Jennie Harries has advised that overweight people should lose weight to reduce their risk during a 2nd wave in the winter. I’ve lost half a stone recently. Is anyone trying to lose at least a stone before the winter?

The interesting thing about this thread is that noone is denying a second wave.

That said, I am trying to lose weight!

lifesalongsong · 09/07/2020 10:13

Regardless of who said it saying that losing weight is a good thing for health if you are overweight you would think would be something universally accepted, but no, MN has stepped up again to find reasons to disagree.

Step away from the keyboard and go for a brisk walk instead

youwereagoodcakeclyde · 09/07/2020 10:14

I am trying 1 stone and any extra motivation helps. I also think if I'm eating better, sleeping better and fitter (regardless of wt) its got put me in a better position.
Optimistic to think I can achieve all but better to try and fail IMO

surely our minds and our bodies are linked. Here is my little loop.....I'm low, I look shit, I'm fat, I'm looking forward to closing the curtains stuffing my face and washing it down with wine. Rinse and repeat.

Some of us constantly berate ourselves and join various clubs and schemes over and over again, only to find ourselves bigger than ever.

My plan is a one or two pound loss per month. I know it's hilarious but that would result in 12 lbs less of me by Christmas. How to achieve this? Attend to MH, keep busy, dont eat rubbish, stop drinking.

ThatDamnScientist · 09/07/2020 10:14

Yes, I started 2 weeks into lockdown weighing 14st 7lbs I now weigh 13 st 3lbs.

Still a long way to go but I have just moved from obese to over weight.

SirVixofVixHall · 09/07/2020 10:15

Jenny? From the block?

Grin
That made me laugh this morning, on a stressful day, thank you.

BaconAndAvocado · 09/07/2020 10:16

We don't need gyms to reopen to lose weight. I've done Couch to 5K and now do Joe Wicks work outs (not the kids' ones)

7 Days of Sweat is great and they're only 20 minutes long.

I've got half a stone more to lose.

BullshitVivienne · 09/07/2020 10:16

Well done everyone on here who has lost weight during lockdown!

MintyCedric · 09/07/2020 10:17

Well I'd love to be losing weight and looking after myself better but with a home and a teenager to run, a full time job and caring for a bedridden father and high maintenance mum it's a miracle if I get time to take the meds I'm already on, let alone worry about diet or exercise so I guess I'm screwed!

@TheOnlyMrsW

I wonder if Jenny will combine her advice with advice to the government regarding opening gyms, swimming pools, restarting grassroots sport - all things that would help Hmm
Exactly

@randomer

It’s not hilarious it’s a very good plan. Loosing 1lb a month is far better than putting on 1lb a month. Slow and steady wins the race 😊

I’m sorry you are feeling low, these are super hard times. I totally agree our minds and bodies are linked.

I feel like as I’m not going into work and not on zoom meetings I’m bumming about in my OHs joggers all day whixh are baggy and much easier to over eat when wearing as I’ve made myself believe they are mine and baggy! Sounds mad I know!!

Nousernameforme · 09/07/2020 10:20

We could all do with losing some weight, a lot in some cases so that's us starting when shopping gets in. Come September when we are all walking more it would fall off anyway but we need to kick start it before then. Vitamins as well we do need to be prepared more than before as I don't think our government will do another lockdown to protect us.

BaconAndAvocado · 09/07/2020 10:23

Nousername

Which vitamins do you suggest?

randomer · 09/07/2020 10:25

Nothing but nothing is going to be " falling off " me anytme soon.

Boris Johnson said the aim is to open swimming pools and gyms in the next couple of weeks. Luckily we were 'allowed' out to exercise throughout lockdown, a wise move, imo.

Quote from the bbc in early part of March

"Earlier, Dr Harries said the vast majority of those diagnosed with coronavirus in Britain are "pretty well" but that they may "feel a bit rough for a few days".

Dr Harries said cancelling big outdoor events like football matches and Cheltenham would not necessarily be a decision supported by science.

"The virus will not survive very long outside," she said. "Many outdoor events, particularly, are relatively safe."

OverTheRainbow88 · 09/07/2020 10:27

Healthy ways to strengthen your immune system
Don't smoke.
Eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables.
Exercise regularly.
Maintain a healthy weight.
If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.
Get adequate sleep.
Take steps to avoid infection, such as washing your hands frequently and cooking meats thoroughly.

I'm another fasting fish and chipper - losing about 2lbs a week by eating in a 12/1pm to 8pm window, but other than F&C, I have been eating very healthily. I've had F&C on Fridays the last three weeks, but they were closed for almost three months from end March to mid June, so happy to support their re-opening. Finances will mean this has to be cut down though...

I was prompted by the issues around weight and Covid, but also by thinking more generally about what I hope for WRT to my weight and health as I get older. In a month I should be in the 'normal' range, if I keep it up.

TheDrsDocMartens · 09/07/2020 10:31

I really need to. Eat too much junk. And too much bread. One can of Pepsi a day is supposed to be my ‘treat’ and after that I only drink water.
Need to move into actually sorting my diet.

I can’t exercise much as my joints are a mess and after 6 falls in the last week I darent go for A walk without another adult to retrieve me .

TheDrsDocMartens · 09/07/2020 10:32

I don’t smoke/drink alcohol. I take vitamins /vit D/iron /magnesium but I don’t sleep properly

It's not hilarious at all. It's an excellent plan. I've lost 5 stones now and it's taken about 10 years in total. Just a pound or so here an there, month after month, year after year. The best thing is that it's far more likely to stay off. The most I've ever put back on was just 2 pounds a few Summers ago which I tried extra hard to get off again.

That is done by just taking more exercise, in my case walking every day rain or shine. Alongside that, just trying to reduce portion sizes, avoid the really fattening foods, but otherwise eating pretty normally.

I used to do the "fad" diets, crash dieting, fasting, etc - all had better short term weight loss, but the weight quickly returned, and more, once I returned to "normal" eating. Rather than losing weight, I ended up several stones heavier. That's when I had my "slow and steady wins the race" moment which has worked.

I'd add zinc to that list as well (though not actually a vitamin).
Astrabees · 09/07/2020 10:33

Head is telling me my diet is for health reasons, heart is far more interested in fitting into smaller clothes. Whatever the reason my health and appearance would be improved if I weighed 3 stone less and that is my plan.
