Casually browsing stupidly expensive houses on Rightmove when I found this...

So I was casually looking at houses I can't afford on Rightmove earlier and this came up.

Am I the only one who thinks the wording of this ad is bizarre (although rather funny!)

Also love the idea of the estate agents reports 😂 I've been tempted to ring up about the "gentleman's residence" for some more information (obviously I'm not nosy at all lol)

Your fantasy house shopping is at the other end of the spectrum to mine... www.frenchestateagents.com/french-property-for-sale/view/99249ENO53/house-for-sale-in-jublains-mayenne-pays-de-la-loire-france
.. And there are interior pics!!

I can’t do proper links but this one has no interior pictures except number 3. Why?

ItsMischerWavy · 17/06/2020 15:47

@Megatron this is why I was wo dweing if some where old.

I sort of understand people mot wanting to show off their possessions but how they can possibly expect to sell without people seeing a house I don't know!

My house was a gentleman’s residence. Or also known as a genetlemans seat. It was a thing hundreds of years ago , basically very wealthy men used to have properties say in London and then another property elsewhere. Their country home.

Reddit as usual is talking nonsense. It was basically the home of a very wealthy man. The term is quite commonly used.

The substantial funds thing is a bit odd but I guess to put off time wasters trying to buy it for a fiver.

That interior one is so weird. Is it a spa, nursing home, or has the owner got a kink for velvet type seats?
BarbaraofSeville · 17/06/2020 15:50

Oh, I thought 'a gentleman's residence' was just a polite way of saying that 'current occupant is a lazy bloke who 'can't see mess' so it hasn't been cleaned in years and the utility room is overrun with takeaway containers that he hasn't got round to putting in the bin'.

A bit like the (far less grand, I hasten to add) house my parents sold in the mid 1970s to a young single man who did nothing to it until well into this century when the council put a 'sort out this dangerously derelict property or else' order on it for the leaking guttering, falling chimney etc on it. And by nothing, I mean nothing, not even washing the net curtains (relatives still lived locally so we got regular updates on the state of our old house).

ItsMischerWavy · 17/06/2020 15:52

@Wunderweb you win the prize for finding the most bizarre picture! I'd hazard a guess that it could be the cinema. Chairs not to my taste though

@ncailleach I like that..... That could be lovely

A quick and dirty Google Maps nosey doesn't look hopeful.

There's an added structure to the front of the building (porch?), the land is overgrown, there are multiple vehicles including what looks like a rust coloured boat and there is no separate drive to the building.

It's on a farm and it looks like you'd have to drive past the farmhouse, some outbuildings and a field with some caravans to get to the house.

Access, renovation, possibly fighting covenants and Grade II Listed status means you're probably looking at no change from another £1m.

Bluntness100 · 17/06/2020 15:53

No, a gentleman’s residence was a thing, hundreds of years ago. It’s a proper term. It’s basically the country estate Of someone very wealthy.

This house was previously listed in 2009 for five million but seems not to have been sold. Taken off the market and kept. I wonder who owns it, whomever it is, doesn’t want pics of inside shown. It looks in good repair outside so assume it’s a privacy thing.

Gingernaut · 17/06/2020 15:55

Those velour velvet seats are in the cinema!

RedRocketGirl · 17/06/2020 15:55

I went as far as to click on the Street View in the map link and it went to a photo of an interior kitchen - all very odd!

girlcrushonvillanelle · 17/06/2020 15:56

Falmouth, South Cornwall
www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-67696701.html

Ricky Wilson from the Kaiser Chief's house is for sale. Nice spot.

Gingernaut · 17/06/2020 15:58

The farm is a holiday lettings place, look at the map and the Gentleman's House is further along on a spur road, past the caravans

EmperorCovidula · 17/06/2020 15:59

I bet it’s cursed by some misogynistic ghost.

Cinders29 · 17/06/2020 15:59

How bizarre that you get a photo of an interior when you click on street view.

ScrambledSmegs · 17/06/2020 16:01

I don't think that's it, Gingernaut. It looks more like this house

Pipandmum · 17/06/2020 16:02

'Gentlemen's residence' means it is substantial with some period features but not as formal as a country residence. Old fashioned terminology maybe but not uncommon.

ScrambledSmegs · 17/06/2020 16:02

Which has a different access road, slightly further along.

SockYarn · 17/06/2020 16:03

I think you are taking it a bit literally. On old censuses, people without an occupation but who lived off inheritance or similar were described as a "gentleman" or less commonly "gentlewoman". It's not a comment on their character and more than would be describing someone as a plumber or nurse.

That would be an amazing project - live in the main house and convert the outbuildings into holiday lets. Worrying there's no interior photos.

Bluntness100 · 17/06/2020 16:04

The street view brings up the farm not the propert for sale, which is “HALWYN MYLOR”.

The farm is a one and a half acre camp site to the side of it.

Bluntness100 · 17/06/2020 16:06

That’s just what some random wrote on reddit...🤣

Bluntness100 · 17/06/2020 16:07

Yup, street view is wrong, the farm is only 1.5 acres and not for sale. This propert sits in twelve acres. They are two different entities.

KaronAVyrus · 17/06/2020 16:07

Given that there are no photos a “gentleman’s residence” must be estate agent speak for shit hole.

WhatWouldDominicDo · 17/06/2020 16:08

I'm interested! It looks lovely, and I can be a gentleman for a few days - you're allowed to change sex as it pleases you these days you know.

What do you think they mean by "substantial funds"? Confused
