How long were your children in newborn size clothes?

Just that really. Finding it oddly stressful trying to figure out what clothes to buy for a baby I can’t see, that will only last five minutes anyway. Baby isn’t due till November and I would have just got a few bits and then bought when he was here, but lots of small baby stuff is still sold out due to covid panic buying (why?!) and I’d like to be a bit more prepared.
Basically will only need babygrows and bodies.

@bashcrashfall yes entirely fair. I’d plan to buy enough for a week or two and then just order more, if there wasn’t looming covid and the worry that things will go tits up again in autumn and make things difficult. Lots of people have struggled to get small baby things this spring.

11lber so straight into 0-3 months Confused

Pidgythe2nd · 30/06/2020 21:05

A week -10 days with my first 2.
My 3rd went straight into 0-3 once we got hone from hospital. He was a chunky monkey from the start and didn’t lose any weight.

Yes the difficulty is not knowing if he’ll be 6lbs, 10lbs or anywhere inbetween. I am not very big and the family isn’t in general so no reason to think he’ll be big, but really who knows

I can't remember, mine started in "tiny baby" and we're in those for about 3 weeks and then into newborn.

mrspotatohed · 30/06/2020 21:06

About 5 or six weeks she was 6lbs 10 and very short. Shes chubbed up now though

Barneythedinosaur · 30/06/2020 21:07

Mine was in newborn until 3m, then 0-3m until 6m. Basically stayed a size "behind" as such. 7lb 5 at birth but quite "compact". Had to wear tiny baby for a couple of weeks as even newborn was huge.
Went in to 18-24m at about 22m so still small for age really.

DanniArthur · 30/06/2020 21:08

Honestly, maybe 2-3 weeks then she was too long for them. My DD seemed to take a stretch really quickly!

Serendipper · 30/06/2020 21:11

Mine didn’t fit at birth, my nicely packed hospital bag was useless! This time round I’m taking a few “up to 1 month” from M&S as they are pretty generous. Then I’ve got 0-3 for after but was really glad of a midsize as I hate the swimming in a babygrow look!

islandislandisland · 30/06/2020 21:12

I'm due my first in October but she's likely to be early so I've got 9 vests and 7 sleepsuits in newborn, which at Next is 7.8 lbs I think. Seemed quite a good compromise and I've started getting some 0-3 month things too..so hard to find anything in stock anywhere under 6 months Sad managed to get the bigger stuff from Sainsbury's so at least that was cheaper, might be worth a look.

20viona · 30/06/2020 21:12

My daughter wore newborn from
About 2-4 months as she was only 5lb.

heynori · 30/06/2020 21:12

5-6ish weeks maybe?

1st baby 5lb10oz
2nd baby 6lb

bigTillyMint · 30/06/2020 21:15

Lol my DD was more than full term but too small for newborn stuff so we had to go and buy tiny baby stuff which she was in for 2 months before getting big enough for newborn stuff Grin

This was after the consultant told me my baby would be over 9 pounds Grin She was 6 1/2.

She is now nearly 21 and 5ft2 Grin

BuffaloCauliflower · 30/06/2020 21:22

@islandislandisland it’s mad isn’t it?! Such a baby clothes shortage.

DD one day. She was a long baby.

DS about 3 weeks.

Rubyandsaphire · 30/06/2020 21:23

Ds1 over 9lb was in them about a week.
Dt both 6lbers and lost were probably in for 2 months.

Vanannabananna · 30/06/2020 21:25

Never! Came out 10 lb 1 oz. went straight into 0-3!

grey12 · 30/06/2020 21:28

Are you buying for someone else?? If so I would advise to get big clothes.

Everyone wants to buy for newborn but the child will need a full wardrobe for later stages as well. Also newborns hardly do anything so older clothes can be cute and something besides a babygrow. :)

Chances are the parents already have plenty of newborn clothes.

EnidMatilda · 30/06/2020 21:29

2 weeks. Then up to 1 month for another 2 weeks.

geekaMaxima · 30/06/2020 21:31

DS1 3-4 weeks.
DS2 1 day!

yikesanotherbooboo · 30/06/2020 21:32

Like you it felt hard to justify newborn size . My 3 varied from 6 lb 12 to 8 lb 3 and didn't have newborn size. Yes, the small size might have fitted better for the first couple of weeks ( their legs get stuck up in the body section) but it was not enough of a problem to justify the cost. I always feel really quite angry with these threads when you realise how much money we are guilt tripped into spending and how much stuff one is pressurised into thinking is essential. You really hardly need anything for a new baby.

ChelseaCat · 30/06/2020 21:32

Mine wasn’t in 0-3 until he hit three months old! He was 6lbs 13oz at birth

firstimemamma · 30/06/2020 21:37

Literally 2 weeks (baby was just under 9 pounds at birth).

On the other hand my niece was born at a very average 7 pounds and yet still needed 'tiny baby' to begin with. Her parents hadn't bought anything in this size and i don't think they'd wish panic buying once baby is here on anyone! I'd recommend having just a few bits in the smaller size just for peace of mind. We did and even though the clothes were never worn we don't regret it (it was worth it knowing they were there just in case and we might need them for a future child).

BuffaloCauliflower · 30/06/2020 21:37

@grey12 no I’m buying for my own baby, due in November.

OP posts:
BuffaloCauliflower · 30/06/2020 21:38

@grey12 I would buy bigger for someone else. I don’t think lots of people will buy us clothes tbh, I’m not into baby showers or things like that
