What do you call this plate of food...?

When you have a selection of various foodstuffs? For example:
Crackers, cheese, ham, boiled egg, hummus, crudités, pork pie or sausage roll, grapes.

Basically, a little bit of everything. I've seen it called a 'picky plate' or 'snack plate' on FB etc. I've also seen it mentioned on MN how they detest the saying.

So, I'm just curious what you call this type of meal?

Picky bits but add a samosa, and some party rings it's party food

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 15/06/2020 17:57

A very small snack

Bitsa - I've never come across anyone who calls it that so this thread has made me realise that my DF didn't actually make it up...

SilverOtter · 15/06/2020 18:03

Ohffs66 · 15/06/2020 18:04

Iwalkinmyclothing · 15/06/2020 18:19

A swedish plate, but that's a family joke.

BayandBlonde · 15/06/2020 18:53

'Picky bits'

That makes my teeth itch just saying it 😖

istheresomethingwrongwithme · 15/06/2020 18:58

Iffits tea - as in, if it's in the fridge, you can have it for tea.

@CuriousaboutSamphire

As much as the term makes you, and others, cringe the fact that you, and others, feel so free to denigrate what is so normal for many makes me angry.

MN snobbery at it's worst!

Or, @CuriousaboutSamphire it's nothing whatsoever to do with snobbery and everything to do with being a common thing that turns people's stomachs. Same as some people feel about nails on a blackboard or sponges or holes. It's the image it conjures. For many of us "bits" and "picky bits" suggest genitals or scabs, it's almost a synaesthesia type reaction. Some people feel the same way about words like moist or hubs or even the simple word "meal". Snobbery has nothing to do with it and your anger is misplaced.

I feel the same about the words grab and pop used as verbs BTW. It isn't snobbery, it's a peculiarity.

"I'm just going to pop to the shop and grab some jacket pots and a few picky bits to go with the spag bol". Worst. Sentence. Ever.

Can-apes and cruddites! Grin I think I'll call it cruddites from now on.

Notso · 15/06/2020 19:33

We don't have that kind of meal and must be a literal family as we call meals after their elements.
We have cheese and crackers with grapes chutney, olives, which funnily enough we call cheese and crackers with grapes, chutney and olives.
We have salad, ham/chicken and crusty bread which, you guessed it, we call salad, ham/chicken and crusty bread!

I don't like picky bits, I know many are fond of the term but it makes me think of a hoard of people mauling a buffet, the very reason I hate buffets.

GinWithRosie · 15/06/2020 19:41

@SonEtLumiere I was just coming on to say Abendbrot but you beat me to it 🥰

Lozz22 · 15/06/2020 19:42

Picky tea

iklboo · 15/06/2020 19:50

Can-apes and cruddites! I think I'll call it cruddites from now on.

We call them crudities ( sweary chopped up veg) Grin

Canapés are canopies after a MIL mispronunciation.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 15/06/2020 19:52

Treat plate. Dates from when I used to have to really sell meals to fussy young DS. Even a plate of raw veg is a 'treat plate' and is still greeted with delight Grin

midwestsummer · 15/06/2020 19:59

Cold collation

Or perhaps buffet.

VerbenaGirl · 15/06/2020 20:01

“Bits”

RonniePickering · 15/06/2020 20:03

"Picky bits" ugh, why does it make me cringe so much? 😂

I say it in my head the way Harry Hill used to say "Chippy Chips"

Thornhill58 · 15/06/2020 20:05

I call it a plate with bits. Very creative 😁

Paddingtonthebear · 15/06/2020 20:07

Buffet

WheresMyAlex · 15/06/2020 20:12

We call it picky bits. Sorry!

ttigerlilly · 15/06/2020 20:12

A platter

Tiktokgone · 15/06/2020 20:13
