Jennie Harries has advised that overweight people should lose weight to reduce their risk during a 2nd wave in the winter. I’ve lost half a stone recently. Is anyone trying to lose at least a stone before the winter?

@igivein congrats on your weight loss - your approach sounds very sensible!

Hinckers · 09/07/2020 09:00

@FizzFan

No idea but the more I see that woman the more I hate her.
That’s strange as the more I see her, the more she’s impressed me. She’s clearly a phenomenally intelligent women who knows her stuff and who can articulate it well. Why would you hate someone who has spent their career understanding how to keep people well and safe?

You do get all sorts on here! Confused

Mawbags · 09/07/2020 09:00

@Blankiefan

That’s incredible! Well done! I’m 4 stone overweight and seriously can’t manage my

Ben Goldacre and a bunch of others also did a study that separated out all the different risk factors, in some clever statistical way.

www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.05.06.20092999v1.full.pdf+html

Look at page 11. You can see that they group BMI under 30 together. BMI 30-35 is much less risk than diabetes, for example. You can se BMI 30-35 is about the same increased risk as never having smoked (annoyingly, being an ex-smoker puts you at decreased risk, because life is weird like that).

Weight in itself is not the thing to worry about.

FenellaVelour · 09/07/2020 09:05

I really need to sort myself out too but first and foremost need to work on my mental health.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 09/07/2020 09:09

Jenny? From the block?

igivein · 09/07/2020 09:10

@OverTheRainbow88 and @PerditaNitt thanks.

I must admit I'm feeling loads better in myself, which also encourages me to keep going.

It's just stopped raining here so I'm off out for my walk now - when it comes to exercise I'm definitely a morning person.

I read this morning that swimming pools might open soon - I really hope so because I love swimming, so it would be good to add it into the routine.

lissie123 · 09/07/2020 09:12

Yes I’ve lost one and half stones to get me closer to being slightly overweight. Half a stone to go and I’m in normal range. Bloody hard work it’s been. All spurred on by COVID 19 and a sister who struggled to breathe when she contracted it.

shushymcshush · 09/07/2020 09:13

Because if overweight people don't, then they will be blamed for the next wave of Covid-19...

You know, in the same vein as to how it is all the care workers fault this time etc

Windyjuly · 09/07/2020 09:14

Hinckers because utter nonsense has been trotted out since our sorry response to all this started.

It's been farcical except with real people actually dying.
All of them should be sacked I can't believe they are still there preaching at us.

It's been obvious for months that being over weight is a major factor in making things worse. She mentions it now?

The mask fiasco and everything else is beyond miserable.

We need a new team looking at places like South Korea ect who have shit hot pandemic response teams and looking at what they do.

What is wrong with the UK that months in we are still debating on masks.

There is a list somewhere of the utter nonsense spouted by jenny harries.

Savoury · 09/07/2020 09:16

I'm very worried about this.

I have never successfully lost weight - I seem to lack all willpower when push comes to shove. Has anyone been to a counsellor to work through these types of issues? I'm intelligent, financially secure, happy.. I don't know why I can't stick to it. (I'm two stone overweight).

Savoury · 09/07/2020 09:16

Well done to @igivein, @Blankiefan etc

ResumetonormalASAP · 09/07/2020 09:18

Sadly I have struggled with my mental health whilst shielding for the first 10 weeks of lock down. I put weight on - a lot.

I am 2 stone overweight. I know I need to lose it and want to lose it but I have so many bad habits. My the evening I watch tv and eat and drink and feel sorry for myself - repeat repeat repeat

Good luck with your weight loss. I have no idea how I am going to get out of my spiral and do something.

Rainallnight · 09/07/2020 09:18

@igivein Huge congratulations to you. That’s such hard work. Bravo.

Windyjuly · 09/07/2020 09:18

Maw bags can you fast at all? Eg have no breakfast, very light soup for lunch then eat what you want for 7 dinner?

Or try and fast one day a week?
I started back in march, very small steps, ate what I liked the rest of the time, also started very gentle excersise videos. Then, I put a note that in 4 weeks I should see improvement, don't weigh myself or keep close tracks, not that strict, just try a couple of days a week to fast and move more.

2 half months in all love handles have gone, extra flab on arms have gone. Huge tummy has gone and I've not done that much!
I do try and fast, I never eat breakfast, have a broth for lunch or have larger lunch and broth for dinner.

ResumetonormalASAP · 09/07/2020 09:20

@igivein

You are doing so well. Brilliant and keep it up. It is so much harder when older.

Rainallnight · 09/07/2020 09:22

DP and I have both tipped in to ‘overweight’ during lockdown and we want to lose it before winter for exactly this reason.

DataColour · 09/07/2020 09:23

Mixed messages from those giving out advice again.

Encouraged to eat out more/get take aways in August and our local council is pulling up the cycle lanes they have put in place as motorists have been complaining about them.

No joined up thinking in this country.

CandyLeBonBon · 09/07/2020 09:24

@Savoury - I'm the same. I seem to unconsciously self sabotage!

Twickerhun · 09/07/2020 09:26

It’s sensible advice if you look at the corona risk factors... personally I’m taking her advice and getting fitter as it’s only sensible if the current context

vanillandhoney · 09/07/2020 09:27

I've lost over a stone and a half since May. Covid isn't my motivation as I'm not really in any risk category for it but I do feel so much better to be back in the healthy weight category!

If you can do it, go for it. Covid aside, it's amazing how much healthier and happier I feel now.

KenDodd · 09/07/2020 09:28

I heard a doctor on the radio talking about this back in Feb. He was talking about the first wave as if was going to sweep over us all, very much WHEN you get this, not IF. He said lose weight if you have to, exercise, eat health, take vitamins get yourself as fit as you can in the best possible position to face this virus to give yourself the best chance you can.
The advice makes sense just for living life but covid added urgency.

sirfredfredgeorge · 09/07/2020 09:29

The risks from being overweight are considerably higher than the additional risk from covid with extra weight. But if the fear of covid makes you lose the weight, that's great!

OverTheRainbow88 · 09/07/2020 09:29

I find if I don’t buy the food I want to avoid or buy some but not loads for the week that helps! As we do one weekly food shop whereas before I would pop to the shop daily if I forgot something it craved something. Whereas now, I feel like is it worth the risk going into a shop just to get myself some crisps or choc! Whereas before the risk wasn’t there so I would go!
