Casually browsing stupidly expensive houses on Rightmove when I found this...

ItsMischerWavy · 17/06/2020 13:44

So I was casually looking at houses I can't afford on Rightmove earlier and this came up.

Am I the only one who thinks the wording of this ad is bizarre (although rather funny!)

No photos can also mean someone famous lives there and doesn’t wish their privacy invaded.

catspyjamas123 · 17/06/2020 16:09

Seriously, how is “gentleman’s residence” still an acceptable term in property details these days, any more than “slave plantation”?

Bluntness100 · 17/06/2020 16:09

What do you think they mean by "substantial funds

Well it was previously listed at 5 million ten years ago, so well above that...

MissMarks · 17/06/2020 16:10

My house was also called a ‘gentleman’s residence’ on the schedule. It is a Victorian property with a gate house type thing. I just assumed it was wording for an old big house

Xenia · 17/06/2020 16:11

Yes, Pip is right eg it could be for a single man rather than a married man with 10 children and a wife who would need a m uch bigger house. It is a bit like you might have a house that a dowager duchess or something would live in as a single woman - a dower house thing for when your husband dies and your son turfs you out of the main house - one of the aunts in Downton Abbey lived in one of those - similar sort of thing to a gentleman's residence - quite big by modern standards but okay for one person only (in my view what my house is in a sense - I won't be swamped in it when the children leave but it is a nice 5 bed detached with garden (rather than 15 bed rooms with 100 acres)

Pussycatinboots · 17/06/2020 16:12

would require too much windowlene

It looks like the retirement home for Grace Brothers Grin

Bluntness100 · 17/06/2020 16:13

As said, my house also was classed a gentleman’s residence/seat. But in the historical documents not on the estate agent blurb though. They called it an estate, which I’d dispute,,🤣

Bluntness100 · 17/06/2020 16:16

On the brochure though, this is interesting

“ FIXTURES AND FITTINGS
Only those mentioned in this brochure are included in the sale. All others, such as carpets, curtains, light fittings, garden ornaments etc. are specifically excluded, but may be made available by separate negotiation”

None of the fix and fittings are mentioned in the brochure which means it’s all being removed or has to be bought separately...even the light fittings,,

WhatWouldDominicDo · 17/06/2020 16:17

Ah well, that's me out then Sad

SoupDragon · 17/06/2020 16:21

Or there are none, hence the lack of photos. I notice that the listed building entry also did not see the inside - maybe there isn't an inside 😂

Bluntness100 · 17/06/2020 16:27

I’m fascinated by it. It’s clearly very very well maintained, and all the fix and fittings excluded, so likely they are very expensive, no one excludes crap, it’s also very private and secluded. The property had renovation work done to the chimneys and rendering in 1985.

I wonder who lives there. Someone who wishes to remain private and not have images of inside their home available.

It’s never been sold I don’t think, Only once on the market the blurb says, and it was on the market in 2009 , but I can’t see it saying it was sold then, although it could have been, or someone has inherited it and it has been in the same family for years.

Whatever though it’s not a shit hole. That’s a propert someone has taken a lot of time and money maintaining and wishes the public not to see inside.

Crockodoodle · 17/06/2020 16:27

A 600k house near me went for 10k more than advertised, apparently there were two competing families that like the fact there were no photos on Zoopla as it was last sold in the 50`s and the sellers refused pictures, not just of inside but the outside as well.

Bluntness100 · 17/06/2020 16:29

Or there are none

Well no. Because you’d not specifically list all those things as excluded And potentially available for sale separately if there were none.

DaveTheDesigner · 17/06/2020 16:35

What a twattish advert. Someone should wind them up for a laugh.

littlejalapeno · 17/06/2020 16:36

The actual property, a bit further down the road from the map pin, looks perilously close to the water. I wonder what the flood risk is and if the reason there aren’t any pics could be water damage?

Standrewsschool · 17/06/2020 16:37

The house has only sold once before. I’m concluding that a lonely old gentleman lived there, who had no children to take on the house. I agree, it’s probably run down inside, but potentially beautiful. The only thing is, that it’s in Falmouth. Nothing against Falmouth, it’s lovely, but it takes forever and a day to drive down there. Although, I suppose if you’re a gentleman, you may have a helicopter (too flashy?).

Not sure I’ve ever seen a 30 million house before. Usually that would have a POA tag on it.

Bizarrely like the third house. Couldn’t live there full time, but nice to stay there when you are going ‘up to town’.

Quarantimespringclean · 17/06/2020 16:42

Another interpretation of the term ‘gentleman’s residence’ - I thought it meant a country house without much land attached. So suitable for someone with a private income who didn’t need the land attached to his property to produce income for him. A bit like a Manor House but without the land, tenant farmers and rental cottages attached to a Manor House.

Alsohuman · 17/06/2020 16:43

@ItsMischerWavy

My thoughts exactly! It's the fact that it being "a gentleman's residence" is mentioned so many time too!

The substantial funds bit didn't pass me by either!

Such strange wording!!

I found this too, picture 13 is particularly interesting - why anyone would want that is beyond me!!! I'd far rather my other half wasn't watching me shave my legs from the bed!

Oh come on. If you’d got that sort of money, you’d pay a minion to deal with your legs!
Devlesko · 17/06/2020 16:45

Maybe you can't get a mortgage on it, hence why you need considerable funds.
Maybe the gentleman didn't look after his house and it's a shell inside.

peppapigisscottish · 17/06/2020 16:45

My eldest DD lives in a gentleman's residence...it's a very outdated term.

Wouldyougivemeamortgage · 17/06/2020 16:47

I used to work with a prize prick who used this term in his descriptions regularly (estate agent). Total knob head who thought he was some sort of Victorian gentleman in his tweed jackets and flat cap at the grand age of 35.

viques · 17/06/2020 16:57

I don't think giving it a quick coat of weather shield and washing the windows makes up for no photos! And fools no one btw.

I believe a gentlemans residence needs a gun room, billiard room, panelled library and a decent wine cellar at the very least. I think this house is putting on airs claiming to be a gentlemans residence. No house, I call you out, you are an upstarts house and should be ashamed of yourself .

I do like the thought of it having been in the same family for so long though, I wonder what the story is....... It's been on the market for a while

That 10 bed has listed as a key feature...

"garden"

As, in this case, the "garden" is 30 acres of parkland, that is a hell of an understatement Grin

Bowerbird5 · 17/06/2020 17:04

Hasn't bothered with the upkeep of his stables!

Gorgeous views though.Wonder how much it is?

No because it is the agent's standard wording and is on all their "particulars"
