Jennie Harries has advised that overweight people should lose weight to reduce their risk during a 2nd wave in the winter. I’ve lost half a stone recently. Is anyone trying to lose at least a stone before the winter?

@PhoneLock

Interesting- frailty and being underweight were the main risk factors (to the same extent as obesity) mentioned in the BMJ recently.

People are often underweight because they have underlying health issues, so not that surprising really.

There are few adults who are over the age of 30 who combine healthy lifestyles with being underweight.

All I could think Jen-nay from forest gump for some reason

My neurologist is the one who motivates me

I’m still chipping away my disgusting self, don’t need to government and their advisors telling me what to do when they don’t listen themselves

DH was back to work today, he's an optometrist so works at very close quarters to his patients. Trying not to worry.

Our immune systems need to be strong. Holland and Barrett here I come!

Jenny 'WHO advice is only for poor countries' Harries?

I suppose this is one of the least stupid things she has said although I would prefer her to focus on actually preventing a second wave.

Throughout this pandemic our government has behaved as if the whole thing is inevitable. All the stuff about introducing measures 'when the time is right', 'when we get to that bit of the curve', 'flatten the curve' (no discussion of reducing the area under the curve), 'contain, delay, mitigate' presented as inevitable stages you work through instead of each being the thing you need to do if you fuck up the previous stage.

They must not be allowed to get away with treating a second wave as just as inevitable.

Porcupineinwaiting · 09/07/2020 10:46

Yes, me. Have been wanting to loose weight for a long while but getting sick w COVID was a real wake up call for me (I didn't need oxygen but was sick for 3 months and still not fully recovered)

Porcupineinwaiting · 09/07/2020 10:48

And my to actually preventing a second wave. Its not inevitable we have one, although it seems government want to follow the Florida model. Sad

Porcupineinwaiting · 09/07/2020 10:48

YY to preventing a second wave

I’ll need her to reopen beauty salons before the swimming pools - nobody needs to see my verdant bush floating past them in the pool.

Just use a razor on the stray hairs?

Anyway, to the point.
It's common knowledge that being overweight is not good for health.

Why is the risk of a worse outcome for overweight people who get Covid-19 the motivation to lose weight? Why not the increase risk of type 2 diabetes, or heart problems? Is it because it's more immediate, or that a 'worse outcome' might mean death?

Windyjuly · 09/07/2020 10:54

The orig can you use self wax strips?

I do and it's better than salon.

I have just lost 1 stone as of this mornings weigh in!! Another 1 stone to go. Feeling so so so much better. Exercising everyday and just eating smaller amounts. No diet. I was so fed up of feeling sluggish and fat. Feeling very positive at the moment. Long may it continue.
Well done to everyone so far!

TheFrendo · 09/07/2020 10:56

She should have said this back in March. Four months have been lost.

PAND0RA · 09/07/2020 10:58

@igivein

I'm plugging away at it.

I'm morbidly obese and 56 years old, and when they first started reporting obesity and age as risk factors it scared me into action.

I've been fasting, low carbing, walking five miles a day and started Pilates - being post menopause I have to throw everything I've got at it, because every ounce is a fight.

I've lost 3.5 stone so far and my BMIs now 36.5 (down from 43) so hopefully I'll soon be celebrating being obese rather than morbidly obese.

Jenny's words yesterday were a timely encouragement to keep going, because I'm a long way from being out of the woods yet.

That’s a great achievement, well done and keep going.

I promise you, once you have reached a healthy weight you will wish you had done it years ago, you will feel 10 years younger.
@Hinckers

Quote from the bbc in early part of March

"Earlier, Dr Harries said the vast majority of those diagnosed with coronavirus in Britain are "pretty well" but that they may "feel a bit rough for a few days".

Dr Harries said cancelling big outdoor events like football matches and Cheltenham would not necessarily be a decision supported by science.

"The virus will not survive very long outside," she said. "Many outdoor events, particularly, are relatively safe."
and she was right

the vast majority of people who get covid do not suffer from symptoms

and outdoor has been shown to be relatively safe

the problem with Cheltenham is that most if it actually occurs indoors - if you've ever been you will be aware that the horse racing is simply a side show for all the pubs, bars, restaurants, marquees etc where people gather in large amounts in very close proximity for long periods of time

lifesalongsong · 09/07/2020 11:03

"The virus will not survive very long outside," she said. "Many outdoor events, particularly, are relatively safe."

The rush to the beaches and all the BLM protests seem to have bourne at least that assertion out, despite the salivation from some for further spikes this just hasn't happened.

I have read some suggestion that the spread at Cheltenham was caused by large numbers of people inside in the bars and restaurants in the town and on the course.

I see we agree @AlecTrevelyan006, your typing is quicker than mine Smile

It has been known since almost the first week of lockdown that being overweight is a risk factor in having a lower chance of recovery, why would anyone need an expert to point out that losing weight might be a good idea?
bluetongue · 09/07/2020 11:09

I can’t fast so I’m doing my own version of the 5/2 diet. During the week I’m strictly keeping to1200 calories or less and strictly no cake, biscuits or chocolate. On the weekend I can have some cake and chocolate and a takeaway or too. I also weigh myself everyday. It’s a bit excessive but it keeps me accountable. Plus, whenever I feel tempted I just picture the numbers on the scale going up Grin

It really helps that I live by myself so it’s easy to keep the ‘bad’ food out of the house.

A lot of people did start to lose weight in March. There's a thread on the coronavirus board about it. This information was readily available by the end of March, though I expect some people denied it, and probably still do.
theendoftheworldasweknowit · 09/07/2020 11:20

I'm not listening to any of our "advisers" anymore, because I have no faith in any of them, but I decided at the start of lockdown to lose weight to improve my odds of surviving Covid.

Have lost over a stone and half so far. Chipping away...

I would guess most other at people are the same position - treating this pandemic as a wake up call.

Windyjuly · 09/07/2020 11:23

Arghhhhhhh so she was thinking of the actual horses racing and she didn't consider the many pinch points of loos, bars, betting stands, turn stiles, people shouting for the horses to win 😂😂😂😂...

A mere week or so later solitary people sun bathing in parks were told off!!

It's utter nonsense.

Megatron · 09/07/2020 11:26

@TheFrendo

All the medicals said this as soon as it was apparent. This was a novel virus so little was known back in March but really, it's common sense, that being an unhealthy weight is likely to cause more problems from any illness at all. We're all accountable for our own weight (for the most part) I became overweight from eating too much and not getting enough exercise so I started to try to lose weight a couple of months ago because the information coming out that being overweight caused more complications for COVid 19 gave me a kick up the arse to be honest. The information she has just given is not new information at all.
ScrimpshawTheSecond · 09/07/2020 11:26

Yes, I'm doing my best.

Had covid (I think) in April. Horrible. Don't want to be there again - I think my weight exacerbated the symptoms.

Doing lots of exercise and low-carb diet.

googletranslates · 09/07/2020 11:29

"Lose Weight

(the new "Keep Calm and Carry On")

PLEASE CAN PEOPLE WEAR MASKS, PLEASE, EVERYONE IT WILL MAKE SUCH A DIFFERENCE

Thank you.

It's not a secret though that being overweight is detrimental to your health, and it quite quickly emerged that it was a risk factor specifically in relation to covid.
