I've found myself feeling increasingly at odds with prevailing sentiment among my peers. I'm left-leaning, pro-Remain yet I'm questioning the complete hysteria around lockdown, it feels like political polarisation and that people are just anti-anything the Tories suggest

Me too. Feeling really displaced at the moment and totally insulted that people assume I'm a Brexit fan and Tory because I have views that seem out of step with everyone else. Am avoiding lots of people.

ilovecardigans · 17/05/2020 15:08

Nihil you are most welcome. Wink

It's my daft sense of humour and a lot of swearing & Netflix that keeps me going.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 17/05/2020 15:09

That lockdown thread is another awful one. Someone asked why we are the only country complaining about mental health issues and I commented you're hardly likely to hear about China and was accused of saying the Chinese aren't important!

merryhouse · 17/05/2020 15:11

oooh @PickAChew you must be quite near me!

Are you in the sought-after village with the old racecourse or the johnny-come-lately with the church on the bad corner?

ilovecardigans · 17/05/2020 15:15

I bet Sajid Javid is thinking 'whew, dodged a bullet there...'

Just been looking online to see whether there's any word yet on Scottish angling and was staggered to learn that angling nets the Scottish economy £135 million a year and accounts for 4,300 jobs! I had no idea.

merryhouse · 17/05/2020 15:16

our neighbours have all been lovely, by the way. We have a WhatsApp group that's continually getting offers to pick things up at the shop and one sewing enthusiast who's handing out masks; and we had a VE day party and singalong which was sort of socially-distanced but various people had obviously made their own decisions.

I think they're still doing the Thursday thing (our double-glazing works quite well), but we never have and the only WhatsApp comment was an early one about maybe keeping it down because the one-year-old opposite us goes to bed then.

TheGreatWave · 17/05/2020 15:27

"Are you in the sought-after village with the old racecourse or the johnny-come-lately with the church on the bad corner?*

Think I have worked out the first, the second one has me a bit more stumped.

We're in the car heading for the beach, yipee. Lots of different colored cars on the road including red ones. Smile

Orangeblossom78 · 17/05/2020 15:28

Yes i alos replied to the post about why are we the only ones moaning about mental health, linking to how badly the Italian's MH impact has been. Was told oh, we didn't have a proper lockdown as able to go out (totally missing the impact of social isolation)

I bet these are people mainly with families not totally alone...

Disneyland in Shanghai is open......

I just want a day out....

We are stuffed in Wales, Drakeford is going on the unions advice as to when schools go back.

If it's really late next year then they'll have to something for the Y10 like DD1 or actually start looking at what's been provided on-line by the schools and maybe setting min standards.

We're increasingly getting a really token effort from the secondary and reading the latest from Head I'm not the only parent concerned about that though there trying the Boris style waffle rather than address concerns at the minute.

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 17/05/2020 15:28

@justasking111 I have to read summaries of the Welsh stuff as I can't bear bloody Mark Drakeford and Kirsty William's smugness as they tell us how much they care. They only care about sticking it to England and buddying up to the teacher's unions. If they cared they'd be publishing impact assessments about mitigated the damage they are doing by socially isolating developing minds and older people, but instead it's draw a poster, bake a cake...

In our local woods there is a single rope swing left that some miserable bastard had swung over a high branch. We worked together and got it down again (after some lovely teenagers had tried and failed). The parks are shut, the children aren't allowed within 2m of anyone, the schools are shut, do they really want to suck that final drop of joy from our walk. Yes, yes they do.

I'm a left leaning retainer too, but I also believe in personal responsibility, sensible risk assessment and a rights based approach. Who am I meant to vote for now? I don't feel anyone represents me.

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 17/05/2020 15:29

Retainer? remainer!

MaudesMum · 17/05/2020 15:32

Just like a normal Sunday afternoon here. My neighbours on one side have been to a garden centre, and come back with lots of plants, whilst my neighbours on the other have - for the first time since - taken their kids and their bikes off somewhere in the car. So, its lovely and peaceful and feels great!

MaxNormal · 17/05/2020 15:38

I've noticed when people discuss lockdowns, "new normal" etc and use the words sadly or unfortunately, they come across as anything fucking but sad and clearly don't find it unfortunate at all. I picture them saying it with an expression of faux-concern on their faces and a patronising little head-tilt.
"We'll have to stay indoors for at least the next five years, sadly".

highmarkingsnowmobile · 17/05/2020 15:43

The lockdown thread is hilarious. I'm deluded, apparently.

Orangeblossom78 · 17/05/2020 15:43

I'm sure that when the Welsh and Scottish people get fed up at the restrictions and see the rest of us going out they will get pressure to change surely, even NS has said 'we can't go on like this' and changes are expected next week.

highmarkingsnowmobile · 17/05/2020 15:44

Yes, Max. We're all going to wind up in Gilead by Autumn, that is, the 10,000 of us who are still alive.

Orangeblossom78 · 17/05/2020 15:45

The dementors can be quite rude in their comments - name calling and the like, as someone mentioned it is a bit like calling people 'stupid' over Brexit rather than listening..

Orangeblossom78 · 17/05/2020 15:47

They also ignore any discussion about e.g. maybe certain areas might more than others, or about an initial lockdown then a 'dance' of other ongoing less strict measures.

Not interested it seems Confused just Lockdown

GoldenOmber · 17/05/2020 15:48

I think NS's 'we can't go on like this' message was getting people to prepare for things being loosened up without freaking out that it's all because Boris pressured us into it. We can hope anyway.

BarkandCheese · 17/05/2020 15:48

Has anyone seen the thread about staying out of “our” aonb? It’s mostly the usual back and forth guff, although 60% think the OP is being U which isn’t bad. However around page 7 someone has posted about some city folk turning up to dump a body, and is getting shirty with anyone pointing out this hasn’t got anything to do with the actual thread. I feel both dementors and anti dementors can all agree that dumping bodies isn’t acceptable even during non pandemic times.

Orangeblossom78 · 17/05/2020 15:49

Yes NS would not like to be following Boris would she Grin

Orangeblossom78 · 17/05/2020 15:50

Ooh I'd love to have an area of natural beauty all to myself...

Orangeblossom78 · 17/05/2020 15:51

to keep bodies in our course Hmm why this obsession with bodies. It is a bit macabre isn't it..

GoldenOmber · 17/05/2020 15:51

they come across as anything fucking but sad and clearly don't find it unfortunate at all

Good test for this one I've found is to see how they react when someone points out they're factually wrong about something:

"It's very unlikely there'll ever be a vaccine, unfortunately, because scientists have never been able to make a coronavirus vaccine."
"Oh that's actually not true, we do have coronavirus vaccines! here is some more information."

You'd expect people who actually ARE sad about it to go "oh, good!", but in my experience the reaction you get is "well that's not true/doesn't count/I'm moving the goalposts to something else now", which would indicate a definite lack of sadness in my opinion.
