Hamilton the musical. Disappointing!

Just watched it on Disney plus. Its soooo long and yes some of the songs are great but it just goes on and on and feels like a big vanity project for lin manuel-miranda. Very repetitive and boring in the second half. Anyone else agree? Its had so much hype. First 40 minutes I loved it then it just went downhill.

Oh I thought it was so
Good. And I’m really not a ‘musical’ person. But I don’t think id watch it on TV. Somehow time goes quicker in real life when you are out with friends having fun.

superram · 07/07/2020 22:41

I only liked Angelica (though only seen it live not on Disney) I didn’t like any characters. I won’t be getting Disney+ to watch it again!

gotothecooler · 07/07/2020 22:42

Lin isn't the best vocalist, I will give you that, but the writing of HAMILTON is genius. It didn't win a lot of awards for nothing. A quick google will give you lots of information about the show, the rhyming, the lyrics and the production that set it aside from many others. You really do have to watch it more then once to pick everything up, but if you don't like it then there is no point. It's no vanity project though.

I thought it was stunning! The word play was unbelievable and to pack that much history in is extraordinary.

zeddybrek · 07/07/2020 22:44

I loved it! Loved the energy and songs.

LoafingLiz · 07/07/2020 22:44

'Angelica' was Geneva Pine in The Good Wife, her voice is amazing.

I agree the other male actors were way better than LMM. They had so much more charisma.

gotothecooler · 07/07/2020 22:44

Absolutely loved Washington could listen to him all day!

Christopher Jackson at the end of one last time was absolutely outstanding. His face Sad

PatriciaHolm · 07/07/2020 22:44

It's great, but then I have already seen it in the theatre so knew what I was getting IYSWIM!

gotothecooler · 07/07/2020 22:45

I have seen it many times in London and I still watched it twice when it released on Disney+ Blush

Windyjuly · 07/07/2020 22:47

I thought it was excellent but I didn't realise what we listened to at home was only the first half! I was tempted to splash out on tickets and I must say although I am a fan, some songs are sensational.. I am glad I didn't spend a fortune on it!

GloriousTechnicolour · 07/07/2020 22:47

I think Hamilton is one of the cleverest, wittiest, most complex and extraordinary pieces of art ever created. So there sticks out tongue

I absolutely love it, but I saw it on stage first, and
at the time I was a bit overwhelmed and not sure what to make of it. I then became (very) familiar with the soundtrack over the following months, so when I watched it on Disney+ I was blown away. By far my favourite 2.5hours of lockdown Grin

I'm not sure how much I would have got from the Disney version, had I not seen the stage version first.

Didn't love Wicked as much as I wanted to. Les Mis is my all time favourite.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 07/07/2020 22:48

I love Hamilton, have the book, cast CD, mixtape and seen it at the West End, can sing along to every song etc. But I don't think it translated well to film because I don't think it translated well to seeing it 'cold' and I found it felt much longer sat at home watching it than sitting in our cramped theatre seats with the atmosphere to keep you going. When you have to buy tickets a year in advance and they cost ££££ then you do your research and can appreciate the creative choices, the history and the lyrics more.

gotothecooler · 07/07/2020 22:48

You only listed to half the soundtrack?

Blackcurrant66 · 07/07/2020 22:49

I loved it. So many musicals are cheesy or sentimental. This one is cool. Performances were amazing.

I couldn’t hear the lyrics very clearly which was a shame. Could just be my TV though.

ZeldaSmelda · 07/07/2020 22:50

I Just didn’t get why everyone raves about it and I LOVE musicals. Might try it again tomorrow and see if I like it more the second time around

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 07/07/2020 22:50

Also the original hype wasn't just about the play but also about the way that the cast used social media, releasing additional songs on YouTube once a week, mini performances outside the theatre and running a ticket lottery for those who couldn't get tickets to make it less exclusive and so that others who couldn't go could enjoy parts of it.

titchy · 07/07/2020 22:50

I thought it was lightweight when I saw it on stage. Totally hyped up, not particularly good at all. Staging average, songs awful, acting wooden.

Les Mis on stage is leagues ahead.

Mind you I didn't rate Harry Potter on stage either Blush a couple of nice effects but that's it.

Tim Minchin's Groundhog Day though - one of the best productions I have ever seen!

GloriousTechnicolour · 07/07/2020 22:51

@windyjuly

Seriously, spend the money on the tickets. If you thought the Disney version was excellent, the stage version is definitely well worth it for you. You will be blown away by seeing it in the flesh.

Happybint · 07/07/2020 22:51

Been reading up on it and the history. Knew quite a few of the songs before. No way am I watching it again. Almost 3 hours!
Definitely a vanity project, he cast himself even though he was the weakest performer!

Sorry what do you mean, first half?
KAD14 · 07/07/2020 22:53

I thought it was awful. Turned it off after 30 mins. I’m not in to historic musicals/shows having modern rap style songs. Personally think they should stick to songs that fit the time period.

Also agree about Lion King, it’s crap. I actually fell asleep in the theatre.

MrsPatrickDempsey · 07/07/2020 22:53

I think it really lost something in a screen transmission. Hard to put my finger on but perhaps the overall theatrical presentation when they focussed on individuals in close up was lost. The repetition in the music is there for effect and represents a certain character/emotion. I was blown away when I saw it live. Enjoyed it in Disney plus but not as much.

Happybint · 07/07/2020 22:54

I loved the guy who played Burr actually. He was really great and Jefferson.
I did like some of it but 2 hours max would have been plenty. It dragged!

OP posts:
Happybint · 07/07/2020 22:56

That's a good point about it properly being much better in the theatre. More atmosphere. I understand why there was repetition, always is, but it became tedious.

I wasn't expecting to enjoy this musical, but I LOVE it. The music, the energy, just everything. Me and DD9 are super keen to see it on stage.
