I know a friend was posting on FB the other day about how the Tories had a deliberate plan to KILL THE ELDERLY here

I had one of those! Did point out that even the Tories aren't daft enough to deliberately target their main voter base for mass slaughter but no luck Grin

I reckon we'll remain mostly as we are for the next three weeks, then after the government flails around some more it'll have ramped up testing and contact tracing enough to start loosening restrictions without The Second Spike. There will be minor outbreaks of Covid and bigger outbreaks of "how can they reopen national parks, the murderers" and "I am never letting my child out of the house EVER AGAIN!" but over time most countries that can afford to do so will have controlled Covid enough that outbreaks will be the exception not the rule. Then by the end of the year we'll have some emergency use vaccine that will get used for targeted vaccination around outbreak areas like they did with Ebola. Then vaccines for everyone. Then by the time a couple of years have passed, the only mentions of Covid on here will be the occasional "AIBU to miss lockdown?" threads and a few people still refusing to leave their houses.

I've realised with horror that I may be raising (she's 23!) a proto-dementor. She's been looking at Twitter too much. I've put her right with a few facts. We do have to protect DH who is very vulnerable, but it doesn't alter the fact that someone coming within 6 feet of you in passing is very very unlikely to give you The Virus.

Wherearemyminions · 10/05/2020 12:00

I have found my people, thank god for your sanity! Just heading off to Lidl to get glared at for having a bare face and not wearing a tatty pair of well worn latex gloves, also expect to be tutted at as I dare to exchange pleasantries with people... looking forward to a catch up on the thread with a coffee when I get back!

heroku · 10/05/2020 12:02

The problem is definitely social media. My family members have gone from "oh well we all have to die some day" in mid-March to straight out of Azkaban dementoring this weekend. All the references are to those memes (e.g. the burning building one, the extra bed in ICU for you one).

Any tips on how to undementor a dementor? I'm trying to share positive news stories and stats about how low the death rate is among the under 70s but it doesn't seem to be going in. What kind of dark magic do I need to summon to reclaim their sanity?

MinesaPinot · 10/05/2020 12:03

We’ve just popped a birthday card into friends during our walk and stood having a chat for 5 mins socially distanced. And we weren’t wearing gloves or masks. Am I damned do you think?

Willitneverend · 10/05/2020 12:05

@Mascotte I'm quite worried about businesses in Scotland. On one hand, the Treasury holds the purse for furloughing, and has indicated it's (obviously) not going to go on forever. On the other hand loads of people in Scotland, including the FM, are dementing away at businesses that are open and can run as drive throughs, to the point that businesses are being demonised for opening. Although conversely I've also seen SNP types tweeting that businesses should open if they can operate safely (so which is it, then?).

I don't want this to drag on any longer here, and even if the Scottish Government could somehow fund the furloughing to go on longer than the UK then that's a hell of a lot of debt.

RunningNinja79 · 10/05/2020 12:05

Another thing really pissing me off. People who are wanting Lockdown to stay for longer (probably a lot longer) continuously spouting that going back to normal will kill everyone and create a too big a spike.

OK yes that may be true, but wanting some forms of restrictions to be eased is NOT the same as wanting life to go back to the way it was.

They seem to think that everyone who is having a hard time of lockdown for whatever reason just wants things to normal tomorrow.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 10/05/2020 12:06

@Mustbetimeforachange

Make sure to smile at people!- you murder more people that way- we all know that happiness makes the virus stronger and more virulent

TinRoofRusty · 10/05/2020 12:07

Stay Alert pisses me off unless I can sign up for night shift because a) I hate mornings b) I'm nowhere near alert until I have 2 large filter coffees and a few tokes on my vape.

Alexis is right, it's not possible to ventilate some people, more than you'd think. My dad is in his mid-80s. He has unstable hypertension despite medication, has had prostate cancer twice (it can come back in the area even with the prostate removed) and has heart failure. He can't have a vent (or even a general anaesthetic, which is, well, a vent) so he has a DNR. Another friend has one as she has emphysema - too much lung damage to vent her.

Jourdain, best of luck! Smile

Drivingdownthe101 · 10/05/2020 12:08

Yes RunningNinja79. Anyone who mentions that we need to start changing anything is accused of wanting to lift all restrictions, spend our weekend at a festival and send all our kids back to school full time on Monday morning.

Theluggage15 · 10/05/2020 12:11

It’s amazes me that so many people seem to think we can get along without the economy, as if it’s just some fun hobby rather than the thing that provides us with food, education, healthcare, a roof over our head etc. There’s only so much debt the country can get into before we end up like Venezuela.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 10/05/2020 12:11

Arguing with a dementor is pointless. They get paranoid and protective and extra defensive of their anxiety even more when you point out they are wrong. They're coming from an emotional place, not a rational place, so meeting them with facts is useless because they dont care about facts. They are getting an emotional payoff from their hysteria and wont give that up easily.

The best way ive found is to agree with them. Eg "yes- I think you should stay in for the next 2 years. Very wise. I'll be going out next week but you should definitely stay in until 2022 just in case. I'll see you in two years time then- bye!" At that point you can see them visibly deflate a bit.

Then, wait and see what happens! I can guarantee you they wont go through with it because deep down they know its utterly ridiculous but they are enjoying the drama too much to let it go right now.

I'm not sure you can, engaging just seems to make it worse...just as someone mentioned snooze for 30 days (and maybe they might have changed) and try and not let it affect you too much perhaps..

If the Scottish want to stay at home they can, do they think the English will come dragging them out their homes Grin

LivinLaVidaLoki · 10/05/2020 12:14

I've seen this loads this loads this morning and just want to scream NO THEY FUCKING DIDNT. That's how many are REPORTED. Also if you are just looking at reported deaths it was 300 something yesterday...and again...reported deaths over the last 7 day average is 497, average of 71 a day. Its falling at about a rate of 100 average a week, so fuck off you fucking plank.

Yes i'm not very 'alert* at the best of times and I'm stressing about being demented into wearing a 'face covering'- just went and saw an old pair of silky shorts and vaguely wondered about making them into some kind of scarf.. will it be kind of unacceptable to go into shops without one do you think?

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 10/05/2020 12:17

Saw a nursing sister on fb this morning apparently VE day meant the usual drunk related admissions in her hospital so expect an outbreak of covid in a couple of weeks she ranted

Some people are going to be gutted if there aren't!

SpratsOnParade · 10/05/2020 12:18

If the Scottish want to stay at home they can, do they think the English will come dragging them out their homes

Many of us Scots are desperate to get out and about. We're not a homogeneous mass. I'm going to be even more pissed off than I already am if we're still stuck in our homes for most of the day while the English and Welsh have some freedom. (I don't know what's going on in Northern Ireland)

Orangeblossom78 · 10/05/2020 12:19

The other thing is you can do this think to suspend FB for a while, can't remember how as I have deleted it now but there is a way of kind of putting it on pause...it tried to tell you people will miss you etc but you just go past that bit

Orangeblossom78 · 10/05/2020 12:19

sorry for typos you know what i mean.

IrmaFayLear · 10/05/2020 12:20

As a shielded person, I've seen some posts almost demanding that everyone should stay in until a vaccine is found or alternatively crying about the shielding being extended.

Frankly this whole thing is being seized upon by some agitators to stir up discontent, panic and unrest. Teaching unions are plotting to prevent schools opening for the foreseeable future, and public sector unions the same. They can't believe they've been handed this chance to wreck the economy and hurl millions on the mercy of the state. Young people will be even more disaffected as they'll have no jobs, no opportunities, no higher education etc.

Orangeblossom78 · 10/05/2020 12:21

Sorry sprats, I have a slightly dementoring family there so meaning them really not all scots. hopefully you can get out more too Flowers

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 10/05/2020 12:21

I just looked up the stats and every year in the UK, approx 600,000 people die. 600,000 people die a year PRE COVID. Thats an average of 1,643 deaths a day in normal times.

In 2018, 616,000 people died. That works out at 1687 people dying a day. So why are getting hysterical about 600 deaths in one day when the normal death rate is far higher than that? i dont get it

SomewhereEast · 10/05/2020 12:22

I wonder how many people moaning about Boris and his Costa cup simultaneously think the fuss over Neil Ferguson (who did actually break The Roolz) was 'prurient' and 'politically driven'? And I'm a Labour voter saying that.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 10/05/2020 12:22

Oh wait, I guess it means 600 people extra right? but of those people, they might have died anyway since over a thousand people die a day anyway

TitianaTitsling · 10/05/2020 12:26

My patroneus is a Shetland pony- short of leg, rotund of stomach, but can have a nasty bite! I'm also so thankful for snooze option on FB- having to find all the sturgeon dementor zealouts who are peeing themselves in glee at the 'see we're different!! We are better, we don't want our people to DDDDDIIIIIEEE'!
