Mine is Sandie Shaw. I can't believe it had never occurred to me until tonight that her name is a play on Sandy Shore.

It wasn't recent, but I was older than I care to admit when I realised that the things in star wars are called "lightsabers" not "light savers."

badtime · 10/05/2020 07:54

The things that have amused me most on threads like this are the people who thought unicorns were real and the fact that they have been balanced point by the people who thought seahorses and wolves weren't real.

Also, some of you might be surprised to learn that it's hang gliding, not hand gliding.

badtime · 10/05/2020 07:54

*balanced out

*DH informed me recently that the Michelin stars that restaurants get are from the company that makes the tyres - I never really thought about it tbh but I guess I just assumed it was two companies with the same name.

This was because the tyre company made a travel guide for car owners.*

Yep. They wanted to give people a reason to drive around more and wear out their tyres so they needed to buy more. Given the French origins of the company they figured amazing food would be the best encouragement!

Sorry. Bold fail!

scampy isn't a type of fish either, it can be one of several types.

Scampy isn't fish at all? It's some sort of lobstery/prawny stuff, isn't it?

@Heismyopendoor take a look at the map on here

www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-news/twitter-discovered-edinburgh-lies-west-1007890

Edinburgh is marginally further west

user1495884620 · 10/05/2020 07:56

Someone on another thread yesterday said vertigo, as in the dizziness with ear problems is pronounced differently to the fear of heights. Is that right? I have always pronounced both the same with emphasis on the first syllable.

synthony · 10/05/2020 07:57

I just realised it you cut your thumb you can put a tea bag on it.

TheShoesa · 10/05/2020 07:57

I learnt on MN a few years back that if you tie laces in a double bow, you can undo it like a normal bow (I always undid the second knot, then undid as normal)

The petrol pump one has never let me down yet - that the picture on the dashboard tells you which side the petrol cap is. But it is the arrow you need to check, not which side the pump hose is on the picture.

Heismyopendoor · 10/05/2020 07:58

@ChangeThePasswordi still see Cardiff being further west than Edinburgh 😂

ChangeThePassword · 10/05/2020 07:59

There's a line drawn south from Edinburgh that lands west of Cardiff, so I'm not sure how you can!

butterpuffed · 10/05/2020 08:00

Until last week when I found out on a tv programme , I didn't know currants, raisins and sultanas are grapes to start with . I always thought they probably grow on bushes.

Heismyopendoor · 10/05/2020 08:00

The point for Cardiff is further to the west that the point for Edinburgh?

synthony · 10/05/2020 08:01

Are we upside down?

BeyondMyWits · 10/05/2020 08:01

@Heismyopendoor - yes - we are on a globe, which skews things just a little.

Cardiff co-ordinates 51.4799995, -3.1800001 so 3.180 degrees West (of Greenwich/Prime meridian).

Edinburgh 55.9520607 -3.19648 so 3.196 degrees West

So Edinburgh is slightly West of Cardiff

ChangeThePassword · 10/05/2020 08:02

This is from Google. It has Edinburgh coordinates at the top, and Cardiff below.

Fear of heights is acrophobia.

Quarantimespringclean · 10/05/2020 08:04

Proper scampi is a type of lobster. Cheap scampi as sold in chain restaurants might be any type or mix of fish deep fried in breadcrumbs.

Scampy is a name Enid Blyton might have given to a small boisterous puppy.

Heismyopendoor · 10/05/2020 08:06

That’s too confusing for me 😂 they should put this stuff on google maps!

Standrewsschool · 10/05/2020 08:07

Didn’t realise Hawaii was so far from mainland USA either.

Another geographical one, Norwich is further north than Birmingham.

ChangeThePassword · 10/05/2020 08:08

Until yesterday I thought the song Lido Shuffle was by Elton John. It sounds so much like an Elton John song!

user1495884620 · 10/05/2020 08:10

Fear of heights is acrophobia.

It's commonly referred to as vertigo, though. I've always assumed because heights can make you feel dizzy like the ear problem. But maybe not if they are pronounced differently.

lockeddownandcrazy · 10/05/2020 08:11

@butterpuffed said "Until last week when I found out on a tv programme , I didn't know currants, raisins and sultanas are grapes to start with . I always thought they probably grow on bushes."

Gotta love 'Inside the Factory' :-)

Tortoises - not the way I imagined the skeleton at all!
