I've just replied to one who claimed that we know only 33% of people admitted to hospital come out alive.

I'm fairly certain they've not got that quite right.

heroku · 08/05/2020 09:46

I totally agree that most of it is driven by a desire to be seen as the most pious and not genuine concern. I've worked with a charity supporting very poor at-risk children and I could count on one hand the number of friends who have ever donated as much as a fiver. Frankly they don't really give a shit and that's fine, it's up to them. But now suddenly they're willing to give up their jobs and freedom because "it's worth it if it saves one life"? I just don't buy it.

Mascotte · 08/05/2020 09:48

Mm.. it seems I was right to question my belief in people. And I can't question them irl as then I'll be ostracised as a killer 😃

I'm also amazed by the willingness to be told what to do and follow it slavishly.

Exactly. Its virtue signalling.

Thats what I loved so much about George Michael- it was only after he died that it came out just how much he had given away to charity and how many people he had helped. All in secret. It was truly from his heart because he did it but noone even knew about it so it wasnt for bragging rights.

Mascotte · 08/05/2020 09:49

It's also maybe because this actually might affect them whereas things like malaria or poverty, hunger, homelessness and mental illness are for Other People..

BarkandCheese · 08/05/2020 09:49

I’m sure I’ve seen it said that 33% of people who go on ventilators survive. I don’t know how correct that is but I think that’s probably where that dementor was getting 33% from.

Bollss · 08/05/2020 09:51

@BarkandCheese you're right but claiming only 33% of people admitted to hospital will survive is both wildly wrong and scaremongering and the issue is people read it and believe it!

MaudesMum · 08/05/2020 09:52

I might have just poked a group of dementors on a local Facebook page. It was all "has lockdown ended - everyone is out and about." And lots of people piling on to agree how dreadful it was. I said I'd just been out, and all I'd seen were people queuing properly to get into Sainsburys and Homebase, which wasn't surprising since it was the start of a long weekend, and people out walking, cycling and running because it was a nice morning. I will go back in a bit to see what response I've got.

Mascotte · 08/05/2020 09:53

Yes to George Michael!

Thinking about it, it's very much virtue signalling. Although I'm an anarchistic MURDERER I'm the only one on our local group who has shopped for the others or picked up prescriptions. And I'm quite old! I've stopped it now though.

BarkandCheese · 08/05/2020 09:53

TrustTheGeneGenie completely off topic but I’m rewatching Life on Mars right now and am loving your user name.

Be prepared for: "I am literally shaking and sobbing"

LOL

Bollss · 08/05/2020 09:55

Haha thanks @BarkandCheese I love life on Mars and ashes to ashes!

Just reminds me how awful judgemental people are !

Topseyt · 08/05/2020 10:00

Orangeblossom78, our public benches haven't been taped up either. I've seen other people using them too and thankfully no-one gives a shit. So far.

I don't doubt that there will be dementors in our village, and it is a fairly large village, but so far they aren't particularly brave. There is even the regular Friday morning street market, which after the initial week or so of uncertainty has been allowed to return, I am pleased to see. Fuck knows what the dementors must make of that! They probably think that the market traders are here to kill us all, even though most are selling food.

Daffodil101 · 08/05/2020 10:01

I’m struck that these dementors are just...thick as shit

winewellies · 08/05/2020 10:01

It occurred to me yesterday that if the lockdown is continued in some form for another three weeks from Sunday we'll have lost four of our eight annual Bank Holidays to it. Bummer.

Also, the original lockdown started on a Monday, to be reviewed in three weeks time. Which became a Thursday, three and a half weeks later. The second was, again, to be reviewed in three weeks, which has become Sunday, another three and a half weeks. So 3+3 = nearly 7. There must be some new maths to go with the new normal.

They've got the hospital stats mixed up it's that a third of those severely ill in hospital due not the other way round. Two thirds get better.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 08/05/2020 10:14

They really would sign up to a facist movement quite quickly wouldn't they? If there is one thing that has comforted me through this shit it is that I have had reconfirmed that I wouldn't if the time came. Nor would anyone on this thread

Yep- I know this is on a much smaller scale but when people ask how could nazi Germany ever have happened- its not so unbelievable now is it? Its kind of scary the way people will report others for things they perceive as "breaking the rules" - even when they ARE keeping to the rules. All this gossipy reporting and curtain twitching and making up rules in their head is really quite concerning. Just like Milgrim's electric shock study years ago- it seems people will do anything to obey what they perceive as "authority".

Orangeblossom78 · 08/05/2020 10:15

I'm pretty sure anyway seen that mentioned a lot in general news. Out of the most sick as well. Most people don't get that ill

Bollss · 08/05/2020 10:21

Ah thanks orange they were even more wrong than I initially thought!

Bollss · 08/05/2020 10:23

Yes! I'm almost weirdly proud that I clearly wouldn't succumb to a fascist regime! I'd also probably have been shot dead by now even though I haven't actually broken any golden rules!

Mascotte · 08/05/2020 10:23

@Daffodil101 I was thinking that too 😳

I'm going to scuttle off to set up a VPN for the resistance comms
