Hamilton the musical. Disappointing!

Just watched it on Disney plus. Its soooo long and yes some of the songs are great but it just goes on and on and feels like a big vanity project for lin manuel-miranda. Very repetitive and boring in the second half. Anyone else agree? Its had so much hype. First 40 minutes I loved it then it just went downhill.

Watched it last night, thought it was incredible.

Saw it in London, loved it. Watched it on TV and still loved it. Have had the songs going round my head for weeks.

Don't understand people paying £100+ for a ticket to see it if they're not even sure they'll like it though, surely that just leads to disappointment... I paid £30 for the cheap seats and I knew I'd like it!

I clicked on this thread on the day the OP posted, because I was also disappointed. I couldn't follow the story and found it long and repetitive. Since then, I've given the soundtrack a go on its own (lots of times), read all of the lyrics, and familiarised myself properly with the history, and I'm a total convert! I watched it again and absolutely loved it. I didn't really feel any emotional connection on my first watch, I was too bored, but I SOBBED on my second watch, and just appreciated the production so much more.

I absolutely love it, and playing the music in the car makes a long journey go by in a flash!

@LittleMachine I think Hamilton is the musical that just keeps on giving. I've been a fan for a while but the whole production is so intricate and most of the details won't even be picked up on by the audience without some research. I was watching a interview with Lin the other day and he was explaining how the original 4 friends (lafyette, Mulligans, Lauren's and Burr) rap using the same rap rhythm style as 80s rappers whereas there was a rapper in the 90s (I can't for the life of me remember his name) that shook the rap scene up with new techniques and rhythms and Hamilton raps in that style because he is about to shake up / change America.

Although I do agree with some that it did feel a little long without the live atmosphere to buoy you along. I also understand that most people don't want to do a load of research before watching some light entertainment. When you see Matilda everything is laid out for you, you don't need to hunt for the meaning of different eleme ts if the show to understand it.

HP I'd love to see it live now, having watched it again. I hadn't even heard of it until it was on Disney+. I can understand people not wanting to do any research too, but I don't mind if it helps me to enjoy something.

BelleSausage · 14/07/2020 17:17

The best advice I had was to listen to the soundtrack before you watch it. The lyrics come out super fast- nearly 200 words per
Minute in some places.

It also helps to know a little US history first.

I loved it and I was actually not fussed about seeing it previously.

PenOrPencil · 14/07/2020 17:19

I made it through the first 20ish minutes before I gave up. Am I glad I never got tickets!

Also glad dh wanted to watch the Mandalorean (?) so Disney+ wasn’t a complete waste of time.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 14/07/2020 17:23

@LittleMachine It's the only play I've been to that received a standing ovation at the opening chords.

Normally the stage door is a scrum and you feel like you are hassling the actors after a hard day's/nights work but in London they had a purposefully fenced off area after the show to meet the cast. I suspect they have a rota but they spent lots of time taking photos, signing autographs and just chatting afterwards. DD was overjoyed to meet Angelica, the King and Hercules Mulligans as well as some other more minor characters.

I’m a big musical fan and I really really didn’t enjoy it at all. Far too long, Lin was grating on me too.

Agree with PP I also had high hopes for Wicked when that first came out and didn’t love that either. I did like it just didn’t love it.

I also only like Les Mis, I don’t love it.

Really enjoyed Book of Mormon though and didn’t expect much from that especially with all the hype!

DryHeave · 14/07/2020 18:53

I watch everything with subtitles, that did help.

riotlady · 14/07/2020 19:03

I loved it! I saw it in London a couple of years ago and was so excited to see it on Disney with the original cast. It was fun watching it with DP as he loves rap and picked up some rap references that I wouldn’t have noticed, whereas I was coming at it from the perspective of a musical fan.

riotlady · 14/07/2020 19:03

Les Mis is boring af though, I’m with all the pps on that one!

Dragonglass · 14/07/2020 21:10

I wasn't sure if I would like as I'm not a fan of rap and hip hop, but I watched it on Disney+ and absolutely loved it. I watched it again the next day and picked up so much more. I will watch it again soon ad see what else I can pick up.

gardenbridge · 15/07/2020 10:38

I recall people being excited about Phantom of the Opera back in the day too

WutheringTights · 15/07/2020 13:11

I thought it was absolutely wonderful and possibly the best musical ever written (huge musicals nerd though and saw it in London). I let my primary-aged children watch some selected highlights and they're still singing bits of it days later.

desperatehousewife21 · 18/08/2020 21:18

I’m a bit late to the party!

Watched it on Disney+ today and loved it. I haven’t seen the stage version, but would love to when theatres open back up. I didn’t even really know much of the history and had to google bits.

Loved Jonathan Groff’s part, I too have a massive crush on him and love him in Mindhunter. He’s so versatile! Why am I always attracted to gay men!?

Thought the music was amazing, I love that’s it’s different to the standard musical theatre tunes. They can get a bit samey. Loved the whole cast. Yeah LMM isn’t the best singer but he created the whole thing, too right he should get to play lead for the first few months!

I’d 100% watch it again, on stage and screen.
