To me, the highly visible masks are prolonging the sheep-like climate of fear, and in danger of making a lot of these changes permanent.

Absolutely

One of the Dementor catchphrases that annoys me most is "it's not forever".

OK, so how long is it for?

Because if there's no end date, and you are deliberately trying to normalize something, then that pretty much is forever.

I will accept no new defaults as a result of this virus.

justasking111 · 09/07/2020 15:04

OH read out something about 60,000 tested positive for covid yesterday, did not argue with him but waited for official results which were 621 positive.

Covid deaths Wales 2, Scotland 0 NI 0 England 83 =85.

No idea how many more England will add later though.

Deaths in all settings today is 85. Positives tests 642.

Doesn't seem to have hit the dashboard yet though.

I posted elsewhere that the response to the virus has shown how easily a population can be manipulated and that they will do the "dirty work" for the masters.

Am I being paranoid?

thenightsky · 09/07/2020 15:26

I can't wait for gyms to reopen. I've never joined one as I hate indoor exercise, but DH is a gym bunny and, as lovely as he is, 17 weeks stuck WFH together is REALLY starting to piss me off and make me uncharacteristically snappy.

I long for the 'old days' when he'd be at the gym for 3 hours on Sat, Sun, Tues and Thur evenings and I could watch shite telly without consulting another adult.

No.

That's what scared me when I felt media and social media wind up was pushing us into lockdown.

Then I was persuaded that it was a public health decision made by people smart enough to know any response had to be proportionate and time limited.

How wrong I was. I have never been more sorry that my initial impulse was proven right.

Someone posted about this, with reference to the ‘Anne Frank spent years in an attic, why can’t you stay home.....’ meme being posted by the type of person who would very likely have reported her for being in the attic.

There’s a book called The Secret Hunters, it’s fictional but serves a a cold reminder that the people who carried out the monstrosities of Nazi Germany were very much ordinary people persuaded to become monsters.

justasking111 · 09/07/2020 15:34

DS loved my steak pie I made the other week, just plain old beef steak, carrots, onions, herbs and beef stock in slow cooker on low for six hours then into the oven with pastry. My OH who fancies himself as the chef in this house was miffed that DS kept saying how delicious it was and would I please make it again decided to take over and make over the recipe today I had everything but carrots so he took it upon himself to get them, he has just bloody returned at 3.30 so the slow cook is fooked. He insists on adding beer and other secret ingredients so gawd knows if DS will like it.

He threw a strop last night when making a dish that I had decided to cook up pasta to augment the meal (him being on this caveman diet himself)

Well AD's I'm unhappy today.

I went into work to collect my things, I barely got a goodbye, no cards no presents nothing. After 5 and a half years. Nothing. Sad

That's shit, Genie.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 09/07/2020 15:41

TrustTheGeneGenie - that's rough - I had one workplace do that to me in hindsight I think best of out of there long term.

Yeah, I mean at least I know I've made the right decision in leaving. But how hard would it have been to get me a card. I'm a bit gutted to be honest!

Orangeblossom78 · 09/07/2020 15:51

Interesting you say this- here there is little mask wearing, either in shop and cafe staff or people in general. I noticed a sweet shop type place with a highly visible cashier with a white mask on behind the counter- no customers.

I think it can be off putting. But I understand totally her right to wear it. People seem to shy away from it.

Ibake · 09/07/2020 15:52

@genie that's shit. So sorry about that. Onwards and upwards to your better new job. If I didn't now hate zoom so much I would suggest an online leaving do for you with your friendly AD's!

Orangeblossom78 · 09/07/2020 15:52

That's rubbish Genie they were probably anxious about giving you things with this situation going on sadly.

That's pants Sad

I've got to collect DS1's school books from outside the school building on Monday. It'll be the first time I've been through the gates since March 20th. I'm normally through 2, 3, 4 times a day depending on what the DCs are up to. Goodness knows how many times I've been past the gates, it's only about 250m away down my road.

justasking111 · 09/07/2020 16:10

Sad Genie, they may be pre-occupied with their own jobs how safe etc. so a bit green eyed about your moving on.

OH just back from Tesco two way traffic now. But he said whilst queuing the staff brought him ahead of a family, when family argued staff member said OH was on his own whereas they had brought the whole family, which was granny, mum and two little ones. Thought that was a bit off to be honest and we were past rationing customers. Then when he got to checkout was barked at to move into the aisle while the checkout operator shoved things down the chute at him telling him to pack when she had finished. Not friendly there today he said.

Me too.

Except she's obvs not leaving the ADs. Smile

KaronAVyrus · 09/07/2020 16:19

That’s pretty shit genie. I had that at one place and it does sting but when I look back they were really a bunch of arseholes.

Worldgonecrazy · 09/07/2020 16:21

@TrustTheGeneGenie

It sucks. I’m sure that they are all nervous about their own jobs. I’m sure the people at the new place will be lovely.

DH might be going to a site in a couple of weeks! He's been WFH for 4m now and isn't often leaving the house, just a few times a week for a walk. Sigh. I'm not anti-social but I do need some personal space.

Maybe I should go and buy him MAMIL gear for his birthday next month and hope he takes up a nice little hobby like cycling Grin

(Although that could be awkward against my running race habit!)

Bollss · 09/07/2020 16:23

Thanks everyone, yes I met a couple of the people at my new work yesterday they seemed lovely so yes onwards and upwards!

@TheGreatWave

Am I being paranoid?

No because that's exactly what happened. SM stazi policing other people, falling over themselves to 'report' any perceived breaking of non existing rules. Perfect excuse to 'name and shame' people and hurl vile accusations and abuse at them. The whole thing was more terrifying than any bloody virus. The idea that we could so easily become what Nazi Germany was was a real eye opener for me. UK is the envy of the world? Do me a favour!
wanderings · 09/07/2020 16:36

@TheGreatWave No you are not being paranoid, and this was what I found most terrifying about the whole thing: the self-appointed Stasi.

I was seriously worried about three weeks in, when something was said about cats possibly carrying the virus, so it was "better to keep them in". Why was I worried? Not about the virus, but that the anti-cat brigade (alive and well on Mumsnet) might start taking matters into their own hands if they saw cats out and about. Fortunately I was wrong about that one.

PickAChew · 09/07/2020 16:40

@trustthegenegenie that's absolutely rotten, I'm so sorry. People can be such curmudgeons, sometimes.

Still, onwards and upwards! I bet you're looking forward to your new role more than ever, now.
