Hamilton the musical. Disappointing!

Just watched it on Disney plus. Its soooo long and yes some of the songs are great but it just goes on and on and feels like a big vanity project for lin manuel-miranda. Very repetitive and boring in the second half. Anyone else agree? Its had so much hype. First 40 minutes I loved it then it just went downhill.

Yes totally agree. I didnt know much about it aside from.some friends totally raving about how amazing it was when they went to see it last year.
I love a good musical but was totally meh about Hamilton.
At least I know not to bother when theatres reopen.

Persephonecall · 07/07/2020 22:30

We managed about 40 minutes. Fabulous production, great performances, but we decided not to persevere. Just a bit meh.

LoafingLiz · 07/07/2020 22:30

I lasted nearly 2 hours, gave up. I think the novelty wore off after about 90 billion songs😂

God no, it’s one of the best musicals ever written! I know lots of people who agree with you though! Smile

HavingAMoan · 07/07/2020 22:31

Managed half an hour. Found I really had to concentrate on it to understand what was happening.

Thought the music was great, but it was hard work.

IKEA888 · 07/07/2020 22:31

phew! thought it was me.
I honestly think it's one of those things people want to say they like.. not sure why

Happybint · 07/07/2020 22:31

I watched all if it. It just went on and on and on!
I did like the king, thought he was great. And the sisters.

I liked it but enjoyed the first half way more than the second.

Happybint · 07/07/2020 22:32

Havingamoan we put subtitles on!
There are much much better musicals. Except lion king, that's also shit.

Can't agree. I thought it was brilliant and the energy amazing. I couldn't sleep actually, I was so pumped. I had been sceptical - could it really be all that good? - but I found it historically interesting, clever, witty and original and it was brilliant to see a cast of, overwhelmingly, people of colour. My only beef was, with the exception of the king's song, the songs weren't generally ones that you'd find yourself singing along to days later - they just weren't that style. My kids are probably quite grateful for that.

Yes I agree, first half was better.

Oh I liked the sisters, I could have listened to more of their songs. They were brilliant.

MarciaDidia · 07/07/2020 22:34

Gah. Double post

Ulrikaka · 07/07/2020 22:34

Never seen it, but it is up there with Wicked in terms of "Musicals that there is lots of hype about but I really REALLY do not want to see".

milkjetmum · 07/07/2020 22:36

I think it might be one where you have to hear the songs a few times to pick up all the lyrics and meaning. We had the soundtrack and the first time we tried to listen I was a bit meh, but after giving it another go I was hooked and cried my eyes out in the car in the 2nd half!

Enjoyed the film on Disney was good to see which parts were spoken to another character Vs inner monologue.

But do think Lin should have let someone else take the lead as the others outshone him imo. Absolutely loved Washington could listen to him all day!

NearWildHeaven · 07/07/2020 22:36

I thought it was ok. I enjoyed it on Friday but was a bit meh. Since then I’ve found myself humming songs and bits of songs and now I’m listening to it on a loop. I think (for me) it’s a grower. I’ve never been an early adopter though Grin

Happybint · 07/07/2020 22:36

Oh now I loved Wicked when I saw it!
Agree, just loved Angelica. Would have preferred more of her.

Yes this! I got Disney + just to watch it and so far I’m distinctly underwhelmed. I thought the exact same the LMM and a vanity project. Some of the songs are OK but it’s generally just meh and very samey. I only stuck the first half there’s no way I could have tolerated it in one sitting, I’ll watch the rest this week.

I know it’s not going to be comparable to a theatre show and didn’t expect it to be but I didn’t expect to find it quite so dull. Just glad I didn’t ever waste £££ going to see it in the theatre, I won’t now.

Happybint · 07/07/2020 22:37

Milkjetmum. Lmm isnt that great a singer at all.

OP posts:
noblegiraffe · 07/07/2020 22:37

It was ok, but Lin Manuel Miranda would never have got the part if he hadn’t written it. The other actors/singers blew him out of the water.

mamaoffourdc · 07/07/2020 22:38

I saw it on stage and thought it was fabulous, lyrical amazing

whenwillthemadnessend · 07/07/2020 22:38

Not seen it but I hate Le mis so I'm in the minority there anyway.

NearWildHeaven · 07/07/2020 22:38

I love Angelica. Absolutely amazing!

Happybint · 07/07/2020 22:40

I love les mis!
