@Nihiloxica that's what I thought Grin

I not going to pretend I understand the thread title, even with the explanation, but thanks for the new thread!

The orthodontist was interesting, like many things in my town it’s in a repurposed Victorian house with narrow stairs and entry hall. We kept being shuffled around while we were waiting, to let other people in or down the stairs and they had a member of staff whose whole job seemed to be people shuffling. It was a bit like the fox, grain and chicken puzzle. Sadly DDs teeth aren’t quite wonky enough for NHS braces so now we have to decide if we can afford to stump up nearly four grand to straighten them.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 07/07/2020 16:37

Love the new thread title, haven't caught up with the old one yet, just saw it was at 1000 posts and came to chat.

I instinctively knew this would be you.

Can I just rant away and get this off my chest.

The news is doing my fucking head in today.

Firstly “Concerning Tuesday death toll increase sees highest increase for some time”
“For some time” being last Tuesday when the figure was exactly the same. Also, deaths could be double counted and could have happened at any time so why are people still so fixated on this bollocks, surely new infections is a much more reliable figure to focus on?

Secondly, where I live has somehow ended up as a “hotspot” with 6 cases in the last week and a half. But because this is somehow determined by cases per 10,000 population and we have a dense population who did suffer quite badly at the beginning of the epidemic, because that is a cumulative figure per 10,000 that is never going to go down is it, so are we going to remain a hotspot even when we have no cases? Honestly I do not understand how the fuck people work this shit out. Am I missing something?????

Its given all the local dementors a massive fucking boost to try and get schools and pubs and beaches shut. It is fucking depressing, but then I wonder if its me that is misunderstanding this????

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 07/07/2020 16:38

Our orthodontist was very surpised I thought it was hard to get NHS braces.

DD1 has them on the NHS means we get the worst appointment times just want you want GCSE years but don't have to pay.

Apparently DS should be the same as not having all adult teeth - they don't have two like me- means they get them on NHS. He may need one as he's odd things going on in addition to missing teeth.

Still waiting to find out if DD2 is the same though hoping she won't need a brace either way.

I don't think we'd have been keen to pay or have them if it could be avoided - DD1 has a complicated bite and a short lower jaw which can cause issues later on in life - the trips back and forth do take some juggling.

LivinLaVidaLoki - good news Coronavirus: Majority testing positive have no symptoms

Its the Office for National Statistics tests of people selected at random in homes in England - people living in care homes or other institutions are not included in this study. Finding most who test postive don't have symptoms.

Though not understanding how the hot spot stuff is worked out - I'd have assumed you'd be looking at a dramactic increase in cases or hospital admissions - though I don't know what your local D are looking at.

Checking in. Been busy doing fucking laundry :o

BogRollBOGOF · 07/07/2020 17:10

It's great news that most cases are so mild that no one even knows... but all the more frustrating about the toll on society for an illness that doesn't even make you ill Confused

Hopefully this kind of evidence can justify the continuing reopening of society beyond the summer. It does concern me that that progress might stall or regress when we hit flu season. The trouble is it's pretty difficult to die seperately of flu and covid Grin

Teateaandmoretea · 07/07/2020 17:17

Concerning Tuesday death toll increase sees highest increase for some time

There were only 40 hospital deaths the other 115 were the PHE sadly deaths that are randomly added on some days not others.

Mascotte · 07/07/2020 17:30

Hello, love the thread title

NannyPhlegm · 07/07/2020 17:31

Checking in! Love the equation.

Our orthodontist called us today and DD1 has an appointment for braces next month yayyyy. I also managed to get haircut appointments for the entire family in two weeks' time.
Our hairdresser technically doesn't have a start date as Drakeford in all his wisdom has said that he'll confirm this Friday if they will be allowed to open on Monday. The idiot has no clue how business works. You can't just jump up to attention in two days! Anyway, they've started taking appointments on the basis that they can cancel if Drippy Drakeford changes his mind

NannyPhlegm · 07/07/2020 17:34

Right, I am fuming.

On Drakeford's Twitter account, he's going on about how much he loves cheese and is retweeting a thread comparing him to various Welsh cheeses. On his official Twitter account!

Meanwhile entire industries are teetering on a knife's edge. He has no plan for schools reopening. No dates for indoor seating in restaurants. No plan to distribute the arts fund (which he claims isn't even coming to Wales, even though Sunak said categorically it was!)

The absolute shambolic fool of a man.

PatriciaHolm · 07/07/2020 17:41

@Allflightscancelled

The latest from my DD's school about how they plan to open in September:

"with so many students on site social distancing is not the main shield we have against the virus. The main shield is socially responsible behaviour*

Confused

Honestly, as a School Governor - I would say that is school code for "we are not going to make your kids SD. That's pointless and harmful to them. We are going to encourage them to wash their hands and preferably not snog each other, please." They can't say that because they are supposed to be encouraging them to SD, but....

No idea how old your kids are but TBF that applies to any age ;-)

Allflightscancelled · 07/07/2020 17:43

Psst! Anyone expecting to be out on the roads in Warwick between 7 and 8? If so, cancel your plans. DD's having her first driving lesson Grin

On the plus side, at least driving instructors are back at work at last even if we do have to give the guy the money in an envelope that he plans to quarantine for 72 hours before opening it

Allflightscancelled · 07/07/2020 17:45

@PatriciaHolm I suspect (and hope) you are right. Get the poor buggers back to normal.

My dd's 17 and she has a very freeform approach too social distancing, especially where her friends are concerned.

Orangeblossom78 · 07/07/2020 17:46

BBC rolling news is depressing today. Going on about how schools in Kenya going back in 2021! But colleges there are going back...I just look on their news with scepticism now as some of it has been basically, lies.
Interested to see the Brazil president guy tested positive though.

Ibake · 07/07/2020 17:46

@allflightscancelled he's going to quarantine the money but is happy to sit in a car with her for an hour?! Genuine bemusement.

The outside hospital deaths (over 100 of today's deaths) appear to be increasingly backdated; this is a good graph that shows England hospital vs ONS all settings by day of death. It looks very likely we are under 50 per day for each setting now.

And new cases are now being looked at as infections per/100,000 population, and yes of course that should be new ones not cumulative! that's bonkers.

Orangeblossom78 · 07/07/2020 17:48

The pub lady said she was up all evening calling 60 odd people at her pub for one positive case. Hmm. So it seems they don;t just contact the table next to them - well guess they might not know that if they just take everyone's details.

justasking111 · 07/07/2020 17:48

driving lessons oh does that mean test centres will re-open in Wales I wonder, not a sniff of a hint here for lessons let alone tests.

PatriciaHolm · 07/07/2020 17:49

sigh. attach graph, muppet...

The Worldometer site shows the cases decreasing still in the UK...looks positive.

Ibake · 07/07/2020 17:49

@orangeblossom yes, Bolsanaro finally succumbed but it's ok because he's taking hydroxychloroquine Hmm

Am more interested re Trump or Biden getting it given they're heading into peak campaigning season but many states are only just getting going with their infections.

DominaShantotto · 07/07/2020 17:52

Hadn't realised how shit my mental health had got - even with waking up at 3am every single morning fretting - but my nerves are fucking shot. I can't get on top of the damned anxiety and depression at the moment.

GP next week where I'll be told that it's all my fault and to go for more walks. I am so fucking over walks.

Allflightscancelled · 07/07/2020 17:52

@Ibake

@allflightscancelled he's going to quarantine the money but is happy to sit in a car with her for an hour?! Genuine bemusement.

Errr.... Yes. [confused[ too

NannyPhlegm · 07/07/2020 17:54

@Allflightscancelled Great news about driving lessons.
I'm a bit bemused by the cash quarantining. Thought it had been proven that the virus isn't transmitted that way?

@Orangeblossom78 I'll be honest, that has put me right off going to a pub/restaurant. Even with the voucher good ol' Rishi plans on distributing. I don't want to self isolate because of one case that I probably never even crossed paths with. If I sat on the table with or right next to them, fair enough. But the net is being cast way too wide
