How long were your children in newborn size clothes?

Just that really. Finding it oddly stressful trying to figure out what clothes to buy for a baby I can’t see, that will only last five minutes anyway. Baby isn’t due till November and I would have just got a few bits and then bought when he was here, but lots of small baby stuff is still sold out due to covid panic buying (why?!) and I’d like to be a bit more prepared.
Basically will only need babygrows and bodies.

Not long at all 2-4weeks if that

BikeRunSki · 30/06/2020 20:43

About a month

VinoOlive · 30/06/2020 20:44

He was over 9 pounds so he went straight into 'up to one month' which was 10 pounds.

We had a few newborn size things that came in the baby box (I’m in Scotland), they fit for a few weeks but mostly she wore 0-3 months from birth. She was 8lb 2 so on the bigger side but not huge!

00100001 · 30/06/2020 20:45

About a month.

If in doubt, just buy 0-3mnth stuff

PawPatrolMakesMeDrink · 30/06/2020 20:45

I just put DS straight into 0-3, he was 9lb6, they were a little large for him, but he fitted them after a week or two.

00100001 · 30/06/2020 20:48

Also, different brands come up differently.

Mamas and papas was 'small', Mothercare big.

My sister's 6m old is in 6-9 body suits, except mothercare, where there's still growing room in the 3-6m

00100001 · 30/06/2020 20:50

Look on FB marketplace, there's always tons of cheap baby clothes. You won't mind so much if they don't last long if you've only paid £2 for 10 bodysuits!

Hopefulbride18 · 30/06/2020 20:50

About 6 weeks! I got a mixture of newborn and up to 1 month. Everyone said they’d be out of them in no time but he didn’t gain weight well at first and it took him 4 weeks to get back up to birth weight. Unless your baby is very big/long then 0-3 months will be far too big for the first month.

H1978 · 30/06/2020 20:50

Dd was in hers for about 3 months, she was tiny and was still in some 3-6 month stuff by her first birthday

ifigoup · 30/06/2020 20:50

Everyone always says you can put babies straight into 0-3 months but my nearly 9lb child was swimming in them! I’d say we used newborn stuff for at least the first six weeks.

mnahmnah · 30/06/2020 20:50

Mine both went straight into 0-3. My second didn’t even fit in newborn or 1 month when he was born as he was 10lb 11oz. Always best to get bigger I think and you can easily get supermarket tiny clothes should baby be small

BonestoBones · 30/06/2020 20:51

My baby was quite small at 6lb 7. He was in newborn for about 6 weeks. I had to go out and buy first size to fit well. He was in up to one month until 2 months and then 0-3 up to 4 months.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 30/06/2020 20:51

The up to 10lb stuff... DD1 2 months, DD2 similar. Then DD1 grew out of clothes fast as she grew lengthways without putting on much weight.
(She's now 9years old, size 11-12 clothes and size 3 feet!)

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/06/2020 20:51

She wasn't. Big, late baby.

SockQueen · 30/06/2020 20:51

Less than 3 weeks, but they were 10lb and 9lb12oz so pretty chunky to start with.

BuffaloCauliflower · 30/06/2020 20:52

Thanks all. I was guessing about a month. I really don’t need much do I.

Never! But DS was 10lb 11, he lasted a few days in 'up to a month' then was straight in 0-3 months stuff!

Dullblue · 30/06/2020 20:55

8lb 8oz baby - newborn for 2/3 weeks. Then into 'up to one month'. We are approaching 4 weeks, and the 0-3 is still way too big x

Deelish75 · 30/06/2020 20:55

My first (10lb 3) went straight into 0-3 mths, and then at six weeks we moved onto 3-6 mths.
My second (8lb 9) went into upto one month for a couple of weeks then onto 3-6 mths.

Dhalandchips · 30/06/2020 20:56

They weren't, I thought it pointless so didn't bother!

bashcrashfall · 30/06/2020 20:57

I just squeezed DS1 into the only newborn size thing I had once or twice. He was 9lb 11oz at birth. DS2 was expected to be big and while smaller - 9lb - he didn't lose any weight after birth so similarly maybe once of twice.

Just to note though - not all 'newborn' and 0-3 etc are a standard size or shape.

GrumpyHoonMain · 30/06/2020 20:57

For a month (he was 7 months and consistantly on the 2nd centile for weight for the first few weeks). Then was in 0-3 until 2 months. He was a skinny thing but fairly tall (75the centile).

BuffaloCauliflower · 30/06/2020 21:00

@Dhalandchips I’m kind of of the same mind!

I think my first was in newborn size for 3 months. She was 6lbs 9oz at birth though. Definitely didn't move up to 0-3 until around 3 months.
