Hamilton the musical. Disappointing!

Just watched it on Disney plus. Its soooo long and yes some of the songs are great but it just goes on and on and feels like a big vanity project for lin manuel-miranda. Very repetitive and boring in the second half. Anyone else agree? Its had so much hype. First 40 minutes I loved it then it just went downhill.

I loved it live and on Disney and my daughter is singing along too.

Itsmemaggie · 07/07/2020 22:58

I really enjoyed it and have been listening to the soundtrack since, but we all have different taste and sometimes it’s really hard to enjoy to things that have been hyped.

PurplePansy05 · 07/07/2020 22:59

I saw it live and it was fantastic. Perhaps watching it on TV just isn't the same, I haven't watched it on Disney yet, but I intend to.

i liked the idea but im still in two minds

i couldnt stand lmm in mary poppins i know dick van dyke wasnt great but he was so likeabale

gotothecooler · 07/07/2020 23:01

Definitely a vanity project, he cast himself even though he was the weakest performer!

He didn't actually play AH for that long. It was under a year on Broadway and he opened Puerto Rico where he spent 2/3 weeks in the role.

This was not a vanity project or he would have remained in the role. HAMILTON is huge and was playing in multiple cities until Covid. There have been several A.Hams since LMM

First half of soundtrack relates to those of us with car cd players rather than iPod connection! I also listened much more frequently to first half cd in the car Smile

MummytoCSJH · 07/07/2020 23:03

I really enjoyed it and wanted to see it live when I went to NYC but couldn't justify the ticket price, so glad this way I could see it. I understand the reasons people have mentioned here as to why they didn't enjoy it, not sure you can complain about '90 million songs' though - it is a musical! Grin

monkeyonthetable · 07/07/2020 23:03

It's marmite. A friend of mine loved it and insisted my DC would love it. She kept badgering me to get them tickets and then sent us the soundtrack and kept asking how often they'd played it. They listened to about 5 minutes of it and we all thought 'meh' so didn't listen any further.

Parrish · 07/07/2020 23:06

Someone on twitter said, when it finished, it was like when you switched the extractor fan off in the kitchen and hadn’t realised how noisy it was!

Zhampagne · 07/07/2020 23:07

I honestly think it's one of those things people want to say they like.. not sure why

I think there are just as many people who are keen to tell us how much they hated it to show how original and immune to hype they are. Really popular, zeitgeisty stuff brings out a contrary streak in some people.

noblegiraffe · 07/07/2020 23:14

When they kept saying about how clever he was and all his fiscal stuff I just kept picturing Gordon Brown The Musical and it was a bit off-putting.

Moonshinemisses · 07/07/2020 23:16

It wasn't for me either. It seems a little emperor's new clothes to me. Everyone says it's amazing & fantastic so you feel like you should love it . I lasted 30 mins it was a bit Am dram for me.

LesNanas · 07/07/2020 23:17

I saw it on Broadway, and i wanted to like it, but I was underwhelmed. The cast was giving it everything, and I do (often) like musicals, but I hate hip hop and RnB, so musically it didn’t do it for me. And as regards the much-admired wit, I was all ears, but it’s hardly Stephen Sondheim, is it?

Happybint · 07/07/2020 23:20

Zhampagne I'm definitely not one of those people. I think my main issue was the length of it. And it just doesnt live up to the huge amounts of hype.

I loved it and as a family we saw it the year it came out here.

However, I don't like Les Miserables but the rest of the family do.

FizzFan · 07/07/2020 23:22

I really wanted to like it, I was disappointed that I didn’t.

Jasharps · 07/07/2020 23:24

I absolutely love it. Love the book. Love lmm. Seen it live. Love the soundtrack.

I love hip hop and all the references. I've watched it 3 times in Disney + Blush cried and laughed! Was hoping it lived up to love which I felt it did and actually added something. Kids loved and DH also loved and he hasn't seen it in stage

BackforGood · 07/07/2020 23:25

Oh, this is disappointing. I've heard so much about it and seen it recommended so often I was really excited to see it was on TV. I was planning to watch it at the weekend.

Zhampagne · 07/07/2020 23:25

@Happybint I’ll take your word for it but I don’t think that those people know that they are those people Wink

hollygoflightly · 07/07/2020 23:30

Went to see it in London 2 years ago. I'm not really that into musicals but I'd heard it was worth it so managed to get some cheapish seats by booking 6 months ahead. Unlike a PP I did no research and knew nothing about what was coming up but me and my husband LOVED it. We've been listening to the soundtrack with the kids ever since and all 4 of us (kids are 9 and 7) watched it on Friday. I think the London one was actually better as the guy playing Hamilton could sing ;) and I would def go and watch it it IRL again x

Iamtooknackeredtorun · 07/07/2020 23:31

We have been obsessed by it for over two years. We listen to some of the songs at least every week or so. Have seen it live.

I understand others may not like it but it's unfair to describe it as a LMM vanity project. It's an incredible piece of writing. I think My Shot alone took him almost a year to finish and there's so much packed into it.

I agree he's not the best singer in the world but I think he brings a charm to the AH role. I find it hard to listen to anyone other than Philippa Soo as Eliza and Leslie Odom Jnr is phenomenal as Burr.

R0llonspring · 07/07/2020 23:59

My whole family and I loved it.
My 13 yo DD introduced us to a few of the songs maybe 24 months ago. They are creeping ear worms. We listen to the sound track regularly, have researched the story behind the man so we understood many of the references and have since seen it twice in London. The Disney+ version was stunning, up close and personal, I really enjoyed seeing the original cast, but the stage show in London was engaging in its scale.
I wished the film had more 'long shots' to show the complex movements and interactions happening on stage. The revolving stage was mesmerising. Agree LMM didn't have the best voice, but it was good and his facial expressions were out of this world, particularly in the second half. He was living and breathing it!

dancinfeet · 08/07/2020 00:01

I love Hamilton. Saw it on the West End earlier this year, have watched it twice on Disney Plus, and have to say that the guy playing Alexander Hamilton in the West End cast was so much better than the Broadway recorded version! Also, because the camera zooms in on various characters you miss all the other subtle little things happening on the stage at the same time, it's great that Disney are bringing it to a wider audience but nothing beats seeing a live musical in the theatre.

choirmumoftwo · 08/07/2020 00:21

Saw it in London with DD 2 years ago and was blown away by the whole thing, far more than I expected to be. And to a previous poster, Wicked was also incredible.
On the other hand (and perhaps controversially) I cannot stand Les Miserables or most Andrew Lloyd Webber offerings.
