What tip have you heard about and been incredulous when it actually works?

I saw on Twitter that filling a ziplock bag with water and a few coins and hanging it in a doorway/placing it on the doorstep will keep flies out. It seemed such a bizarre suggestion that I thought I would try it and can confirm it works. I've also hung one near the bins and there hasn't been any flies around for a week.
Are there any other tips that I should know?

Oh and white vinegar always seems to work out cheaper buying from supermarket than in bulk.

When you buy tin foil there are tabs at each end of the box. Push them inwards (into the hole in the centre of the roll) and they hold the roll in place and stop it moving around so that you can cut it easily on the serrated edge. It really works! You are welcome!!!!!

If you have a piece of carpet that's been flattened and indented from heavy furniture sitting on it, soak a J cloth in water and place it over the indented patch. Then iron over the cloth and the steam from the iron will bring your flat patch up all nice and fluffy again. Just make sure the iron never touches the carpet directly, always have the cloth between the iron and carpet.

@morriseysquif Hi, what do you do with the elbow grease on the suncream stains? My husband's white top is a mess!

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 19/07/2020 06:58

When you have painted your toe nails & want them to dry immediately, run a shallow bath / bucket of cold water & stand in it. Completely sets them. You're welcome! Smile

Going to try the boiling water on weeds one.

With the validating people's feelings one, I remember a nurse doing this when I was freaking out as a teenager over an injection. She was saying things like "you're feeling afraid, you're panicking," etc. I remember thinking "why is she telling me this? I KNOW that!" But I do absolutely agree with the method. If you say "I'm angry about this" and someone replies with "no you're not"... Angry

@twinzel

Anyone got a tip for bathroom mould?
A paste of baking powder worked well on my shower tile grouting. Applied with a toothbrush.

It's an expression, it means physical effort.

sonicbook · 19/07/2020 08:37

@CaptainMyCaptain no it's a product. Comes in a yellow bottle. Breaks down fats I think. Yellow bottle, red writing. Elbow Grease.

resipsa · 19/07/2020 08:43

Inflating the paddling pool with a hairdryer on cool setting. Magic!

Oh, I'd never heard of that, only the old expression. I've learnt something.

I can confirm that all weeds on my driveway are dead. Thanks to all who gave such a simple tip. Can now get rid of all my Weedol. Thanks

Prizepudding · 19/07/2020 09:07

Read on here about using a rubber brush on carpets to remove hair, I couldn’t believe how much hair I collected and my carpets looked like new. Very grateful for that tip having 2 kids with long hair.

sueelleker · 19/07/2020 09:36

@Amortentia My dentist taught me the breathing technique, as I'm a nervous patient. It's called bio-feedback,

sueelleker · 19/07/2020 09:40

Got this from MN just the other day: to stop chocolate chips or blueberries etc sinking to the bottom of your cake (or in my case banana bread) roll in flour first. Worked great! It's also supposed to work with glace cherries, but I've never had any luck with it.

sueelleker · 19/07/2020 09:44

I've been doing some lockdown decorating and it would be very expensive to buy an extra tin for each different room.
Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a couple of Matchpots?

sueelleker · 19/07/2020 09:53

Alcohol gel or vodka on whiteboard pen marks before washing, gets rid of them. My niece, when she was little, covered herself with felt-tip. We had to swab her with gin to get it off. (It was just before a party, and the only spirit in the house)

Hopeisnotastrategy · 19/07/2020 10:06
@Hopeisnotastrategy my mum told me brandy for cramps! I was on a night out and rang her crying because my period was so bad but I didn't want to leave as it was someone's birthday. Double brandy and they were gone Shock
It's amazing isn't it, and it works so quickly!

Smaller quantities are also effective. 😉😄

I love this thread!

RiftGibbon · 19/07/2020 10:53

Thanks Morrissey. Would it work on old stains do you think? Last time I used bleach and everything turned pink... after putting in direct sunlight no longer pink, but still yellow.

morriseysquif · 19/07/2020 11:01

Here's a tip for musty smelling clothes when you've exhausted everything including washing, airing, frebreeze, spraying vodka, dry cleaning and the smell is still there.

Hang the item amongst clothes that aren't musty for a few days/ weeks depending on size, how bad, the smell goes away.

morriseysquif · 19/07/2020 11:05

@RiftGibbon I had a White top that I thought was ruined and I used the elbow grease stuff. Neat Fairy washing up liquid, I say Fairy because Which magazine says it's grease cutting properties are far far superior to other brands by a king shit.

morriseysquif · 19/07/2020 11:05

I mean long shot 😬

morriseysquif · 19/07/2020 11:06

Sorry, meant to say neat fairy is also good and both together is great!
