Mine is Sandie Shaw. I can't believe it had never occurred to me until tonight that her name is a play on Sandy Shore.

Well I now i want to know what the thing is that people don't know about Hawaii, pineapples and the Channel Tunnel.

TildaTurnip · 10/05/2020 01:08

I thought the dandelion clock and the dandelion flower were two different parts of the plant too. I thought that until about a minute ago Grin

Samtsirch · 10/05/2020 01:09

That Bob Dylan wrote Adele’s hit “make you feel my love “ and that he also wrote jimi Hendrix’s hit “ all along the watchtower “.

ChanklyBore · 10/05/2020 01:10

Pineapples grow on bushes, not trees.
The channel tunnel isn’t sitting on the sea bed but is under the rock.
The urethra isn’t inside the vagina.

I think those are usually mentioned, along with Portsmouth being on an island.

ChanklyBore · 10/05/2020 01:11

And usually someone comes up with the petrol pump symbol arrow, and that the numbers on the toaster are minutes (neither of those is true in all cases, so not really true at all)

PrincessFiorimonde · 10/05/2020 01:12

Doesn't Portsmouth usually come up on these threads?

ChanklyBore · 10/05/2020 01:13

I recently had to inform my children that watermelons don’t grow on trees either. I’m not sure why they thought they did!

DrFoxtrot · 10/05/2020 01:13

I used to think that 5 Star's song 'System Addict' was 'Systematic'.

I am amazed at people not knowing that the yellow flowers and seeds/ clock are the same dandelion plant Shock.

There was also a thread previously where people didn't know that blackcurrants and blackberries were different fruit Confused.

PrincessFiorimonde · 10/05/2020 01:16

Ah, ChanklyBore beat me to it!

Are kippers actually nice? Sorry veering off topic but I’d just like to round off the kipper convo.

Cocoa beans (cacao pods) grow on the trunk of a tree

Oh. Disappointing... though I'm a bit baffled why anyone wouldn't think a tunnel was going through rock.
So wtf is it that people don't know about Hawai'i? (Other than that evidently it should have an apostrophe in it ... autocorrect did that.Grin)

Whatevernext1 · 10/05/2020 01:23

I'm very embarrassed to admit that when I was younger I thought handbags were called 'hambags' I suddenly twigged one day when I saw a sign in a shop,it took a minute to register and my mind was blown!
I have know idea why I thought they were called this 🤣🙈

Tillygetsit · 10/05/2020 01:24

redbigbananafeet · 10/05/2020 01:26

MrsRudderless They were/are called dandelion clocks because did/do see how many blows it takes to blow off all the seeds and that was mean to tell you the time

DoreensEatingHerSoreen · 10/05/2020 01:35

Whatevernext11 as a child I thought a bedroom was called a begeroom 🤔

IDefinitelyHaveFriends · 10/05/2020 01:37

The things that people (not anyone in particular, certainly not me, can’t imagine why you’d think that) didn’t know about Hawaii (my phone doesn’t do the apostrophe thing and I CBA) are that a) it isn’t in the Caribbean and b) neither is it just off the coast of California even though that’s how it looks on the USA page of my atlas.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 10/05/2020 01:45

Showing my MN age.

  • Winnie the Pooh, you have Eeyore the Donkey (Eee Aawww the sound the donkey makes) and Kanga and Roo (Kanga Roo)
  • Pineapples do not grow on trees. You can't shake them. They grow in the ground.
BabyHazey · 10/05/2020 01:50

DH informed me recently that the Michelin stars that restaurants get are from the company that makes the tyres - I never really thought about it tbh but I guess I just assumed it was two companies with the same name.

JaneJeffer · 10/05/2020 01:51

I never noticed the toaster has a defrost button until DS1 came home for lockdown and told me when I was toasting frozen bread!

SkiingIsHeaven · 10/05/2020 01:57

My son told me that cows have a best friend. I thought that it was rubbish but my friend is a dairy farmer so I asked her.

Apparently the stalls that they sleep at night have space for two cows. The farmer doesn't tell the cows where to sleep but every night the cows buddy up with the same friend. So it is like they have a best friend.

I don't know why but it made me quite happy to think that they did.

Aquamarine1029 · 10/05/2020 01:59

I've always been good a geography, knowledge of other countries, etc, but about 2 years ago I found out that Madagascar has a population of over 26 MILLION people. I had absolutely no idea. Obviously, I knew people lived there, but no clue it was that many. My mind was blown.

I have to admit that although I'm pretty well educated (degree level), I had no idea that Hawaii was so far from the USA - I just looked on Google maps, and it's nearly halfway to Australia! I would expect an American to know roughly where it is, though.
