Well, the wonderful publication that is Somerset Live is now, slightly grudgingly, reporting there are only 4 new cases in Somerset today and didn't reference the R no. once in its article. Probably because the stats don't now back it up?

Orangeblossom78 · 08/06/2020 18:20

DS (11) back to school for the first day today. He was keen to go but after he is quiet and subdued. Said they were told to so the 2m thing but by the end of the day they hadn't, he seems worried about this

Feel cross that this has bothered him now and he's obviously worried about it. He is coming out with stuff about a 3 percent mortality rate as well so had to chat to him about that and explain much older people have a higher rate so that skews things.

Said they didn't do much work either much less than usual, most of the time just out to play but not much to play with. Oh and on top a fire drill to test if they could do that socially distanced on the first day Hmm

HesterShaw1 · 08/06/2020 18:41

MaudesMum Oh Somerset Live sounds almost as quality as our our local rag! Only CL are today promising us terrible things about our R number. This has set their baying FB mob going. Police on the Tamar. CLOSE THE BORDER. Bring in the army etc.

HesterShaw1 · 08/06/2020 18:44

Orangeblossom78 A socially distanced fire drill? I have actually heard it all now. So you hear the fire alarm and the people in charge say "There is no drill today, therefore this is the real thing". Do you

a) Worry about the GERMS getting you if you escape too close to another person and dither uncertainly...
or
b) Take your chances with the virus and escape from the very hot, very dangerous fire.

That's a tough one alright....

HesterShaw1 · 08/06/2020 18:45

Sorry that was in no way a reflection of your son of course. It was my incredulity at what is happening in this country at the moment.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 08/06/2020 18:53

Just watched the briefing tonight. Maybe I'm imagining it or reading too much into it , but is it me or does Matt Wanksock give the impression that he feels he is fighting a losing battle with his social distancing measures?
He just seems to get more red faced and huffy whenever anyone asks about the 2m rule and other measures.
I'm starting to get the impression that he is a bit like a captain on a sinking ship right now.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 08/06/2020 18:55

Health Secretary Matt Hancock told the House of Commons that the R number - the rate at which the virus reproduces - remained below one in every region of the country but said that while the figure was the lowest since lockdown, 55 deaths was "55 too many".

FUCK. So it has to be zero deaths then? How long will that take? What the hell happened to flattening the curve??

Ghostlyglow · 08/06/2020 18:56

I thought he seemed a bit weird tonight at the briefing, a bit distracted. I don't want to go all conspiracy theory but sometimes I think they've got earpieces in and someone is telling them what to say at these things.

rosettesforjill · 08/06/2020 18:59

Disclaimer: I didn't watch it... but I'd hope he was distracted because he knew some measures are going to be relaxed soon but he wasn't allowed to say yet

I suspect he is the lone voice wanting them to stay. Knowing he is on a hiding to nothing (did you hear him dig his heels in about his 2m without any actual justification), he just seemed that odd mix of defeated and petulant. Like someone being pulled out of a nightclub by the bouncers.
Ghostlyglow · 08/06/2020 19:05

Well that would be good @rosettesforjill.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 08/06/2020 19:05

@SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito
We appear to have moved from flattening the curve to defeating the virus.
But no one told us.
From controlling the spread to controlling the people.

@Drivingdownthe101

I’m a staunch remainer non dementor. Never thought they would be words used to describe myself!
Me too.

I’m pretty sure that’s the case for the 2m thing. He knows he’s going to be relaxed to 1m soon so didn’t want to say too much about 2m being extremely important. I know this is one of those ‘I know someone who’ things but I was chatting to one of the school mums today when picking DD up and she works in head office for a big chain of bars, and they’ve been told to plan for reopening on 22nd June with 1m social distancing in place.
BakewellTarts · 08/06/2020 19:09

I think its going to be relaxed soon too.

Also noticed that there are plans for normal secondary schooling in September in England anyway. I think this is somewhat reassuring.

Cattermole · 08/06/2020 19:10

TBH I think the "55 too many" is more of a bone thrown to the dementors.
If he says "woo HOOOO only 55 deaths today hurrah that's brilliant news, it's on the way down!!" he'll get ripped a new one. I suspect he adds the words "too many" in his sleep now.
Would you like another chocolate, Matt?
Yes please, that's one too many....

Yes I agree.

Yeah maybe.

Like nobody say "died" now, it has to be "sadly died".

LivinLaVidaLoki · 08/06/2020 19:15

@Drivingdownthe101
I think that's why he always hurriedly adds that its "constantly under review"

BarkandCheese · 08/06/2020 19:16

Well Chris Ridell has just pissed me off. He was being interviewed on my local news, when asked about the issue of children being out of school and not getting a decent education his reply was “schools have too many tests, be creative, read a book or do some art with your child”. It’s been eleven fucking weeks, we’ve read books, we’ve done art, we’ve been creative, the level of testing in schools has nothing to do with parents currently home educating. I know he doesn’t have a clue what it’s like for parents right now and I’m probably being unfair, but we don’t need a well off middle aged bloke with no young children telling us the bleeding obvious. Grrr.

“schools have too many tests, be creative, read a book or do some art with your child”

Every time I hear something like this I realise how many, so called, liberals are completely out of touch with the reality of most people's lives.

Drivingdownthe101 · 08/06/2020 19:20

Yeah, because we haven’t once thought about reading a book or letting our children loose with some paints over the last 11 fucking weeks.

Drivingdownthe101 · 08/06/2020 19:21

And if schools have too many tests, then it’s up to the government to tell them to do fewer tests. We don’t write the bloody curriculum!
