So pleased to see another thread :)

The80sweregreat · 02/05/2020 14:10

It is nice to see a positive thread.

BogRollBOGOF · 02/05/2020 14:19

I remain curious about the Patronus-like qualities that this thread and the previous one had.

Is it that the Dementors know they'll get short shrift on here? Does that indicate some level of self-awareness? Does that mean a lot are strategically trolling rather than merely glass-half-empty people struggling with chips on their shoulders?

I didn't get round to responding to the hushed voice bit previously. My Grandma was very much into hushed voices and ailments, especially of people you'd never heard of. Not many months after my dad died, she asked my mum in that hushed reverent tone, "Do you go to the grave very often? I go every anniversary. Halo " My aunt laughed and cackled "It hasn't been a year yet, there haven't been any anniversaries". Killed the sanctimonious tone right off Grin

everythingisginandroses · 02/05/2020 14:31

I was surprised and impressed by that too, @BogRollBOGOF. Inevitably most dementoring is happening on the Covid board, but I think this thread held up remarkably well in the bearpit of AIBU? Chat is probably a good place to avoid Dementors.

GoldenOmber · 02/05/2020 14:31

Wasn't the whole 'Blitz Spirit' thing a careful government propaganda campaign to get people managing through it anyway? Not that people who lived through the bombing weren't brave and resilient, but they were also human. This picture we have that nobody grumbled and everyone kept in good spirits and did exactly what the government said isn't quite the whole picture is it? I mean, you don't start a 'Keep Calm and Carry On' poster campaign unless people are not in fact keeping calm and carrying on.

everythingisginandroses · 02/05/2020 14:34

I heard that 'Keep Calm and Carry On' was never actually used as it was deemed to be too patronising, but that may well be incorrect.

GoldenOmber · 02/05/2020 14:35

I think you're right.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 02/05/2020 14:39

'jumped on like a bouncy castle'
GrinGrin LOL if the day.
Closely followed by 'put it all in a pastry case and glaze it'

Not too many dementors on my FB, mostly because I left our local Covid volunteers page the millisecond that I saw that a leading role had already been seized by a well known pain in the arse who thinks she's some sort of community leader.

My DM was evacuated. The first six months or so we're terrible, but it got better after that.

SureTry · 02/05/2020 14:45

I've found you all 😅 I think I've had enough of the other threads today. I've read the obese thread, the poor thread and also came across someone stating that the stay home, project the NHS stance is too white middle class at ethnic minorities won't understand or engage with the message. I feel nothing but despair.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 02/05/2020 14:56

Oh God, one of the local councillors is a dementor! According to his FB page:

"Please remember this lock down isn’t a holiday , it isn’t designed for you to catch up on all the DIY you haven’t done and clear the garden that has been overgrown for years - its designed to SAVE LIVES and its working."

DH is a handyman and obviously not working so we've ordered everything online so he can decorate the house. What else is he supposed to do, sit there staring at the walls?

everythingisginandroses · 02/05/2020 14:57

Ah, the fat thread, where posters with BMI 35+ and MH problems confess to being terrified, and other posters tell them they are right to be terrified, whilst others berate them for eating too much cake and expecting the govt to do everything for them. I can only imagine the class hatred on any thread about CV-19 and poverty on here Angry

I like to think of the odd Dementor stumbling across this and previous thread, having a read... and then going the fuck away Grin

The80sweregreat · 02/05/2020 14:57

My mum was 14 in 1939 and she was scared , especially of the 'doodlebug' bombs.
People said to just get on with it!

The black market was a big thing ! Mr weatherspoon would approve I bet.

Anyway, I think a few restrictions will lift by the end of next week. Have to see how it goes.

Willitneverend · 02/05/2020 15:02

One of the local takeaways, by the beach has so we walked down and got chips. Although not before I read a big dement-y Facebook post about how everybody who went there was going to die and/or the police would get them.

I'm actually starting to feel mentally ill myself with the curtain twitching; it doesn't help that, now the funerals over, I dont know when I will see people in my family outside my own household again, today just feels like the worst day of the whole thing so far.

Drivingdownthe101 · 02/05/2020 15:02

Please remember this lock down isn’t a holiday , it isn’t designed for you to catch up on all the DIY you haven’t done and clear the garden that has been overgrown for years - its designed to SAVE LIVES and its working

WTF?! Why does clearing your garden or doing DIY negate the ‘saving lives’ part? I’ve just started painting my kitchen, how many old ladies have I murdered in the process?!

everythingisginandroses · 02/05/2020 15:04

I laughed at another thread today where someone said they went and had a glass of wine with their friend, sitting 6ft apart on a porch and not wearing facemasks and a Dementor was utterly horrified. It sounded like the poster was in another country. We are following the guidance and we've been ill with what's almost certainly Covid-19 - god knows it's been unpleasant, but some people honestly seem to think that it's inconceivable that normal life will resume anywhere!

Chockablok · 02/05/2020 15:06

Wasn't the whole 'Blitz Spirit' thing a careful government propaganda campaign to get people managing through it anyway? Not that people who lived through the bombing weren't brave and resilient, but they were also human

Clearly I wasn't around during the blitz but I do remember some of the stories my Nana used to tell me.

She was one of the first female tram conductors in the country, and two of her sisters worked in a munitions factory. There was a lot of "empowering" moments, mostly for women, in the war.

Which is kinda categorically the opposite of what is happening right now.

When Dementors use that as a patronising way to tell you it's only a few weeks, imagine how they survived then, I think it's completely different? I used to work in defence manufacturing and there was always a buzz when we knew there was an operational need for our stuff. We all leaned on each other, worked around the clock, brought cakes in and ordered Dominos pizza on a night shift.

This is complete isolation of people. Categorically different.

Willitneverend · 02/05/2020 15:07

@PinkSparklyPussyCat I think some of the councils have had people going mental at them about waste disposal and recycling. Our council tip is shut and the council missed a garden waste uplift. There was almost as much outrage about this as there has been from the dementors, in fact I'm sure there must be an overlap between people demanding everyone stays at home and demanding they get to go to the tip...

Sparklingbrook · 02/05/2020 15:07

Hi all. Not joined in before but feel I need some positivity right now. Plus permission to go out and buy essential cider. Grin

I have just facetimed my brother, who has a three month old baby. He said the baby has been 'eating, sleeping and crying for no reason' I said that was pretty much what I was doing.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 02/05/2020 15:08

@Drivingdownthe101 it was in relation to the dump reopening - apparently we shouldn't be doing DIY and then we won't need it!

Tappering · 02/05/2020 15:09

he needed to be confined to one room which was sealed with duct tape

^^
In all fairness, haven't most people felt this way about a spouse from time to time, Covid or no?

This made me proper lol. Thank you. Have had a bit of a crappy afternoon - nothing major, just some panic attacks (have pre-existing MH issues). I am desperately trying to avoid the C19 doom as it's not helping me. This thread feels like a lifeline at the moment.

Drivingdownthe101 · 02/05/2020 15:09

DH and I were having a moan earlier about the tip being shut... mainly because they’ve cut our recycling collections due to lack of workers and it’s piling up. Hope ours reopens soon!

Tappering · 02/05/2020 15:10

The birthday driveby thread has been a dementor's paradise. I looked at it when it was about 20 posts in - and there were already two people jumping all over 'essential travel'.

Drivingdownthe101 · 02/05/2020 15:11

Willitneverend I’ve been having a minor grumble about the waste situation but I promise I don’t yell at people to ‘STAY HOME’ Grin

Sparklingbrook · 02/05/2020 15:13

Ah now I am guilty of the essential travel comments on the birthday drive by thread, but mainly because a birthday drive by sounds absolutely ridiculous and a waste of petrol TBH.

The80sweregreat · 02/05/2020 15:13

I didn't get a birthday drive by in April :(
Nobody wasting petrol on me!
