What tip have you heard about and been incredulous when it actually works?

I saw on Twitter that filling a ziplock bag with water and a few coins and hanging it in a doorway/placing it on the doorstep will keep flies out. It seemed such a bizarre suggestion that I thought I would try it and can confirm it works. I've also hung one near the bins and there hasn't been any flies around for a week.
Are there any other tips that I should know?

I had some silver jewellery that had tarnished and I polished it with foundation. Couldn't believe it worked.

LunaNorth · 19/07/2020 11:12

Chuckling at ‘king shit’.

That totally works.

morriseysquif · 19/07/2020 11:22

@Shannith

Yoga. 1. Actually doing it rather than just buying a yoga mat and wearing yoga pants round the house 2. Doing 30 mins every day 3. Actually listening and breathing when and how she says.

Total game changer. Yoga with Adrianne.
She's not annoying and after just 3 months I am strong and bendy for the first time in 45 years.

Who knew? Well everyone who does yoga I suppose. Still amazed.

And couch to 5k. Followed it to the letter. I struggled to run for a minute. . Started just after lockdown and yesterday ran 8.4k and enjoyed it. Astonishing Smile

See, I know I should do yoga, everybody raves about it. Are you really bendy and who is Adrienne!

I love this thread, please put it in classics @mumsnet

Any tips in cleaning pandora bracelets? I've tried bicarb and hot water - scared it'll damage them if I do it again.

ConiferGate · 19/07/2020 11:43

Not sure if this one has been added as only read about half the thread:

To soften butter from the fridge for baking, cut into cubes (about 1cm or so) and immerse in a bowl of luke warm water. Leave for ten mins, drain, and voila. Perfect baking ready butter, never have to battle with melting the edges in the microwave again!

If you need to take your nail varnish off and you have no nail varnish remover, paint another coat of nail varnish over the top and wipe straight away, it should come off.

youcancallmeow · 19/07/2020 12:13

my tip for today
when ironing if you accidently drop the iron do not i repeat do not try and catch it.
your welcome

ConiferGate · 19/07/2020 12:17

Ouch @youcancallmeow

This is one of the threads where I wish we could have a like button to quickly spot the best tips!!

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 19/07/2020 12:23

I'm not a big fan of reading instructions when I think I know how a product works so I only just found out that when you use the ice cube bags, when the cubes are frozen, if you just pull the bag on all sides, the cubes all get released into the bag. Like this

To be fair to the ice cube bag makers, they do write it on the box 🤣

NooneElseIsSingingMySong · 19/07/2020 12:37

NotasyoungasIwas I bought a silver cloth which shined up my silver Pandora bracelet.

What tip have you heard about and been incredulous when it actually works?
LilMissRe · 19/07/2020 12:47

That ice cube bag hack is clever!

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/07/2020 13:02

@morriseysquif

I mean long shot 😬
I quite liked King shit - thought it was a new expression.
Truzza · 19/07/2020 13:07

If your dog rolls in fox poo
Use tomato ketchup on the area and wash off no weird musky smell!

Ronia · 19/07/2020 13:56

@lifestooshort123

Use a 2p piece to remove crusty lime scale from chrome taps. I was amazed!
Thank you!! Just tried this and it totally worked!
JaneJeffer · 19/07/2020 14:00

Ouch! @youcancallmeow hope you're ok.

Nat6999 · 19/07/2020 14:17

Shaving foam on vomit, blocks the sight & smell, kitchen roll on top to pick it up. I'm emetephobic, it was the only way I could cope when ds was sick as a child before I trained him to cope with it himself.

Kiwiz · 19/07/2020 14:39

I’m trying the coppers in a water bag thing.

Questions:

How many coppers?
Do I leave the bag open?
Does it have to be in the entrance or just next to it?
What if there are already flies in the house? Will it stop them from leavingGrin

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 19/07/2020 14:49

Baby oil to remove chewing gum that is stuck in hair.

hiredandsqueak · 19/07/2020 14:58

Kiwiz I put half a dozen coppers including a couple of 5p in a ziplock bag. Yes fasten the bag. My bag is currently laid on the window sil of the downstairs loo which is next to the front door. Ideally I think they should be hung but I've not figured out where to hang it and it's working brilliantly where it is. I'd spray the flies indoors. My dc have autism and can't cope with flies buzzing and so any that enter here are sprayed immediately although we have had none in since the bag was in place.

Fantastic. Thank you OP Smile

We leave our kitchen door open all day for the dogs to go in and out and seem to have a constant stream of fly visitors so this will make a huge difference to us.

sueelleker · 19/07/2020 15:56

@Kiwiz; do your dogs try to catch them? Mine do.

Kiwiz · 19/07/2020 16:07

Grin @sueelleker I could do with one of your dogs.

We do have one elderly cocker who will make an attempt to grab a fly if it comes to close but he’s usually about 10 minutes too late bless him Grin

WelshMoth · 19/07/2020 16:12

Any tips for oven doors?

Goingdownto · 19/07/2020 16:17

New home, smoky smell everywhere. Need to search the thread to see if any tips for smoke removal, bar pulling up the carpets!

SomeCuntsHavinAParty · 19/07/2020 17:05

@WelshMoth

Run with a dishwasher tablet
And rinse

Also works for cruddy saucepans
