From the BBC

"According to reports, there could be a short-term VAT cut for the ailing hospitality industry to help lift demand

However, the Guardian reported that plans to give all adults £500 and children £250 in vouchers to spend on hospitality were being considered as an alternative"

Sounds good! Wink

Orangeblossom78 · 07/07/2020 14:14

What would the DC do with £250 vouchers...hmm trips out for pizza and the cinema perhaps?

trappedsincesundaymorn · 07/07/2020 14:14

The thread title is giving me flashbacks to my G.C.S.E (yep I'm old), maths exam.

When presented with a similar equation and the question "what does x =?" my written answer was..."x is a letter and has no business being in a maths exam"

I failed maths.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 07/07/2020 14:14

In Wales the boilers, loft insulation thing has been going for years.

Interesting - though we've needed nothing like that doing since we moved to Wales as boilers not that old and there is good installation in loft.

Completely selfishly I’d prefer the vouchers.

Me too.

2 new cases in Scotland - and it looks to me like the islands. The dementoring will be off. The. Scale.

Nihiloxica · 07/07/2020 14:16

@Ibake

I've had an energy grant through the post today. Edf sent me an email telling me that I had overpaid on my energy. Then they sent me a letter telling me that I had overpaid on my energy and that they would be sending me a payment. Today they sent me a cheque, for 82p ffs
The Cornettos are on you!
Bollss · 07/07/2020 14:17

I wouldn't mind either but probably prefer the vouchers! They wouldn't be means tested either by the sounds of it so we might actually get them!

Ha!! I bloody hated maths. No idea how I passed tbh. I did however do a GCSE in statistics, and I liked that.

So there dementors I have a bloody GCSE in statistics and I bloody will do understand it! Wink

Checking in - and the energy stuff could be good for us - we still have some double glazing needing re-doing (ironically got one of our original 1930s single glazed windows replaced yesterday) and our boiler gets engineers laughing at it constantly for its age.

Worldgonecrazy · 07/07/2020 14:21

I’m old enough to have O level maths.

I hope the boiler grants are worth applying for. We need to replace ours as it’s inefficiency costs a fortune.

Fortunately not - I’ve just checked the data on gov.scot and it’s 1 in Forth Valley and 1 in Glasgow.
justasking111 · 07/07/2020 14:23

Now all our welsh mail is sorted in Chester, yep centralisation years ago. They have had an outbreak of positive cases, yesterday on FB Royal Mail asking for posties £11 per hour no experience needed start immediately. Bloody centralisation it used to be sorted in Wales. So they are not closing down just replacing workers.

Spudlet · 07/07/2020 14:24

Blimey, started typing this on the last thread, had to pop out and by the time I got back you’d moved on!

Welcome back @Jourdain11! Hope you feel much better soon.

Got DS to have a haircut successfully - DM had sent him an Amazon parcel which he was only allowed to open after he’d been trimmed. Coupled with chocolate buttons and a lot of patience, he did brilliantly - the only bit he really objected to was having water sprayed onto his hair, but it was so long (a mullet, frankly) it was very much needed. He looks so smart and grown up now. He also cycled there on his new tag along bike, which he loves - after he built the Lego DM had sent him, he took it outside to show his bike to it. I could hear him telling the Lego all about it ❤️ DH and DS went for a seven mile ride before DH started work! They both love it, bless ‘em. It was so lovely to see his hairdresser again too, she’s a fellow mum who I met at playgroup, who has a little salon in her house. She’s so good with Mini-Spud and his wriggling.

So we’ve had a good day (up to the point that we had to put the trailer bike away out of the rain - much wailing). And we have tickets booked for the zoo next week(I have explained many times that the playground is closed. Not sure it’s sinking in).

Spudlet · 07/07/2020 14:24

Do we know what the grants cover? Do you think they’d cover damp-proofing?

BubbleIsNotAFuckingVerb · 07/07/2020 14:26

Sorry this was from last thread @Pleasedontdothat

"you think we should all wear masks whenever we’re outside - even if there’s no one around I could possibly be breathing on/sadly murdering? I hate them but if there is good evidence that they would help in certain situations I’ll (reluctantly) wear one - but I’m not going to slap on a mask when it can’t do anything other than make me hot and bothered/smugly virtuous..."

God no, I don't do that myself! I only put it on if I'm close to people eg shops and transport, not in big spaces like parks. I know you aren't meant to fiddle ineptly and keep putting on and off etc so I'm very cautious.

For this reason I have sewn lots of handmade masks for my family. You'll all appreciate this as it serves me right, when I made my first ones I closed some seams using the iron and WonderWeb , then when I held it up to my face to check the fit, I burnt my fucking face as it was still hot. So I hand sewed all the seams on the next one, when I pinned it first and held it up to my face, I stabbed myself in the face with a pin.

Masks are indeed hazardous to your health.

BubbleIsNotAFuckingVerb · 07/07/2020 14:27

And YY thanks for excellent thread title, forgot to say! I really want to rant about governments and their mates and energy schemes, but won't fill up the whole thread by myself Blush

Paradiseinportugal · 07/07/2020 14:27

I'm old enough to have a GCSE in maths, I've no idea how I passed that exam.
I'm weird about numbers though. I remember my bank debit card number, the expiry date, and the three digits on the back.
I also remember my husband's number. All I have to do is read a number out loud about 5or 6 times and it's there stuck in my memory.
We aren't eligible for any of the Government grants.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 07/07/2020 14:28

@Librarybooksandacoconut my apologies, the Orkney numbers have increased so I must’ve missed the day they did.

Bollss · 07/07/2020 14:30

@spudlet seems to be energy saving related. Not sure about damp proofing.

www.google.com/amp/s/inews.co.uk/news/energy-saving-vouchers-uk-government-5000-pound-grants-insulation-497743/amp

Seems as though they will pay 2 thirds of the cost so it relies on the homeowner being able to fund at least a third of it, so I presume uptake won't be great because many of us are skint hence why we haven't replaced our own sodding boilers yet.

MaxNormal · 07/07/2020 14:30

@InsaneInTheViralMembrane District 9 was actually filmed in an informal settlement, that is not a set. So gives you some idea of the level of the problem.
I was horrified when they implemented that lockdown, to great international praise from the WHO etc. I think a lot of people initially supported it because they'd been given the impression that even catching covid would be a death sentence, including for their children. Now that they've realised that's not the case and they instead simply can't feed them, they are not at happy.

Ibake · 07/07/2020 14:49

@LadyOfTheImprovisedBath have read the explanation so many times that brain now hurts but think I've got the gist - they're twats and we're not?
@BubbleIsNotAFuckingVerb I'm sorry, but I did really laugh at that!
@Spudlet love love love thinking about your little boy showing his bike to his lego
Oh, and another one who is so fucking old she's got O'levels not GCSE's

AnxiousElephant77 · 07/07/2020 14:51

I understand that people think wearing masks is sanitary but I fiddled with mine so much in the hairdressers yesterday because it was so hot and claustrophobic that I’m absolutely certain it defeated the object.
