I wonder, is it better to be a lert or a loof

Lert conjures up images of siting up straight hair all neat and polite chat, loof on the other hand is slobbing on the sofa, not dressed and up to your armpits in chocolate......I know which I am. Grin

Kids went to school during the time of smallpox.

Hell, most of the educational reforms that gave a guaranteed education to all happened during a small pox out break that killed half a million people. (the 1870 education act and 1876 factory act coincided with the Franco-prussian war that caused a massive small pox outbreak in Europe.)

DominaShantotto · 10/05/2020 11:17

They're now dementoring it up about the incredibly rare Kawasaki complication in full "close the schools forever" mode.

Zoidbergonthehalfshell · 10/05/2020 11:19

This made me laugh this morning...

Twitter has decided they'd rather stay home than stay alert. They're gonna need to crowbar people out of their houses at the end of this shitfest.

BarkandCheese · 10/05/2020 11:26

Absolutely no one has to send their children back to school if they don’t want to.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 10/05/2020 11:26

Apparently those of us who have been on furlough for 7 weeks should stop moaning about being bored and "find something productive to do" fuck knows what though.

heylittlehenwhenwhenwhen · 10/05/2020 11:26

Nice thread! A refreshing injection of sanity and common sense.

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 10/05/2020 11:27

Thinking of you today Jourdain.

I have had a really dreadful night off the back of reading a horrible comment on here. I won't repeat it but the words 'fucking scum' were involved. Clearly I need to work harder at sticking to safe threads. I've learnt my lesson. People can't see beyond the end of their own noses sometimes in terms of understanding how badly others some are struggling. Anyway I have a phonecall arranged with a lovely psychologist tomorrow so am focusing on getting to that. I can't wait to go and sit in the same room with him sometime soon - I have to wait to see what Boris says tonight before he makes a decision about having face to face sessions again. Fingers crossed.

I keep thinking about the fact many of my friends are dementors. They are lovely, clever people but some of them also either have chronic physical or mental health problems and after a decade of being frightened for their futures thanks to austerity, they are just plain scared of this being handled badly now. They're driving me nuts, god love them, but I do get it. I just need to step away because they think easing lockdown is a selfish, murderous act. They really can't see beyond a second peak and 'we're all going to die.' I am so grateful to the various experts who are being rational and talking about how proportionally few people this virus actually kills, both overall and in the various age groups. And thank goodness for all of you too.

Incidentally, the fact about Germany and how they are recording their deaths has been debunked, I think (sorry). They are recording COVID deaths in a similar way to here as far as I read. They have been very impressive in how they've dealt with it but I do think they've still struggled with keeping it out of care homes and who knows how they'll do over the next 2 years. I know a friend was posting on FB the other day about how the Tories had a deliberate plan to KILL THE ELDERLY here but even without various stupid mistakes that have been made, it was always going to be impossible to keep care homes virus free. Too many trips to hospitals needed among residents, lots of staff going in and out and patients not able to understand the need to keep away from others because of dementia, etc. No government could have saved them from being affected and we're seeing that elsewhere too. The situation still needs more thought to keep people safe but it wasn't some evil Tory plan. Confused

heroku · 10/05/2020 11:29

Just had a look at Twitter and it is full on bonkers. My favourite tweet so far:

"Your government want to kill you. That is all."

Willitneverend · 10/05/2020 11:30

The official SNP social media channels are very pointedly sharing the "Stay at home" slogan now. I used to be a strong SNP supporter myself but I'm horrified at the way this is panning out, it's like nothing else matters apart from coronavirus and dementoring is patriotic.

Drivingdownthe101 · 10/05/2020 11:34

To be honest they can stay there for all I care! Leaves more room in the parks/shops/schools etc for the rest of us. The only worry is that the government sees all this and decides to keep everything closed because that’s the ‘will of the public’. FFS open stuff up so those of us who want to can get back out there, and leave everyone else in their homes until that mythical time when everything becomes ‘safe’.

Stopmenow123 · 10/05/2020 11:35

@TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair

The 'fucking scum' poster made me laugh because their original post used the phrase 'I am dismayed' excessively (I am dismayed that people think X, I am dismayed that they are doing Y, I am dismayed..and on and on) and I was just about to post 'are you dismayed, I don't think it's clear?' When they posted 'actually I'm not dismayed, these people are disgusting and fucking scum'Grin

Willitneverend · 10/05/2020 11:35

@trappedsincesundaymorn Yeah, I've read we should all go and volunteer in covid wards! I could put my children in a hedge to do this, and I'm sure my 25 year old Standard Grade Biology would be put to good use.

Jourdain11 · 10/05/2020 11:41

Is there a strain of the virus that affects people's brains and capacity for rational thought?

So many people seem to have gone totally bonkers. A mum from my kids' school said to me, after I found out I had leukaemia, that "at least is wasn't coronavirus, because can you imagine how scared you'd be if you tested positive?" I was like, errr, I think I might prefer coronavirus, to be honest!

Have a good day everyone, try not to murder too many people! Smile

Mustbetimeforachange · 10/05/2020 11:42

The virus hasn't gone away if the rules get relaxed it means there is room for you in hospital and or the economy is more important than individual lives.
I call "full house"

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 10/05/2020 11:42

Oh did you see it too? Stopmenow I should have thought to laugh Blush. I'm doing so now. It was ridiculous. All this judgement of others - as if the average rather liberal British person wants to kill all grannies out of pure selfishness. I will have a cup of coffee outside my house and if 5 OAP's die, pah! Sums my position up perfectly, unthinking meanie that I am Grin

trappedsincesundaymorn · 10/05/2020 11:44

Willitneverend

The best one I heard was those of us without children at home should volunteer for redundancy and work in schools and nurseries so that the parents can go back to work when furlough ends, because they "need the money more and should be able to keep (their) jobs". My how I laughed at that.

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 10/05/2020 11:45

I'm just reading this www.spectator.co.uk/article/ten-reasons-to-end-the-lockdown-now It's full of so much sense.

Alsohuman · 10/05/2020 11:45

Professor Sikora seems to be to be very measured and a voice of reason in all this

He does. Unfortunately I’ve discovered my husband had dementor tendencies as he’s just rubbished him. It’s a real pain being married to a hypochondriac at the moment.

RunningNinja79 · 10/05/2020 11:45

Can I join you? Been looking to join in for a while, but the threads have been insanely long and I just couldn't be arsed reading it all.

Another murderer here who dares step out the front door and also would like some measures of lockdown to be eased. I'm happy to not return to normal like before, but I've had enough of the current situation. BTW, I do only go out for the reasons allowed, but I still go out. Going for a long run this afternoon.

Mainly I'm fed up with everyone being all high and mighty about being able to tell others that they need to stay home and by going out is killing people.

I was really hoping for some positive news later from Boris, but I think its going to be very disappointing. Therefore, will deflate me even more.

Apart from his speech, will there be any further online guidance to look at do we know? I originally thought it was meant to be a proper "roadmap" telling us how we are going to come out of lockdown and which measures were going to be eased and when.

Then I find out there's no dates, which at first got to me then I decided I understood why a bit more. He's only on for 10 mins, which is fair enough as he can't go on through every scenario, but will there be more detail online? Or do we have to wait and see? I'm worried that nothing meaningful will happen.

I need some positivity in my life and extending lockdown without any meaningful information is not positivity.

Mascotte · 10/05/2020 11:46

@Jourdain11 no! I can't believe someone thought that was a good thing to say!

For the record, out of the the two is definitely take the virus

Mascotte · 10/05/2020 11:48

The snp crowd are also sharing the "Boris says go back to work to die to please billionaires" stuff. I've pointed out again I'd like to go back to work to earn some actual income to fund myself and my child.

rosettesforjill · 10/05/2020 11:51

I wonder what our death rates will look like if/when we and other countries have this second wave. If more of the population have had it here, will we suddenly look brilliant in the coming months because we have higher levels of immunity?

Also re schools. I took DD for her 12 month jabs last week and the nurse said there is a measles outbreak locally - I can only assume because people aren't taking their children to be vaccinated while lockdown is ongoing. Unchecked CV has an R rate of 3 (I think?) and measles has 15. And I know which one I would rather my children caught.
