This'll be thread number 13, I think.

Let's hope it's a lucky one Grin

Orangeblossom what a hugely depressing article. There is another hypothesis which the author appears not to have considered, which is that we are capable of looking at statistics and can tell who covid-19 impacts severely and who it doesn't and that we can look at other countries who have relaxed lockdown and see what has happened there.

Alternatively we can sit in naval gazing until 2023 FFS Hmm.

Orangeblossom78 · 17/06/2020 16:38

Why do they think other countries are so much better than the UK?

Spain fudging their figures, the abusive extreme lockdown for children in Italy, the anger for France for Macron burning all their masks, all those fade in looking at USA with Trump and Brazil, India and Russia are just horrific in comparison

Do they live in some mad bubble or something? (Guardian writers) don't they think other countries are far more interested in their own plight?

(sorry have not read the Guardian in detail before didn;t realise quite how dementory and self obsessed it is)

Orangeblossom78 · 17/06/2020 16:39

We should be sitting in shame Grin

peaceanddove · 17/06/2020 16:40

The number of people affected with CV-19 is diminishing so rapidly that there are now genuine concerns that we won't have a large enough cohort to actually test the vaccine on.

PatriciaHolm · 17/06/2020 16:41

@pollyhemlock

To be fair she has a seriously disabled brother. She has written very movingly about him. This may have affected her view of the situation.
Yes - he lives permanently in a care home, which must give her a different perspective.

Yep! I heard the Oxford trial had to be doe in Brazil. I may be wrong but I'm sure I heard that somewhere.

BarkandCheese · 17/06/2020 16:45

Why do they think other countries are so much better than the UK?

It’s back to that reverse exceptionalism again isn’t it?

Allflightscancelled · 17/06/2020 16:47

The comments below one of the BBC stories earlier were unbelievable. Moaning on about how the UK must be really bad because France and Spain were only letting us go if we quarantine for a fortnight on arrival.
Nothing to do with the fact that it's a tit for tat – they're only doing it because we're quarantining them Hmm

Orangeblossom78 · 17/06/2020 16:49

Yes they are testing the vaccine on HCPs in Brazil

Orangeblossom78 · 17/06/2020 16:50

It's so self absorbed, there have been problems in many countries, some a lot worse than here.

AnxiousElephant77 · 17/06/2020 16:50

I've just been reading the comments on Professor Sikora's tweet with the daily figures.

And now I'm off to slam my head into a wall.

Mascotte · 17/06/2020 16:51

Hi @Bobbythebulldog you sound perfectly murderous fir this thread!

Nihiloxica · 17/06/2020 16:53

What a pile of pretentious wank! Why would she be asked specifically about this? Is she imagining a future scenario where she’s some kind of guru sage with young people seated around her feet waiting to hear her words of wisdom?

It's surprisingly common, this kind of "right side of history" self-regarding bollocks.

Orangeblossom78 · 17/06/2020 16:53

I didn't see the writer worrying about her more at risk brother - it was about people in general.

Anyway maybe better move on from the Guardian.

ILoveTotoro · 17/06/2020 16:55

@AnxiousElephant77

OMG don't read the comments on Professor Sikora's tweets! I made that mistake too. Its like dementors stalk him obsessively as they can't stand any kind of positivity

Orangeblossom78 · 17/06/2020 16:56

There's a post on here going an about keeping things 'low key' is the answer and the people struggling are those who want too much

Hmm, again on another planet from the vast majority who are struggling just due to well, financial problems, children at home and trying to work etc

but no it is due to too high life expectations. Of course.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 17/06/2020 16:57

Thanks everyone. Just hope I get the job now. it's interview via zoom, and I do not look good on camera, especially with the lock down hair. Grin

Shuckle · 17/06/2020 17:03

Hello everyone. Been lurking and thoroughly enjoying seeing some normality so thought I'd better say hi. I'm 33 weeks pregnant and absolutely desperate to go and look at insanely cute baby clothes and get myself some more t shirts to fit over my giant excess cake bump, but as there's not an open toilet in sight down the high street and no cafes will let me use them, buggered :( will have to pretend I'm going shopping via you lot instead. I have however made two trips through a McDonald's drive thru AND I've been inside Asda in the last week so there's my murderous contribution for the week!

NannyPhlegm · 17/06/2020 17:03

Since when did wanting my children to get an education become high life expectations!

AnxiousElephant77 · 17/06/2020 17:06

@trapped everything crossed for you!!

RubberDinghyRapids · 17/06/2020 17:08

Hello @Bobbythebulldog and @Shuckle, pull up a chair and get comfy.

Jourdain11 · 17/06/2020 17:09

I think both the Spanish and Italian figures are very unrepresentative of the reality and scientists and officials in those countries have admitted that this is the case, but it is hard to estimate correctly at this stage (due to lack of testing and deaths in the community early on).

It was interesting that the BBC etc when reporting from those countries always were in the centre of Madrid or so... "look how empty it is, look how much better they respect the rules." But I'm sure central London was equally deserted! And I'm also sure that if they had gone to some random village in the south of Spain, they would have found many people not following the regulations, just as here!

France, there is a lot of public anger about Macron and "le Macronisme" and the French figures are also widely held to be flawed.

Incidentally, did anyone see this back in the spring?

BarkandCheese · 17/06/2020 17:12

Hey up, Daily Sadly Death Show have said getting live entertainment back is now being discussed.

RubberDinghyRapids · 17/06/2020 17:13

Any update from our Scots contingency? I'm sure I heard something positive from the Nipster on the radio but it was headlines so not the full story. Is she changing her tune re: schools etc?

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 17/06/2020 17:14

Just done McDonald’s with the kids. We were the only car there so I don’t think we managed much of a murder spree.

I can’t believe all it takes to make my kids happy are hot, salty potato derivatives. They were so happy I’ve ignored the dropped ones on the back seat.

They’ve gone back out with their murderous vector friends again.
