Jennie Harries has advised that overweight people should lose weight to reduce their risk during a 2nd wave in the winter. I’ve lost half a stone recently. Is anyone trying to lose at least a stone before the winter?

Encouraged to eat out more/get take aways in August

I don't think that's incompatible with weight loss. I lose weight through fasting though so maybe it's just me.

@Savoury

I think a counsellor it worth a shot! A few friends used hypnotherapy to stop smoking and it worked- wonder if would help you? I can’t recommend it first hand as haven’t been to one but know success stories.

Ken, I fast and have enjoyed the odd take away when I fancy it and have still lost weight.

I find fasting the easiest because I tell myself I can have whatever I want when I eat.

This is a nice guide to self compassion and weight during this time

Interesting- frailty and being underweight were the main risk factors (to the same extent as obesity) mentioned in the BMJ recently.

Jenny Harries...yes I remember her, at the start of this she said about people with COVID in the UK "they will feel a bit rough for a few days at home' OK. Well, most will...

I’ve lost almost 20lbs during the lockdown. Not nearly enough but it’s a start. This whole situation gave me a much needed kick up the backside. I am definitely going to continue until I am at a healthy weight. It’s good to see the issue of weight discussed more openly and in a supportive manner, I feel we’ve been skirting around the issue a bit.

People are often underweight because they have underlying health issues, so not that surprising really.

I wonder if Jenny will combine her advice with advice to the government regarding opening gyms, swimming pools, restarting grassroots sport - all things that would help Hmm

It isn't. I do the same. I had fish and chips yesterday, but I'm fasting today.

I really hope they get gyms open soon otherwise there will be a great depression when the darker nights start and lots of people will struggle to exercise. I run 3 times a week but have to go at 5/530am. I really want to be able to spin/swim by late autumn. Also taking vitamin d with k2 as I've read that may help

I’ll need her to reopen beauty salons before the swimming pools - nobody needs to see my verdant bush floating past them in the pool.

Yes, I've lost 12 lbs since mid May and intend to lose another stone or so. I can't do anything about my shielding issue, I can't do anything about my age (53 so not exactly ancient but not in the first flush of youth either), but I absolutely can do something about my weight and try to get as healthy as I can.

I'm not dieting, I'm just being more mindful about what I'm eating and it seems to be working for me.

There really is no joined up thinking with this government lose weight but eat out at restaurants, gyms still closed, swimming pools closed, bike repair vouchers still not available...

sadly I have struggled with my mental health whilst shielding for the first 10 weeks of lock down. I put weight on - a lot.

AND - this is why I was so furious with the Gov Advice at the beginning of all this; 'stay indoors' - away from all that lovely fresh air and free Vit D. 'Exercise, about 1 hour per day is about right' Hmm - ie stay in, eat a lot through boredom and don't go out. Angry It was the WORST advice for our Mental health, our Physical health and our Immune systems!

And now - we (as a nation) are overweight, sluggish, with immune systems that have just sat back with nothing to do, no germs to fight, and got sluggish too, and we are MORE at risk by being so.

Our Immune systems are the only thing that will save us. Not masks, not gloves Hmm, not 2mtr distance. IF and WHEN you catch this, your immune system is the only thing that will save you. I'm surprised (actually not) that this gov have not issued more guidelines on HOW TO BE MORE HEALTHY rather than avoiding the Virus.

Be a healthy weight, eat healthily, take Vit D with Vit K, DON'T SMOKE, exercise regularly until you are breathless.

Oh and spitting should be a crime.

I’ve lost a stone since May. I’ve known I needed to lose at least two stone for a while but have struggled due to a badly managed long term health condition which affected my sleep. I finally got my meds sorted just as lockdown started and then was furloughed. So not only have I been sleeping better but the weight loss is going well.

Covid has been an extra incentive. My outcomes wouldn’t be great if I caught it due to being immunocompromised.

I’ve used the MyFitnessPal app to help with my diet and am gradually upping my daily exercise. I’m also taking Vit D and iron supplements.

I've lost a stone since Covid. That's just by walking every day between 30-60 minutes. Still eating the same as before. Hoping to continue doing the same and lose another stone before Winter.

Is clear that many need to lose weight including myself and I am trying to do so for my health in general, JennyHarries has though has no credibility with me at all unfortunately along with the most of the rest of them.

Despite what people think of her personally, losing weight is never a bad idea for the sake of your health

Honestly, I certainly wouldn’t care. I’m sorry you feel so self conscious about this... “Beauty” standards are fake and oppressive (costing women time and money), no one should feel bad about their perfectly normal body.

Well I need to lose 5 stones. But neither Covid nor Jenny nor my dodgy hip-which-would-probably-be-less-painful-were-I-5-stone-lighter has given me any incentive so far.
However knowing I'm going to be on the tellybox in two months has. Which says a lot about my thought processes. And not in a good way.

I've already lost half a stone or so in the last month. I have PCOS, so it's a bit harder, but I aim to lose enough so I'm in the "overweight" category, rather than "obese"

Although Dr. Harries isn't my motivation- I'm just sick of being fat!
