Also I have an aunt in her 70s. She was admitted to hospital a while back with pneumonia and covid. We were told to expect the worst. It was wrenching.
She was discharged from hospital the other day.
I posted this on here as I was so happy and I was called a liar. As anyone old who gets it is doomed and I'm just lying to further my own point.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 10/05/2020 12:27

awwww sweet!

HauntedGoatFart · 10/05/2020 12:28

A mum from my kids' school said to me, after I found out I had leukaemia, that "at least is wasn't coronavirus, because can you imagine how scared you'd be if you tested positive?"

Shock fucking hell Jourdain. That is just... Wow. That is the ultimate expression of how completely fucked in the head some people have got.

I wonder what our death rates will look like if/when we and other countries have this second wave. If more of the population have had it here, will we suddenly look brilliant in the coming months because we have higher levels of immunity?

It's a real possibility that we will be at an advantage in future because of higher levels of acquired immunity in the population. That doesn't make our approach the right one obvs - it may be that the virus will evolve to be less harmful or we'll have better treatment, but it is one reason why it will take years to really compare the different approaches countries have taken.

SpratsOnParade · 10/05/2020 12:28

Thank you. Thanks for you too Sorry I'm being a little oversensitive. I'm just so angry with bloody Nicola and the thought that we might still be trapped in this hell while other parts of the UK are hopefully starting to get back to some semblance of normality.

TheGreatWave · 10/05/2020 12:28

Too many people are very sheltered and inward looking. They find it very hard to imagine that people are having a really difficult time. They are worried about food, their only family is shielding so can't help , they can't get the food to meet their dietary needs, they are desperately lonely. I worry about them, but it seems they are unimportant.

Orangeblossom78 · 10/05/2020 12:30

Alexis yes about the daily figures (death) we had a mild winter as well and low flu number this year (these usually cause winter spikes) so it seems some of the older people who would have died then have died with this instead...the median death age is 80- half the people are over 80 so very old...it does make you think

OutwardBound2016 · 10/05/2020 12:31

When I saw the picture of Boris I immediately went on the Costa website to see if my local one was open, it isn’t, sadly. I’m sure the mere thought of a latte killed a few thousand people.

MsTSwift · 10/05/2020 12:32

I saw a chap in Lidl in full desert storm army gear - boots fatigues gas mask the lot.

DrearyWallAntler · 10/05/2020 12:33

They are also reporting deaths that happened a month or so ago due to the lag for some settings.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 10/05/2020 12:33

@Orangeblossom78

Yes, i had no idea so many people died daily in non-covid times. We arent used to hearing the daily death rate so of course it sounds high to us

Orangeblossom78 · 10/05/2020 12:33

It's Ok Sprats yes fingers crossed! they are going on about the Alert message on the radio and scottish man coming on about it...sorry but does anyone else find it quite funny, "Alert, Alert" just saw my elderly neighbour with a stick poking that at others not keeping their distance. She's got the idea Grin

Orangeblossom78 · 10/05/2020 12:35

Alexis you might find this interesting www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2012/nov/06/deaths-mortality-rates-cause-death-2011

Re. that Facebook post from an A&E sister.

I am an ITU nurse, believe me over the years I've realised that being a HCP does not also stop you being a drama queen. Some people I have worked with over the years just LOVE the drama, even pre-covid.

Obviously given my profession I have a lot of HCP/ITU friends, they are the worst! Multiple photos of them in their PPE/showing facemask marks. I am aware facemarks etc mark your face, they always have, I choose not to post about it and lap up the attention. I have muted many HCP Facebook friends for a while!

Orangeblossom78 · 10/05/2020 12:35

Just for an example

Orangeblossom78 · 10/05/2020 12:37

Nurses / HCP can be a total mix, I find this angel narrative a bit much at times. Have been in hospital for operations over the years and not all are pleasant kind angels...

RunningNinja79 · 10/05/2020 12:39

One of my close friends works in a care home. At least once or twice a week there is a message in a group chat about how many people have died that day and/or a picture of her in her PPE gear (mask, visor etc)

Vintagevixen · 10/05/2020 12:40

Absolutely Orangeblossom. It is really grating to me.

Like any other profession, there are those that are great nurses, those that are crap, those that are somewhere in the middle. There are those that come on shift purely for the money, those that love their job etc.

There are also legions of the dramatic!

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 10/05/2020 12:40

@orangeblossom78

Thanks! Its a shame we cant put our resources into research for cancer and heart disease with the same gusto and vigour that we are now doing for covid. It would save millions of lives, considering they are far bigger killers than covid

LivinLaVidaLoki · 10/05/2020 12:41

Also why can't the dementors grasp excess mortality. We wont know what this is for a while as the data has to be measured over a longer period.
For example, if someone had a terminal illness and contracted covid then died, they would be included in the covid stats. However there is a chance they may have died in the next 6 months anyway, so that death, whilst obviously tragic, statistically speaking is not an "excess" death.
So you take the death rate over say the 12 month period from when they decide to include covid and compare to previous 12 month periods.
However all they bang on about is "but last April only 2 people died and this April it's a hundredty million"....
Bangs head on wall....

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 10/05/2020 12:42

However there is a chance they may have died in the next 6 months anyway, so that death, whilst obviously tragic, statistically speaking is not an "excess" death

Yes, exactly. Which is why you cant look at the stats at face value for just this reason

Tappering · 10/05/2020 12:42

Lovely to see lots of new people joining - and I love the variety of patronus (not sure what the plural is - patroni?).

The best way I've found is to agree with them. Eg "yes- I think you should stay in for the next 2 years. Very wise. I'll be going out next week but you should definitely stay in until 2022 just in case. I'll see you in two years time then- bye!" At that point you can see them visibly deflate a bit.

This made me smile as I think it's very true. I try and remember that most people are frightened - either of the virus itself, or of speaking out and being shouted down.

@Orangeblossom78 don't tell anyone, but sometimes I want to scream "it's your job!" 😳

Vintagevixen · 10/05/2020 12:44

Mascotte my feelings exactly and I am one of them!

I'm so happy to hear that your Aunt made it through. I wish her a speedy continued recovery.

An elderly relative in Washington tested positive for the virus. (He's had multiple tests because he's in a nursing home.) He is 82, obese, has a lung condition, diabetes and has had heart surgery in the past. He was very weak for some time but that was his only symptom. He feels fine now, but no. The Dementors don't want to hear stories like that.

Mascotte · 10/05/2020 12:47

@Willitneverend I agree. And we just won't have the money to fund it. The SNP and their followers can also be very dogmatic and unquestioning. And I'm concerned about over zealous government control by them just as much as by Boris et al whom I also dislike immensely.

The SNP ones I've seen have all been about staying home etc, but all by comfortably off publicly employed people to whom there is no threat.
