@psychomath the point where the unions started spraying primary kids with disinfectant was the point I started praying they got destroyed in some kind of Thatcher versus the Miners-esque destruction.

Are the teaching unions that fucking stupid that they don't realise that once they lose public support they will be nothing?! They're playing right into it.

highmarkingsnowmobile · 17/05/2020 17:42

I would love to go and sit with a friend and get out my own head for a bit but I can't

People think Lord Voldemort cast some kind of caterwauling charm that goes off every time someone in Wales or Scotland breaks 'the rules' but in reality, I'm in rural Scotland, people have been visiting their families and friends and no one gives a toss! I got told on the lockdown thread I'll be instantly fined. By whom? The other inhabitants of this estate, my stoner neighbour couldn't care less? The sheep next the property? The Lord of Sea and Sky (there's open water just in front and forest to the back)?

I'm so glad I don't live around a load of curtain-twitching Stasi.

psychomath · 17/05/2020 17:45

Domina I'm just glad they at least seem to realise that strike action would be a terrible idea. I was very worried about that for a while.

I'm a bit concerned that it'll lead to divisions between teachers and support staff as well, as we (collectively, not so much myself personally for various reasons) are far more likely to lose our jobs once the economy goes to hell and funding is cut. Although if my facebook feed is anything to go by, few TAs have made that connection yet Hmm

Orangeblossom78 · 17/05/2020 17:45

It has made a difference you're right psychomath I too notice more people smiling as well.

maria860 · 17/05/2020 17:46

@ilovecardigans that's made me smile nobody likes the Midlands accent Grin we say mommy here I have no idea why as it's American but it's ingrained.
I think things are calming down social media wise although I do see a lot of they deserve to die if someone had a get together or they don't deserve medical treatment honestly some people thrive on it they enjoy the misery of it all.
My mom lives in a really nice village so I'm actually leaving the house tomorrow for the first time properly in months and we're going for a country walk together at a distance. I haven't seen one person in my family now since March 10th except for her when she's knocked on to bring some goodies over but still

that's a long time to go.
I'm glad this thread is going it's a bit of relief in these times and I love reading the posts.
Someone said dementors wet dream on here the other day I couldn't stop laughing so funny.

psychomath · 17/05/2020 17:48

Orangeblossom78 I always make sure to smile at people when I see them out, especially elderly people, in part to signal that I'm not a dementor Grin I display my takeaway coffees and other frivolities prominently as well. I wonder if everyone else is doing the same!

LilacTree1 · 17/05/2020 17:49

Hi all
Wow this moves fast

I have no chance of catching up but think I’ll stick to this thread. I’ve mostly not been on MN. I think it was Friday, I saw the most appalling dementoring thread and began to wonder what the real world is like....

I’ve been feeling so low, I’ve not talked to many friends but had a few chats on the phone - no one close enough to meet - and I noticed that while there’s some dementoring, it’s accompanied by “I met my boyfriend this weekend.”

I think there’s a lot of cognitive dissonance going on. I also hope the real world isn’t like MN - plenty of people in the park, clearly mixing households.

It’s also hard to know if people fear the virus or the law. One of mum’s friend has severe mobility issues and her daughter has said they can only meet if it’s in the park. The daughter’s plan is to put her mum on a park bench and walk up a down while they chat a 2m distance. I asked mum how the older lady is meant to get to the park. Daughter says taxi. Then there’s the issue of how the lady will walk to a bench - she can barely walk with two sticks. She’ll need the taxi drivers assistance to get in and out of the cab.

When I hear stories like this, i think, it’s fear of the law and the fine. She can’t possibly think this exposes her mum to less viral load than if they meet in her garden? The lady hasn’t made a decision yet but i think she’s quite upset the her daughter won’t just come to her garden. But then I can also imagine how the daughter will feel if she gets £100 fine.

I saw a police van stuffed with the buggers - they’re allowed to travel in cars in a group. They seem to be just circling the park.

DominaShantotto · 17/05/2020 17:54

For me until I hit the point of not giving a shit - it was fear of people being angry and judgemental toward me.

TeacupDrama · 17/05/2020 17:56

we're going to need a title for new thread again soon, this thread is good

we don't want recklessness just sanity, Adults taking responsibility for own health decisions.

We let people smoke when it's bad for them, we allow alcohol to be consumed, people go abseiling, mountain climbing some even let their kids go on outward bound type holidays from school, chose unsuitable partners, drive motorbikes, none of these activities are risk free in fact most of them are a great deal riskier than covid

highmarkingsnowmobile · 17/05/2020 18:00

Hell, we let people choose whether or not to vaccinate their kids against bloody measles, which has a terrifying R rate.

maria860 · 17/05/2020 18:00

@justasking111 my sister lives in China not Wuhan btw but December she went to stay with her friend for a few weeks in Oz before it all kicked off and couldn't go back to China she had to come back to England.
My sister is stuck here now she has an apartment there and all her stuff is there she's a teacher but she's in limbo living at my brothers and no wages and can't claim benefits or anything over here. Bit of a nightmare her friend was in China when it happened and had to leave her pets there they don't care about animals there.

ilovecardigans · 17/05/2020 18:12

This made me laugh.

highmarkingsnowmobile · 17/05/2020 18:13

New thread yet?

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 17/05/2020 18:17

New thread title - haters gonna hate, dementors gonna dement?

I saw a group of about a dozen people sat having a picnic while out this afternoon. Not a park but a big green space. No-one else there to spread germs to, it's the perfect place to do it to be honest. Kind of an old out of town industrial / retail park but most of it now empty. I smiled very broadly at them from the car, but was probably too far away to be seen.

I really hope we get the go ahead for social 'bubbles' in the next week or so. It will make such a difference.

TheGreatWave · 17/05/2020 18:20

we say mommy here I have no idea why as it's American but it's ingrained.

I'm a Mommy in a land of Mammy's.

ThatLibraryMiss · 17/05/2020 18:20

they come across as anything fucking but sad and clearly don't find it unfortunate at all

"I saw loads of people on the beach today, all being sensible and social distancing."

"Well, I hope the wind was blowing the 'rona out to sea and away from them!"

... you don't, though, do you? You hope they all get really ill then they'll be sorry they weren't as priggish uptight sensible as you.

BillywilliamV · 17/05/2020 18:21

Two cyclists, a man and a woman passed us today in surgical masks. We were on a country path, before the we had seen nobody for 15 minutes! The sheer ignorance of some people is breath taking, what were they expecting to happen?

Miseryl · 17/05/2020 18:25

I feel at home here.

Mustbetimeforachange · 17/05/2020 18:27

Apparently some gardens don't have good enough airflow to sit 2 metres apart. FGS. We've had a lovely time in our garden this weekend with a couple of friends dropping in.

TheGreatWave · 17/05/2020 18:29

Beach was good. Very windy. Families, children building sandcastles, dog walkers, a family even sat on a bench and ate chocolate twix or a wispa I think it may have been

Mascotte · 17/05/2020 18:30

@Mustbetimeforachange I've just seen that. Poor op.

‘See also: Well, I hope...‘

Well spotted, that is exactly it.

TheGreatWave · 17/05/2020 18:33

In seriousness though, that short trip to the beach has done wonders for me. I feel really good for it.

So leader of the council, it doesn't matter that you say we are not welcome, the sea welcomes us.

justasking111 · 17/05/2020 18:37

Re: teachers it will be hard going back working alongside dementors, I think I would avoid the staff room at break times. Ditto for any business really.
