar/salt/fat overload. You're probably unused to it after healthier home cooking now.

My DS had never had McDonalds so asked if he could for his birthday (11th). All his classmates eat at McDonald's, KFC, Burger King, Pizza Hut etc very often. I agreed and took him. He was distinctly underwhelmed.
He was even less impressed by pizza hut's offerings Grin

Morgan12 · 24/07/2020 11:43

Mc not Mac.

I love McDonalds. Their food is fine. If you had a burger and chips in the pub would you feel sluggish and hungover? Naw.

MrBattersby · 24/07/2020 11:47

Must be coincidence the rumours of a ban on "junk food" advertising and then these wide eyed and innocent claims that MacDs make you sick.

magicstar1 · 24/07/2020 11:48

We had Burger King the other night and a few months of just home cooking. Both DH and I had upset stomachs the next day...just not used to that type of food now.

BillieEilish · 24/07/2020 11:51

I think people are saying feel sick, not actually sick @MrBattersby

SmileyClare · 24/07/2020 11:54

Your symptoms;
Sluggish,
Tired,
Upset stomach,
Feeling "absolutely rubbish"
Extreme thirst

These are not caused by eating One burger and a fizzy drink what 15 hours ago? It takes six to eight hours for a meal to pass through your stomach and small intestine.

Your symptoms might be understandable if you'd eaten 5 big Macs at once but one? No. A few of your symptoms indicate prediabetes. It could be nothing or a bug.

It's not the end of the world if this has put you off McDonald's though! Get well soon.

Alcoholisshit · 24/07/2020 11:58

It's really not a treat. Even my kids hate it.

BunningAndStrave · 24/07/2020 12:03

Don't comment on the mac. It's obviously deliberate to prove how superior the OP is.
haba · 24/07/2020 12:11

@MrBattersby McDonald's are hardly the entire junk food market though, are they?
It's all ultraprocessed food we should be cutting down on/out of our diets, so all the food giants should be worried.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/07/2020 12:12

I agree, but what I can't work out is why we never see threads like this about all the other fast food takeaways, pubs, supermarket cafes etc.

After all, Burger King, Subway, KFC, Wetherspoons, Dominos, Greggs, etc etc etc all sell food that is nutritionally far worse than a single Big Mac and you can get Coke everywhere but I've never seen a thread like this about any of those.

I can take or leave McDonalds. It's rarely my first choice of food, although I quite fancy a fish filet and fries right now, (I don't like beefburgers whoever makes them) but I just don't understand why there's so many people falling over themselves to make sure that everyone knows that either, they'd never eat there even if that's the only food available or they went there 'just the once' so need everyone to know that they didn't enjoy it.

Bumpsadaisie · 24/07/2020 12:13

It's weird - I had one the other day and I felt rubbish after.

It was just a burger and some chips and I had water to drink - not even fizzy pop - and I dont quite know why the effect on me is different to if I just had a burger and chips homemade at home ... but it is!

Do you think its pyschosomatic?

itbemay1 · 24/07/2020 12:15

Yes! I had first one since Feb last week and felt awful after!

BigSandyBalls2015 · 24/07/2020 12:17

Didn't take long for the "my kid has reached double figures before eating such crap" to appear Grin

Orangemangopineapple · 24/07/2020 12:18

I apologise McDonald's lol!!

It seems to be what's caused it anyway. I am not unwell. Probably was the coke as I usually drink water, tea or orange. If I have coke it's a small glass.

It makes you thirsty because its full of salt.

It's just been an eye-opener to how terrible it feels after a long break. I'm sure many eat them and feel fine.

I think it's as I'm getting older I just can't eat like I used too.

I would definitely prefer making my own burgers at home. But we do enjoy a treat. I'm sure burger king and the rest would do the same.

I agree we all need to cut down on it. I have massively in lockdown. I stopped buying sausages because they also left me feeling like this.

Hoping drinking water will help get rid of it quicker.

Also suspect it's the McDonald's because I've been to the loo 4 times in 16 hours. Oversharing I'm afraid! Sorry! It's been normal though but 4 times!!!
