How long were your children in newborn size clothes?

Just that really. Finding it oddly stressful trying to figure out what clothes to buy for a baby I can’t see, that will only last five minutes anyway. Baby isn’t due till November and I would have just got a few bits and then bought when he was here, but lots of small baby stuff is still sold out due to covid panic buying (why?!) and I’d like to be a bit more prepared.
Basically will only need babygrows and bodies.

Also have in mind that the different shops have very different ideas of what 'newborn size' is. Tesco baby clothes, for example, are tiny for whatever size they are claiming to be.
Asda - pretty big in comparison.

Boringnamechanging · 30/06/2020 21:41

Never fit, both far too long they were 7lb 9 and 8lb 5

Theglittertree · 30/06/2020 21:42

Both were about 7.5 pounds, both went straight into “up to 1 month”, which fitted them for about 3-4 weeks depending on brand. I had half a dozen body suits and half a dozen baby grows, few bibs, two cardigans, two hats, a jacket and a (0-3 month, didn’t care it was big) pram suit for the winter baby and that did fine. Had about the same amount of 0-3m stuff ready as well in case they were big. We have a tumble drier, they weren’t messy at that age, I didn’t need much.

@firstimemamma good point. Apply to clothes for all ages I guess. Flipping mindful, how will I ever buy anything??

BuffaloCauliflower · 30/06/2020 21:43

DS was 9lb13 so newborn size didn't fit him at all. But in general, from when he was born we tended to buy in 7s. So in each size we had 7 sleeveless, 7 short sleeved and 7 long sleeved vests, 7 sleepsuits and a couple of cardigans/hats (winter baby). We never ran out of clothes

clary · 30/06/2020 21:45

Ds2 weighed 9lb born and wore his new-to-him newborn baby grow about twice IIRC,

The other two were a bit smaller, average weight really and wore newborn for 2-4 weeks maybe. To be fair dd was v sicky so in lots of pix she is wearing 0-3 cos it's all that was clean!

Op I would buy about 4 newborn baby grows and then a couple of 0-3 jackets/carries/hoodies as you fancy, pop them over a babygro and voila. If you need more because your LO is tiny, you can always buy them more. I had the vision of being unable to do anything after ds1 was born, but in fact you (or dp!) can still go shopping!

picklemewalnuts · 30/06/2020 21:45

Mine weren't in newborn at all. 9lb and 10lb5oz. Went into 0-3months.

Liland · 30/06/2020 21:46

I started with 0-3 months (7lb5 and no had no reason to expect a heiffer), but they only lasted a month due to his crazy height. He slowed down when I got him into 6-9 months at around 4 months old.

FrugiFan · 30/06/2020 21:46

My first was in "tiny baby" for a few weeks and then newborn until she was about 9 weeks I think.

Second baby grew out of newborn at around 4 weeks old.

SallyWD · 30/06/2020 21:47

I think about a month

Penguin34 · 30/06/2020 21:47

My daughter was in tiny baby for about 2months then newborn and then first size. 1-3 swamped her until she was about 4 months. She outgrew the tiny baby but then I had to buy these inbetweeny sizes I didn't know existed before!
She does get a lot of use out of things. She's wearing 12-18 now that's massive on her and she's nearly 2

islandislandisland · 30/06/2020 21:47

@BuffaloCauliflower I've been knitting so at least we'll have tons of cardigans..like you I don't think we'll get given much and if we do it won't be useful stuff, more 'outfits'

Theglittertree · 30/06/2020 21:48

And the shortage is more than baby clothes, struggling for various things for my nursery and primary aged children! I think a lot of clothing orders got cancelled by retailers or delayed at manufacturers and combined with everyone buying far ahead there’s a stock shortage.

firstimemamma · 30/06/2020 21:49

Thanks for the reply. We quite liked mothercare sleepsuits etc although they're not the cheapest plus I think they might have closed down. The thing that really helped us tbh was receiving a big black bag full of second hand bits from a variety of different shops but I appreciate you might not have that as an option due to the current situation!

I hope everything works out Smile

Sirzy · 30/06/2020 21:49

Ds was 6lb 14 he started to move out of newborn at 3 months

doadeer · 30/06/2020 21:51

Never, straight into 0-3 months

Robs20 · 30/06/2020 21:52

My twins (both 5lb13 at birth) are 9 weeks and still wearing some newborn stuff. They have just about grown out of most of it though. I would get mainly 0-3 and one packet of newborn just in case.

Theglittertree · 30/06/2020 21:52

My other baby clothes tip for when they’re little and it’s generic stuff like vests - I just bought from one place, in my case mothercare. So even if age didn’t match clothing size, I was at least confident 3-6m would be bigger than 0-3m and so on. I had friends buying “the next size up” only to find 3-6m from Next is smaller than 0-3 from Sainsbury’s!

BuffaloCauliflower · 30/06/2020 21:52

@clary I would just plan to buy more as needed, but after massive baby clothes shortages this spring I’d like to be a bit more prepared in case an autumn Covid spike causes the same problem again

Lockdownseperation · 30/06/2020 21:53

Not at all. I had big babies so they went straight into up to one month. My oldest child was out of them after 2 weeks.

BuffaloCauliflower · 30/06/2020 21:54

@firstimemamma I’ve had some clothes passed on but all bigger stuff, which is helpful as they’ll have things to grow into

I had a November baby and lived in white vests and babygros for ages,

SleepingStandingUp · 30/06/2020 21:55

3 months, then about another 2 months in 0-3 for baby 1, 5lb 6

The fat twins, barely a moment. Few weeks then into upto 1 month (10lb) for a few weeks then 0-3 (14lb). But they went into 9-12 at 5 1/2 months so...

Feetupteashot · 30/06/2020 21:55

If you have tumble dryer you can buy less too
