Mine is Sandie Shaw. I can't believe it had never occurred to me until tonight that her name is a play on Sandy Shore.

Dandelions (that you blow and make wishes on) are exactly the same dandelions as the yellow flowery weeds. I thought they were different types but they just gong get Rey as they get old!

returnofthemollymawks · 09/05/2020 23:28

I didn't know that either

Raella50 · 09/05/2020 23:28

Go grey as they get old *

returnofthemollymawks · 09/05/2020 23:28

About Sandie shaw

NC4Now · 09/05/2020 23:29

There’s no such fish as a kipper

I only just realised that Cannon and Ball, Little and Large etc, were not their real names. I had always assumed it was a coincidence that they had managed to team up with someone whose name went with theirs.

I'm 41 so I grew up watching dozens of crap comedian acts but I never realised that until DH and I were reminiscing about how crap comedy used to be and he pissed himself when he realised that what I thought.

I didn't realise until today that one of my favourite poems - Adlestrop by Edward Thomas - is pronounced Addle-strop. I have loved this poem for most of my life and must never have heard it read out loud.

numih · 10/05/2020 00:08

My ds told me the other day that dandelion yellow flowers turn into those blow away things. They are both dandelions. My mind was blown!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 10/05/2020 00:32

Not something I found out recently but, I used to think James Bond was a real person. BlushGrin

MrsRudderless · 10/05/2020 00:33

But they're called dandelion clocks?

Butterymuffin · 10/05/2020 00:37

The Only Way is Up by Yazz isn't by Yazz, it's a cover. The original was an early 80s disco release by Otis Clay. Have a listen, it's great! Only found out when they played it on 6 Music.

Quarantimespringclean · 10/05/2020 00:39

I was a little girl when Sandie Shaw was current and I remember being awed by the cleverness of the pun ‘Never imitate Sandie Shaw unless you’re on a sandy shore’.

We made our own fun back then.

sowrj · 10/05/2020 00:41

How can so many people not know about dandelions 🤯

MrsEricBana · 10/05/2020 00:42

It had never occurred to me about Cannon & Ball either 😂😂

IDefinitelyHaveFriends · 10/05/2020 00:42

Did you think they were like artichokes and Jerusalem artichokes, two unrelated plants that happened to have the same name?

I’ve been on MN too long, because I’m now getting out my bingo card and waiting to tick off Hawaii, pineapples, the Channel Tunnel, and possibly the location of the female urethra.

Sunshinesky1981 · 10/05/2020 00:49

It was only recently that I realised that Richard and David Attenborough were Brothers Blush

NightCzar · 10/05/2020 00:49

I don't think I know the one about Hawaii but always love the Channel Tunnel.

serenada · 10/05/2020 00:56

@NC4Now

There’s no such fish as a kipper

Now, you are going to have to explain that

notapizzaeater · 10/05/2020 01:00

A kipper is a smoked fish - bit like bacon isn't a pig, yes it's from a pig but it's not a pig

Zomblie · 10/05/2020 01:01

Probably not a widely known one, but I only realised last year after TEN YEARS OF DRIVING THERE that I didn't need to turn off the dual carriageway and go over that roundabout, sometimes queuing for a good half an hour, when visiting the in laws... apparently I've spent ten years leaving the dual carriageway and queuing for a roundabout just to rejoin the same dual carriageway a few yards further down the road... 🤯🤯

When DH was questioned as to why he'd never informed me of this he just shrugged and said "I thought you just wanted a break from the dual carriageway... although I did think it a bit odd"

DustyMaiden · 10/05/2020 01:03

A smoked herring is a kipper

YappityYapYap · 10/05/2020 01:03

I thought the sistine chapel was called the sixteenth chapel

Littleshortcake · 10/05/2020 01:04

I didn't know that about dandelions !! I'm in my 40s.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/05/2020 01:06

I’ve been on MN too long, because I’m now getting out my bingo card and waiting to tick off Hawaii, pineapples, the Channel Tunnel, and possibly the location of the female urethra.

Now I want to know what the heck it is about those things that people don't know (hopefully not including myself).ConfusedGrin

NC4Now · 10/05/2020 01:08

I only found that out about smoked herrings a few years ago. I thought there were kippers swimming around in the Irish Sea, off the coast of the Isle of Man.
