Jennie Harries has advised that overweight people should lose weight to reduce their risk during a 2nd wave in the winter. I’ve lost half a stone recently. Is anyone trying to lose at least a stone before the winter?

Your health is more important now that ever

mmm, not sure. Also not sure how villifying larger people helps......Oh I know it enables a feeling of smugness.

@Peacenquiet2....enjoy your smug feelin when you hit the menopause. Pause, yes everything pauses.

@randomer I am in the midst of the menopause, so I will enjoy my smug feeling, thanks

@baconandavacado thanks. I'm not being smug, as an above poster has mentioned. I've been up and and down over the years and know personally how hard it can be to lose weight. I have just given some time and commitment to do so, and not made excuses, which I have previously done. I just feel we all have to be accountable for our own health, especially in the current climate..

It did strike me when saw pictures of younger people who had died of virus they were someone overweight but saying that these days seems frowned upon, especially if its a naturally slim person like me saying it,who weighs same as did 40 years ago.It seems now telling people they are obese is like elephant in room, but to me a hell of a lot of people seem to be obese and many of them are quite young, you cant help wondering what problems they are storing up for future. How do you get so obese in your 20s, i often wonder.

I actually agree JFM27. I'm definitely not naturally slim (I have to work hard and am doing so right now to get back to a healthy weight - nearly there!), but I don't remember so many younger people being so overweight (not just carrying a few extra pounds) when I was in my teens and twenties.

When I was at school there always seemed to be one or two kids in each class at school who were overweight but I am quite struck at how different it is now. I work in a school and there are definitely more children overweight and very overweight in many classes - sometimes as many as a third of a class, which I think is a lot. And you're right about it being the elephant in the room, as you're really not meant to talk about it it seems, but it worries me that some of these kids may have a lifetime of weight problems.

I am overweight right now, so I am not one to judge, but it's OK to be concerned without being judgemental isn't it.

I really MUST do this because at 52 and overweight I might fare badly if infected

I started to put on weight when I hit the menopause and definitely find it harder to lose post-menopause. It's coming off slowly but I have to work harder than ever, but I do think it's important to try. That's not me being smug at all I promise, I just don't want to become more ill than necessary because I didn't do something about my weight.

LimitIsUp · 12/07/2020 11:10

Well done igivein on your progress so far

randomer · 12/07/2020 12:34

I am being a spiteful old bat because it is possible on social media to be one. Its not really who I am. I'm at least a stone over weight, more like 2. Husband has thrown the towel in, he is also overweight.

Will try to be less caustic and healthier. Apologies.

WhatamessIgotinto · 12/07/2020 13:11

@randomer I think lots of us don't really feel 'ourself' at the moment. It's such a weird environment we seem to be living in right now, it's easy to fall off the 'nice all the time' waggon so don't sweat it. 😊

Rapid weight loss is a fool's game. Less than 5% of people who lose 10% of their body weight or more manage to keep it off. The rest gain it back, often with a little more on top. This weight cycling is even worse for your body than being overweight, which, Covid-aside, (and just as @ILoveStickers

The fat-phobes are trying, as usual, to scare overweight people into conforming to their aesthetic ideal, even though the medical profession does not have a viable programme for sustainable weight loss, and can see the same mortality statistics showing that being overweight is safer than being underweight.

I have no idea what my weight or BMI are anymore, but I can tell you I feel better both mentally and physically since I stopped worrying about what the scale said and just started taking tons of exercise and eating healthy, natural food instead of diet crap.

So I say piss off, Jennie. I'm not playing your game.

wildone84 · 12/07/2020 18:23

I agree rapid weight loss is a bad idea. I lost about 2 stone over 18 months and have kept it off for a few years with little to no effort. The only thing I did was eat less and I had 1-2 days per week where I only ate 500 calories (a couple of hours before bed so I could sleep without being hungry).

I think doing it over time changed my habits and made it second nature to stick to, long term. I still have one day per week where I skip meals but then eat a good dinner.

I think better to treat it as a longer term goal but there's no time like the present to start.
